I've seen comments left and right from folks--some of whom might not even be Canadian!--claiming this new crossbow is illegal in Canada. My thoughts? Watch this video.

This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it and I aim to help you love it, too!
Bunjie is a 2010 Excalibur Axiom Crossbow. After a decade of killing deer, hogs, squirrels--you name it!--with the "stock" 20" Easton Firebolt arrows, Bunjie experimented with heavy arrows during 2020 but has since decided to hunt with 20" ProFlight arrows from Easton, for a total arrow weight of just under 400 grains when tipped with a 100 grain Rage Crossbow Hypodermic Broadhead. This keeps old Bunjie around 300fps.
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. She also shoots ProFlights (16.5" variety) with a 150 grain Rage Trypan Crossbow Broadhead, for a total arrow weight around 415 grains.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester .30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...

Rich, I love watching all your videos! You always make them really interesting. I got into crossbows and crossbow hunting because of you. I did hunt with a compound before but you made crossbow hunting something appealing to me. I liked that you were hunting with a simple crossbow, one that your average Joe could do maintenance on. In fact you made videos on proper maintenance, string changes, upgrading your scope so everyone could do it themselves. That gives you a better feeling, more of an accomplishment when you can do it yourself. I always liked that you kept it simple. I always thought now here's a guy that is a true hunter at heart, he doesn't bend to the pressure of having the fastest crossbow, the narrowest or all the modern hype of today's crossbows. He enjoys hunting and being out there. Using the bow that you do makes you the special person that you are! Not everyone can keep bringing good content like you do, hunting with a simple but highly effective recurve design like you do! Bunjie is our friend and that's who you are! We hope to see Bunjie for a long time to come. Would it be the same with a 500fps or Twinstrike crossbow? I think not. You and your daughter Genevieve have the best videos around, down to earth and very family oriented. You deffinatly make me want to watch every episode. So thank you for making the videos you do. My cousin got one of these a few months ago. Hes been having heck with the strings, hes gone through two already and hes only got around 300 shots on it. He got the burris oracle for it and they make an impressive combo. We were putting bolts in a block target at 200 yards.

I just ordered your book off of Amazon I work in a nursing home as an activities assistant used to work in the kitchen I figured some of the guys would like the story's I work on a Alzheimer's and dementia unit and im tired of reading good housekeeping or vogue and stuff lol thanks for being a great content creator and I hope to use my crossbow more in indiana next deer season but I will have to get a crossbow license the regular archery license does not cover crossbows

As always Rich, you've done a thorough job of educating your audience! I think you've sold a few Ravin R 500's in Canada already. This is going to be lethal on bears this Spring. By the way at AMAZON today the CP400 is $665 with out cocking device and $850 with the crank! And it has HeliCoil technology as a RAVIN cousin!

Great video. I'm going with your advice to get a crossbow that shoots around 350fps. I ordered the Tenpoint Titan m1 crossbow with the accu draw. It's well balanced and in my price range of $850. Thanks for helping me to get the right crossbow for me. Keep the videos coming.

I was told by Field and Stream that the Ravin and Barnett (which I own one) were the two crossbows that come back the most for warranty work or repairs. They told me Wicked Ridge for budget and Excalibur for high end were the best brands they sold and they had a big selection and their own indoor range.

First of all Rich, I have enjoyed your channel for the last couple seasons and am following you on Facebook. The information you are putting out there is awesome. It all really comes down to simple economics supply and demand. Double barrels, 500 FPS is crazy to think about but it’s that basic rule of thumb you continue to move and innovate or you fail to grow and stay in business. As for me, I am a teacher and can’t afford something like this but for those who can, go for it and I’m looking forward to seeing the reviews from ya. Thanks sir

Have you narrowed your search down to atleast a few different crossbows? I know I can wholeheartedly recommend the 10 pt RS470. I have the sig system on it and it is truly fantastic. But that would make another great video. Best of luck

Alabama law set the minimum of 100 pound draw weight. No maximum has been set.

Like our knife laws, made by people that take movies as their inspiration, are based on feelings and what the scary man did in that movie that one time......

