I recently got Super Meat Boy's platinum and wanted to talk about how hard it is, and why I think more folks should try it! Catch me live here: / sparkcity
I agree, probably best quality overall of all the recent trophy hunting channels! Shame he doesn’t get as much attention as he’s really good at editing and giving insightful commentary
@@bengopalmi80 Hey thanks very much for the kind words! I haven't produced much content, though I'm looking to change that soon, so watch out for that!
I just found this video on my home page, and I just realized that you were a streamer I watched play Fall Guys a ton in 2021 :O This vid is fire, happy to see you're still around and kickin'!
Amazing video! I hope you continue to keep making videos. The quality of editing was really good I’m usually very picky about what sort of content I watch and rarely steer away to new channels but this was such a good video! ❤
Thank you for this amazing perspective. It really helped encourage me to keep up the grind on harder games. I subbed from this video and look forward to more amazing content from you!! And congrats on this plat!
This video pretty great. I really appreciate your discussion on the psychological techniques behind how you overcame the obstacles to get the platinum. I've definitely experienced the inevitability threshold with tricky bosses in FromSoft games. The dynamic between confidence and skills is a really fascinating way to look at the way people engage with difficult challenges (in life and also in games)
Hey thanks so much for the kind words! I definitely agree that there's a lot of similarities in the way folks overcome challenges in life and games, and I feel like the more folks put their own unique spins out there, the better odds we have of other folks finding an approach that works for them!
Damn man, this is a great video. Gotta say you deserve a lot more attention for this editing and commentary, not to mention the grind itself. As someone who has just started doing RU-vid daily as much as possible, I’m definitely taking notes from this video!
Nice job! I'm currently working on this myself and have been watching tons of videos like this for encouragement and some advice to keep in mind! This definitely gave me some encouragement and good advice to keep in mind, and for that I'm thankful! So far I have Wood Boy, Needle Boy, and Salt Boy down!
awesome video, I did this platinum back in high school and it's been a running joke in one of my friend groups that I simply have the trophy. There are definitely harder challenges out there but it was honestly a lot of fun like you said. Keep up the good work 👍
This is really similar to the insight that helped me chill out with rally games - don't reset, just keep going if you can. Finish, don't worry about placement, just focus on consistency and how to reduce the number of wipeouts. I had been pretty good at it already, but it helped me enjoy the process more, and I found I climbed the leaderboards in longer rallies as faster, riskier strats made people crash out. Similar with runs of Pistol Whip I've been doing, I learned to finish runs even when they sucked, and then start again, rather than resetting early. It's an autoscroller rhythm style where each level is a song, and it feels especially soul-crushing to reset something like that because the time you lost is absolutely fixed. Doing complete levels every time makes it more fun and gets you to a level of competence in every part of the level much faster.
Totally agree! I used to do speedrunning, and I detested having to reset runs, I ended up just spamming full runs of the game, that's probably where my tendency to not break up Meat Boy worlds came from! Messing around on map screens or character select screens, dying on the same level 5 times in a row, that stuff got to me way more than choking, and I had some heartbreakers during this plat, haha
@@thesparkcity Gotta maintain the love of the game. Also the platinum is awesome. I'm actually more impressed at the way you worked smarter than I am with raw twitch skills or perseverance.
@@excrubulent I've been gaming a long time, but I've never had insane twitch reflexes or anything! But what I lack in reaction time, I make up for in patience (aka stubbornness haha) Thanks for watching the vid! I appreciate the kind words
So I haven't started meat boy yet I was going to but a friend needed help with bo3 realistic so I got that plat and your video really helped me get past the hard parts specifically 8:22 I'm gonna do meat boy soon tho
Very interesting video, I've stop playing after having done 3 worlds without dying, just because I was bored and not having fun at all it was purely tryhard. I should try it again some time... For now I'm working on Crypt of the Necrodancer's and it's a you said but much much worse as I really fear I'll have to accept I don't have the capacity to accomplish it :(
@@thesparkcity it is, so much it becomes absurd haha but I'm having so much more fun with it I love that game ☺️ Even if the achievements would drive anyone crazy
Congrats! I myself have gotten every trophy except light & dark rapture + cotton alley deathless. I always said to myself that I'd get back at it and I'd just take a little break... I've taken a 4 month break now and have platted a couple other games. I honestly don't know if I'll ever commit it like I used to with missile boy and the dark hell trophy... How many hours did it take you for the platinum btw?
Wow 60 hours and under 10k deaths is really impressive! 🎉 You are for sure a top tier gamer ❤ That guy with the 100 hours of pain and misery is just trash 😂
LOL I mean, I don't think anyone who struggles with the game is trash (I certainly had my fair share), I just wanted to point out that folks shouldn't see those comments and get scared away from a game!
