The Prince and the Showgirl (1957) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #ThePrinceandtheShowgirl
A dazzling American showgirl (a luminous Marilyn Monroe) captures the monocled eye of an imperious European monarch (Sir Laurence Olivier, who also produces and directs) as more than opposites attract in this classic comedy romance (and subject of recent critical rave My Week with Marilyn ). He's Prince Regent of Carpathia, an arrogant stuffed shirt visiting London for the 1911 coronation of King George V. She's Elsie Marina of Milwaukee, short on social graces but long on common sense, in London as a third-blonde-from-the-left Gaiety Girl.
Directed By Laurence Olivier
Starring Marilyn Monroe, Laurence Olivier, Richard Wattis

Everyone knows that Marilyn was already a star before leaving Hollywood and joining the Actors Studio. What she wanted and achieved with this film, at least in Europe, was respect. The star won the David di Donatello award. It is undeniable that under Lee and Paula Stransberg she has evolved greatly as an actress. Oliver may have been tough as a director, but beyond beautiful, Marilyn is adorable in this movie. In each frame that appears, her interpretation is always irreplaceable, without the affectations, hesitations and ups and downs of some previous films. Unlike Bus Stop, where the rodeo scenes disrupted the unfolding of the film, here Marilyn has the opportunity to act in style.

In the years after her death, Olivier spoke warmly of her, and of his regret that they didn't get along better during the making of the film. He praised her charisma and natural talent as a film actor to the skies. Those comments are easily findable on RU-vid. He never said a bad word about her publicly.

And he married Vivien Leigh but the world is the world

SHe’s the male fantasy maybe in a caricature type of way. But the lady knows what she is doing, and knows how to sell herself. Every role she plays the male always succumbs to her. To me she represents the power of femininity. It looks like she’s the ditzy and playable one but the men are always doing exactly what she needs of them. People who only see her ditzy exterior have no creativity.

I can’t believe people are able to judge her just from watching her star in films. The only time anyone can ever have a stable opinion on someone is if they’ve met them and lived alongside them long enough to know their personality. And the only exception is being exceptionally rude to anything and anyone. I cannot comprehend any of these comments.

All of that was a character she created “Marilyn” in public! It was all and act! Norma Jean was much quieter, shy, and a bit of a loner! She had a little girl voice, which she would lower for many roles and public appearances! You only saw Norma Jean in a few interviews, but of course she was dressed in character! At the pool and beach she was natural! That is why she could go out in public with no makeup and not be bothered!

John, that little bit of belly is natural on every woman and produced by the skin around that area being more elastic than in other parts of the body, which leads to fat cells being deposited in there. It is normal to women because that skin must be able to stretch in the case of pregnancy, but it is always stretchy, not just in that context. If you have a female lover, just ask her to grab the skin on her shoulders and then try to stretch it. Observe how almost nonexistent the elasticity is. Then ask her to put her fingers around the skin on her tummy and try to stretch it. The results will be greatly different. I don't know the aspects of Marilyn's life at the moment of filming, but to explain why you can see this on her body but not on the body of other female stars at the time, whose phisyques were similar to her own: _Marilyn probably did not wear a girdle._ A girdle is the reminiscence of a corset that women in the 50's wore to entirely forbid their natural form for showing in the lower abdomen area. I believe that in the case of this dress, which was described as skintight by reviews at the time, the outline of a girdle would have been visible. ^^ I hope you are well!
