I watched the 2009 Lifetime movie Queen Sized starring Hairspray's Nikki Blonsky. This teen queen movie makes some bold choices. Get my water bottle: amzn.to/3gw3Oon (affiliate)

When the movie Hairspray came out, I was obsessed with the award winning Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad, so I was excited about her starring role in the 2009 Lifetime movie Queen Sized, about an ordinary girl who is elected homecoming queen at a southern high school. I was shocked to watch this movie and find it to be one of the most bizarre movies ever in terms of editing and direction. I'm excited to hear what you think in another Clip Breakdown! Also, as a fat girl whose father passed this June, I only have 1 pic with him. When you're fat and have a mom who constantly tells you you're ugly, you don't take pics much. So I don't think it's too much of a stretch imho.

I am sorry for your loss. My dad passed in July this year. :( And I am sorry about your mom not being supportive of you. But you know what, her behavior has NOTHING to do with you, it's her. She is just projecting her self-loathing and insecurity, as much as her pain for whatever it may be on you. I don't know if this is very comforting, but you are really just in her way when she lashes out, that is all. You are the one who just happens to be there. And knowing how horrible this is, as I have been through it, I can tell you, will get through this! You have SO MUCH in you, and you matter and you are so, so, SO WORTHY! I don't know in how far it is possible for you and how much freedom you have for hobbies and such, but for me it was incredibly helpful to delve into theater, school choire, school band, writing and sports I liked (note: never have been into sports a lot, but I found something that I liked after a while and that was really such a huge gift, not only because I met incredibly nice and supportive people there, as I am sure you would/will, but also if you find a sport you love, it can give you so much fun and enjoyment, as much as self-esteem and make you grow, completely apart from the thought of fitness or losing weight. It doesn't have to be like physically challenging or for the sake of losing weight, but just to have a good time! :) ), or maybe helping out at an animal shelter. I am not sure if any of this would be an opportunity for you, I just think if you are living with a toxic parent who doesn't support you, especially when you are grieving, it is a good thing to go out and spend as little time as possible in the toxic environment! You need people who appreciate you and can give you something, who will be there for you. Phew, long comment, I just felt so strongly about yours, and I hope you are well!

Yh, not to compare struggles (I know I'm doing it now), I used to get bullied relentlessly for something I couldn't get rid of even if I wanted to ( I'm not asking fat people or curvy people to get skinnier). Them telling me to bleach myself would sting way more in my personal opinion than someone making fun of how big or small I was. The fatshaming is awful but the thing is you get killed for being a minority so. But of course fat people experience discrimination especially in the healthcare system which can actually be between life and death. Making their medical issues about their weight and not about the underlying issues that actually had nothing to do with weight. Its even worse being both because it's just not fun at all in society.

@TheDawnofVanlife
@TheDawnofVanlife 3 года назад
@@lesbiangoddess290 As a black/fat kid I don't think it's a matter of what's worse. I mean there is discrimination for being black but you also can't go from obese to skinny overnight (if it has gotten to unhealthy obesity as their is a difference between the society weight/size expectation and actual health issue excess weight and people are really bad at making this distinction) and depending on what Hollywood is shopping as the standard, you may always be a bit fatter then what's acceptable even at a healthy size if you are a huskier individual. So I would say it's a bit more complex and nuanced. In some ways if you are black, but check most of the boxes of conventionally attractive you will be more accepted in some social situations then you would be as a heavier person. While being black comes into play in some very real larger life threatening situations and it's not something you can flip the switch on at all, your mental health can get torn down a lot in a fatphobic constantly verbally abusive environment which can lead to self harm and other lifelong issues. Honestly, the reason I considered suicide as a teen had a lot more to do with abuse from my peers about my weight then being black. And I am not dismissing the issue of being black in America, just saying there's some nuance there.

"Im sure ppl told those kids they were in the wrong" LOL or the school/facutly ignored the claims, a lot of those schools probably for that reporters time... was in the process of post desegregation. The city I went to school in, was the last school to desegregate in 1965. So I'm sure the reporter's mom/dad grew up in that time and that culture didn't just magically disappear. I’m all about rubbernecking other people’s fashion choices and seeing traditionally “plus size” fashion include crop tops, tight pants, mini dresses, bold makeup etc etc is uplifting af. @@erinaa9486 a lot of those diet foods are garbge. Like fake sugar does something to your brain where it makes eating vegetables unpalatable. Also fake sugar is about 100xs sweeter than regular sugar. And people think Because it’s not real sugar they can binge on it. Idk, honestly it’s better to have smaller amounts of real sugar than have fake sugar at all. I also suffered with this. Especially my mom because I lived with her full time. She would not push diet food on me but she’d make constant remarks about my body, on top of that I was bullied by everyone at school. So there was no escaping the remarks or bullying. I remember one time I was at my bio dads house for a visit and he had a dinner plan with one of his friends. Instead of taking me with him he left me at home at all there was to eat was stale ice cream.. because I was an embarrassment. Later I found out my dad would take my brother out. No wonder I have certain issues like restaurants. I can’t eat in public. At all. I remember in middle school I was so hungry but I’d just bring an apple with me so no one could judge me.