@@thesparkcity Game soundtracks are generally ok to use, it's songs published by artists that you have to be careful of. If an artist releases a song in a game separately, it's most likely copyrighted, but if it is just listed as a part of the OST, you should be ok to use it.
Well im actually wondering if I should attempt it now. I only have 2 platinum, (almost 3, as I need only one achievement for saint row IV and its the 40h, so im just.. waiting) but, I did do geometry dash on steam, and im wondering if it can be comparable too?
You should give it a try! Worst case scenario, you earn some trophies from the game and can always come back to it later! I wouldn't worry too much about how many platinums you have, it might make some difference those plats have given you more experience with precision platformers, but even then, i hadn't played a precision platformer in years before I fired up Super Meat Boy. Give it a go!
Its unique, I like the idea of your character being useless. Not like RPGs where 'lv 1s' are still skilled in their role. You feel like youve actually grown through the playthrough.
@@iThinkMyNamesBenH Agreed! I liked that it did the Deus Ex thing where there were actually multiple solutions to *most* problems, and some of the things the game takes into account (character hygiene) are super cool! But for whatever reason, it didn't grab me like I hoped it would
I've been playing platformers for years, I think death count is a poor marker of skill anyway, I only brought it up to show how meaningless it is (in comparison to something like 22k haha)
10:08 you could not be more correct God, its awful, its non sense The wall jumps sometimes are bugged too and I jump straight up instead of away from the wall And also the fact I cant rebind keys (pc, keyboard player) really shows how outdated this game is
Oh yeah, the straight up wall jump is such a tilter! It's pretty nutty that the controls can't be rebound, even something like Oblivion from 2006 had fully rebindable controls haha
I remember that when I first played this game I thought the controls were superb. Nowadays, I've tried going for the deathless achievements on and off and the awkward momentum and bugs are one of the main things keeping me from wanting to grind it harder. I'm glad Edmund got it right later with The End is Nigh though, maybe the same thing will happen again but I'm confident that those controls will always hold up.
@@thegoosh6469 Yeah i mean the game is like 15 years old now, and was programmed by a dude out of his bedroom, so it's probably not going to age well LOL Not sure if super meat boy forever has the same issues, maybe it's better?
Interesting to hear you share the same sentiment that I do regarding level order. In my impossible boy run, I ended up doing 19-20 and then 1-18. Overall, really great video. I'd never thought that I would even get close to obtaining this platinum, but the "inevitability threshold" really exists! So many thoughts and feelings that I am unable to articulate are explained in great detail here.
the platinum on console is much simpler. on steam you gotta get all characters, get 100 bandages, and beat kids xmas world from super meat world in one sitting. all that adds up to make it AWFUL on steam, but mostly its because of the kids xmas stuff which is miserable. gg on doing all the worlds hitless btw i cant imagine doing cotton alley dark world hitless
other than the xmas chapter, the trophies are all the same on console, minus the glitch worlds, but the glitch worlds and the xmas chapters aren't too bad, even in one sitting
I'm currently trying to get the platinum. I already have 25k deaths and im only in hell dark world... how can you say its not the biggest nightmare?? And how you only died 9k times. I played videogames since i was 6 almost every single day, now im 23. AM I THAT BAD?
Nah I don't think so! If we're talking gaming experience, I've gamed for around 28 years, haha. But I also have played a lot of precision platformers and platformers in general, so maybe that's part of it? But either way, I don't think death count is a good indicator of skill, I mainly posted it to compare to someone else's 22k deaths to say that the big numbers shouldn't scared them off. Don't worry about the deaths, keep pushing! You'll break through eventually! It's only a matter of time
I've thought about doing "Super Meat Boy" myself a bunch of times. I usually play more niche games so something like it would be great for gaining some recognition but I always arrive at the same issue. I'm just not interested in playing the game at all in general. I've managed to put myself through some difficult and time-consuming platinums before...but they were always games I wanted to play first and foremost. And ultimately, that's the reason why I manage to push through so many of them. Cause beneath all the trouble and frustration, I was still doing something I enjoyed. It was the kind of realization I needed. So really, I am glad for everyone who manages to finish this, even if it's not quite as difficult as people hold it up to be. It's something I just can't see myself doing since I'm not interested.
I'm the same way! I played Enter the Gungeon for an hour, and even though it's estimated at a much shorter time and easier difficulty, it would still have taken too long for since I didn't enjoy the core gameplay at all. I've always enjoyed platformers, so that helped with Meat Boy, but the challenge itself and the satisfaction of overcoming it became a decent substitute for the enjoyment of the game, at least for as long as I played Meat Boy. But I'll likely never go back and play it again, now that I've done the plat, haha