I got the Killer Instinct ripper 415 (retail $359) out of the box it was accurate as could get and let me tell you when I dropped 3 deer last season, I dropped them where they stood, they didn’t move. Using 100 grain 2 inch xtreme rage xbow broadheads with some mossy oak bolts. Highly recommended!

Thanks Rich I myself tried to call Cabela’s but was not able to talk to anyone there about this Xbow and what they knew. But you are right it will also depend on provincial jurisdictions; example here in Saskatchewan we are not allowed to hunt deer with shotguns only in certain wildlife management zones about 4 I believe that allows shotguns for deer hunting and the whole province consists of these zones approximately 60! Here in my zone we early bow season that doesn’t include crossbow unless like myself have a disability certificate that allows me to us my crossbow during bow season that is September 15 - 30 then October 1 is start of ML and crossbow Yet in other provinces shotguns are included in most areas and this is only whitetail deer each animal has different restrictions here can get rather confusing!So that is the thing the new ravin may get restricted by local requirements and I mention this because I know lots of Americans come here to hunt our big game animals so they should make sure they are specific about their firearms and crossbows when speaking with the outfitters they are using and for what game they plan on hunting! For black bear it is very open though the seasons! Thanks for checking about the PAL for the new Ravin that law is federal but I do know that there has been talk of crossbows being included but it hasn’t happened yet!

Amazing that the emphasis in the industry is faster and faster, which translates to making them harder to cock, less fun to shoot, and not to mention, CRAZY expensive. I would like to see them use technology to make a crossbow that will shoot like 300 fps? that can be cocked BY HAND. I had my old Jennings Devastator crossbow out today. It will shoot a 550 grain arrow with a 200 grain point at 233 fps and I can cock it by hand all day long. It pulls 125 lbs, but is wide, heavy, and very loud. I am sure with newer components, the industry could make it lighter, quieter, and easy to cock. The Devastator shoots with 66 pounds of KE which will easy shoot thru the shoulder blade of a deer with a single bevel two blade broadhead.

Rich. I ended up going with a TenPoint after the limb on my micro 335 broke. I got new limbs free of charge from Excalibur so kudos to them! I’ll keep the 335 as a loaner and a backup but after looking at all the offerings and shooting g various bows, the TenPoint stood out. But you’re more a Strat guy and I’m a LP guy so... lol! Good luck with the search for an upgrade to Bunji.

I just saw the R18 that rotates the VertiCoil Cam System 720 degrees that is 18 inches in length with a detachable stock. Shoots 330fps. Honestly looks like a bull pup style gun. Weight is 6lbs bare bones.

I love the hard work and thought you put into you videos Rich. The only firearms you can buy without a pal. Is a matchlock, wheel lock and flintlock. A percussion or cap lock does need a pal. and air guns under the 500 fps rule don't need a pal. Come On Canada. but like you found out a cross bow is not a firearm lol. I hunt with flintlock and Excalibur 355 micro. And FYI Rich I and giving up on the girl friend and buying the twin strike. Ontario Canada. All hail Bunji

Just wanted to say , I love the 20-25 yard filmed shots because you can see every twitch of the animal , the sneaking like a ghost through the woods everything has to be right when its close needless to say smell, hiding , noise. I love the fact you used a simple bow you can string yourself. I have a ten point cant do that on mine anyway id love to have the newest fastest but what you have so far is good enough to get those wonderful lifetime experience's. ( with that Ravin cocking device you could shoot a hundred bolts with it and once you tuned in the accuracy take it off I think? , because of the weight)

In NY It’s due to the axle to axle length, based on archaic laws most likely to ensure sufficient kinetic energy for a kill. THEY MEED TO REVISE THE LAWS

Didn’t realize it had a cap on draw weight. From NYS DEC Minimum limb width: 17 inches (outer tip of limbs, excluding wheels and cams, uncocked) Minimum peak draw weight: 100 pounds Maximum peak draw weight: 200 pounds. Minimum overall length: 24 inches from butt-stock to front of limbs.