I live in Alabama. My sophomore year everyone was getting ready for the homecoming parade. The teacher who was sponsoring the sophomore float was standing on the back of the truck getting stuff ready. She fell- its really not clear if she had a seizure and fell or fell and then had a seizure- she had to be life flighted to the hospital. She came back a few weeks later and was seemingly fine. She wound up dying. It was insane. She was like 25/26. After that we had to change the was we did the parades so it was not technically a school thing but like a community thing. Had to be after hours and stuff. The new parade goes into a pep rally now that is called rally in the yard. Its actually pretty cool, and nice that is is not so hot.

I really appreciate the mom’s best friend. I wish she was sprinkled in more throughout the movie to really set that tone of growth for the mother. People don’t change overnight so it felt a little unrealistic about this just sudden “I’m suddenly not fatphobic anymore”. As a social worker myself- I did not like how the mom was represented but I do see this a lot in the field. Because we help others in their lives, there can be a kind of bandaid “my life is fine” concept. And I did really appreciate the friend lecturing the mom on intention versus impact even though as a social worker, the mom should have been well aware of that.

As someone who went to a Southern school, I can confirm they make a big deal out of homecoming. They did the whole homecoming king and queen thing, which were almost always a football player and a cheerleader. They had a parade where they showed them off and the "homecoming court" which was always the skinny, attractive popular girls. (Though I remember one year they gave them these awful spray tans, they were all a weird shade of bronze and I actually felt kinda bad for them.) But yeah southern schools really hype up that "school spirit." They make a big deal of all the high school football games and stuff. Probably because small Southern towns are boring as hell and there's not much else going on. I was actually kinda like Maggie in high school, in that I was the fat, awkward kid everyone loved to torment. For me, it just made want less to do with anything school related so I didn't really pay much attention to all the homecoming and school spirit stuff. So while I do remember all of it, I didn't really pay too much attention to it. Also her experiences with having the school not give a damn about people tormenting her are relatable and realistic. I reported my bullies a few times and nothing ever happened. I learned quick that the school wasn't on my side and it made me a bit distrustful of authority figures.

She would be proud of me if I skipped meals and always gave me different food from everyone else at dinner. Gave me tips on how to starve myself. Telling me that if I wasn’t skinny, then I wouldn’t get a job and no one would want to be with me. She had issues with her own weight and so projected her issues on me. It really sucked having a mom like that. It really knocks your confidence when your own mom thinks so low of you.

Is Maggie’s mom traumatized by her husband dying from diabetes and that’s why she keeps making a point of having “healthy selections” for Maggie? Because she doesn’t want Maggie to develop diabetes, and, ya know, die? Is it still a micro-aggresion in that situation? (That’s not a sarcastic rhetorical question. Her motivation behind it is trauma based but it’s still fat shaming because of the way she goes about it. So yes it’s still a micro aggression because she could actually have a conversation with her daughter instead of constantly making comments that clearly hurt Maggie. The mother is reacting to her trauma by projecting and giving Maggie more trauma, so she is still responsible for that, it’s similar to the concept of the circle of abuse. One person’s trauma in no way excuses their treatment of others.

People always say this, but do they ever look at pictures of real teenagers from the 50s? They look like middle-aged people with mortgages and failing marriages.

As someone who grew up in North Carolina, this is literally the most accurate depiction of a homecoming dance/football game I've seen in media.This literally could have been shot at my high school and looked the exact same (Windows movie maker and all). We were in the local news every year for our homecoming queen/king. One year we rented classic cars for the king/queen to ride into the game on. And we were the poor school lmao

There's usually something else going on. I had a nightmarish relationship with my body early on, but it was one in a host of issues. Also, while emotional eating is a thing, that doesn't mean it need to happen like 50 times in the movie. Being fat is more complicated than that. Genetics plus behavior plus other stuff. For me, it was always a huge insecurity that underpinned my self esteem issues, but I still had a lot of other non weight related problems because being a teenager is super hard.

If Mom was concerned that much for her daughter's health, she might have said, "We as a family are going to make a healthy change," and shifted dining options and what was stocked in the fridge for the entire family. Instead, she had one "normal" meal for "normal" people and diet food set aside for The Fat One. And kept high calorie items that clearly caused real problems for her daughter seemingly on hand at all times. Instead of singling out the girl for nasty asides about how she should exercise more, she could have scheduled actual fun physical activities with everyone participating. Maggie still could overeat outside of the home, clearly, but the effect would be watered down some, and her self esteem wouldn't be continually taking hits from the person she needs the most support from, and their relationship would be less fraught.

I like the idea of the whole self-hate inner dialogue manifesting as her mother but I don't agree with it really being herself all along. It should have been the reverse. What I've learned is that negative self-talk is so hard to weed out because we hear our own voice and trust it. We misconstrue it as truth because we take that voice for our own belief. It's only when you realize that that negative voice doesn't belong to you are you able to distance yourself enough to argue with it. Many of the things I took for granted about myself were really just things my mother had said that buried deep into my self-worth. When I stopped hearing my own voice say bad things about me and recognize my moms voice, was I able to finally tell it to SHUT UP.

I was personally totally clueless about being flirted with (still am). As I saw myself as so unattractive, the idea I was ever being flirted with a foreign concept to me. I was also grossed out by dudes and hadn't come to terms with being a lesbian in high school (and wouldn't until after graduation). So part of me might have also been operating as a blocker of dudes getting to close .