What irks me is as a disabled person I can’t use a crossbow for archery season but I can add a device that holds my bow string drawn and releases with a trigger, so basically a vertical crossbow. They don’t make any sense in NY.

Ok Ravin says it shoots 500 fps . What if i use my own arrows witch could be heavier and use a heavier broadhead now chronograph this setup and i probably will only get something less than 500fps by not using what Ravin suggest that i use . Does this sound right .

Yes, if you add weight beyond the 400 grains, it will definitely slow down.

Ravin’s nocks are proprietary. Only their bolts will engage the anti dry fire mechanism properly and allow the bow to fire.

Airguns are odd because Canada cares about fps. But most other countries that regulate care about foot pounds of energy. The uk being limited to 12fpe unless you get a special license.

Canadian regs. state air guns and other barreled weapons designed to have: a muzzle velocity of 152.4 meters per second or less (500 ft/second) a muzzle energy of 5.7 joules or less So is a crossbow deemed a barreled weapon? think this comes down to interpretation? It does not state any weapon? I'm also looking to upgrade this year! Sam Wasaga Beach, Ontario

How about this? Archery seasons were created to be highly challenging seasons with primitive weapons. Maybe anything with a rangefinder , drawlock, or cams, heck or trigger be moved to firearm season.

I must be difficult to make a law based on fps, cause that’s Only a number written in a data sheat! Probably test shot with a surtain arrow weight, right? As soon you shoot a heavier arrow, it’s not 500 fps any more. Good vid.

Most crossbows speed ratings are with a 350 grain bolt which isnt a very ethical weight to be hunting with.

I believe in research especially when spending $$$$$ however I also believe in practicality when it comes to tools. Yes I called my crossbow a tool because it enables me to harvest food for my family. My first rule when selecting a tool is can I repair it if needed, order parts and return the tool to fully functioning state. The recurve crossbow allows me to do this with very little equipment. By going to a compound style unit one now needs to have a bow press instead of the string tool. So just my piece of advice stick with a recurve.

i read, that a law was passed in 1995, in canada, that would make licensing mandatory for crossbows. but, it has never been brought into force. also, i know that many are now whining and trying to get crossbows banned from the bow-only season. it was a topic in past years and was on the table this year again, but never recognized. and sadly, it's bow hunters pushing for this. one they did pass, was banning cellular trailcams during hunting season.

If you do go outside the realm of a recurve crossbow as you have to every right to do, I’ll be in disbelief and my world will tilt differently for awhile. I’ll get over it! I know it’s not legal in NY. I bought a raven and didn’t know that and wasn’t told that by the people at bass pro so $1800 and can’t hunt with it. And that’s because the axle to axle isn’t 17in

Here in Canada I am thinking this would illegal without a PAL (Possession and Acquisition Licence) it’s not a firearm but anything that shoots 500+ fps needs a license, I can’t even buy a .177 pellet gun without a license if it exceeds 495 fps

It's legal in Canada, no PAL, crossbows are not firearms...that's the point of this video...but yes airguns are covered by PAL, also mentioned in the video LOL

Another bit of interesting firearms law information. Neither BAFT or RCMP consider a FLINTLOCK to be a firearm. The key word being flintlock. It can down a moose, bear, elk etc as well as deer turkey and squirrel depending on the caliber selection. BUT they are not considered to be firearms. A Canadian can order one from a retailer in the USA and it can be shipped by USPS to Canada and the purchaser can go down to the post office and pick it up. NO PAL NEEDED. Crossing the border either way requires no paperwork. I have done so several times. In doing so, I always advise the border patrol agent on which ever side I am crossing too, that it is in the vehicle. No problems to date.The same goes for crossing state line as far as I know. Ship it directly to your address no FFL holder needed.

Why on earth would you consider a crossbow that would, quite possible, implode if you happen to cut the string while inserting the bolt? The cam-less Excaliburs win just for that every time in my engineer’s mind.

Because 500 fps and 7 inches wide, for a couple of reasons, and this comes from an Excalibur guy lol
