The Quarry is really fun to go through but feels like it's a bit lacking in some areas. My Site ► phelous.com Support on Patreon ► / phelous Twitter ► / phelous Instagram ► / phelanporteous Facebook ► / therealphelous
I'm iffy on the designs of the werewolves (they look too similar to the creatures in Until Dawn), but I *love* how they transform. They just explode in a big, gory mess. It's buildup with payoff.
I think they wanted it to be a mystery what the monsters are but sacrificed the design of the werewolves to make it more ambiguous. But yeah I wished they looked more wolf and Silas was actually white furred.
I love the British-isms that made their way into the game. It's clear that despite how incredibly American this game is supposed to look, you can tell it was made in Europe. The whole "video nasty" section is probably the most obvious example, but I think there are also little things, like British spellings of words, and maybe referring to a parking area as a car park. :-D Also, I really like how so much of the footage in this review is stuff I haven't seen - the paths really do take you in different directions.
It boggles my mind that they made a spiritual successor to Until Dawn, and the “improvement” they made was to make the 20 Minutes with Jerks segment LONGER.
You know, when I saw the option to sabotage the car by breaking the fuel line, I thought, "Okay, so the most likely consequence of taking that path would be that the car later ends up exploding from the leaking gas, taking a werewolf and maybe a main character with it." Hearing you then say that the choice doesn't actually matter makes me feel a little disappointed. Real missed opportunity on part of the game developers.
Beware, Eliza Vorez sees you making fun of the dialogue for being dated. She sees you making jokes about David Arquette doing horror outside of Scream. She sees you pointing out Lance Henriksen barely having any dialogue. She sees everrrrythiiiing.
Love the different video style- I love y’all’s commentary and jokes when you’re together and the more “traditional” RU-vidr stuff in the voiceover. The whole series of games is fun even when there’s issues and quirks. I never get enough of people checking them out.
I don't know, I just feel like Until Dawn was more suspenseful. Maybe it's because it takes place in freezing winter, not warm summer. Or maybe it's just because Until Dawn came out first and The Quarry is, inarguably, very similar?
Dammit, I deleted my comment about how I think that the plot being hinged on Jacob's stupid choice was a bad decision, but then I saw that Phelan liked it-I thought I was being too contrarian. It's something that I think shouldn't have been a player choice, and if everyone had to be stuck there because of Jacob sabotaging the engine, it should've been a secret kept from the player and NEEDED to be acknowledged by more characters than just MAYBE Emma.
Oh that would have been so much better if we found out Jacob sabotaged the car. It would have made sense with his personality, added the drama of potential forgiveness, and maybe make some people suspicious of him.
When you just rewatched the OSW David Arquette Trilogy and Phelan spends the whole review making references to WCW World Champion David Arquettw: SHHH-YYYUUUHHH-T UUUUHHP!
I deadass am one of those people, overall the characters and story are better than Until Dawn-the pacing is just absolutely awful in comparison to Until Dawn. (The dialogue is bad in both, I’m sorry, love the games to death, but the dialogue is bad in both😂)
The characters ARE better. The overarching lores are arguable. But the characters in Until Dawn were stereotypes and cannon fodder. The characters in the Quarry are still stereotypes, but more well written in order to be more palatable. Some of the Quarry characters have actual arcs.
I would love to see you guys tackle the Dark Pictures games! There's some really good stuff to be found there, and also some hilariously bad stuff too.
weird when i played i didn't have any issues with the brightness, looking at the footage i remember those rooms being clearly able to see in them. but i never follow those "put brightness til you can barely see shape" things since those always are awful.
Just finishing watching, lol. I also had trouble with the werewolf in the Cabin after getting the silver bullet and used my lives to get Kaitlyn to live. I also thought the Phone charging part was stupid and the werewolf design was meh. I would never have gotten that from them. I think there were even references to fur colour that made me assume the characters were seeing traditional werewolves
All I can think of when it comes to The Quarry is the Hissing Wastes from Dragon Age Inquisition - because I was kinda, sorta watching a playthrough of The Quarry on the side while exploring, doing side quests and farming for resources in DAI. Lol But I guess even without playing something myself at the same time I wouldn't really have been too interested in the storyline of this.
"The Quarry? More like The Sorry...I sabotaged the car and made all of you in endure what will likely be the worst night of your life! Amirite?! Guise?!" would have been a more sincere attempt at Jacob having a mea culpa than what they ultimately wrote. Fun game overall but man the scripting was weird and the stakes never felt as high as Until Dawn.
A lot feels like scope creep, like they wanted this to be much more expansive than the Dark Pictures games or even Until Dawn but they ran out of time/money so subplots don’t pay off and the denouement is done via the podcast as it's relatively cheap to just record some extra dialogue without animation. Ironically the Dark Pictures games feel more reactive by being forced to be smaller and more focused. The Devil In Me even has multiple romances that can pay off or fizzle depending on choices
I've heard that the paranormal podcast stuff at end rather than additional scenes was something they ended up doing because of Covid stuff - but I can't recall the source for that so I can't swear it's true.
I thought the reason some of the older sayings like "Cool beans" was because people in their teens to thirties say older phrases because they are reclaiming language. Not all of them, just a certain amount of them. It looks playable, but it just doesn't interest me enough to buy it.
Man that is easily the most Justice Smith version of a CGI Justice Smith that I have ever seen up to and including the special effects from Jurassic World and Detective Pikachu.
Games like this with many branching paths are tough, from a design standpoint. You have to work on all this mocap, cg and dialog for all of these potential scenarios that 95% of players would never encounter in their runs. Budget-wise, I feel like it's a hard thing to justify doing. Much less doing to the nines.
I do love that these type of games like Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures series have great casts and The Quarry is no exception. This probably have my favourite cast out of all of them
That’s what I said in the comments too bro and I never actually played The Dark Pictures Series or the Quarry but I did play Until Dawn though lol bro and I like Until Dawn cast especially Hayden Panettiere was actually in that game too love her as a actress too bro 😎
Def gonna check this out later. Tbh though I think the people that make these games haven't really manage to capture whatever it was that make Until Dawn great, but The Quarry definitely came the closest to me, and yet there is still something missing from it. Although I'm a little biased because to this day I'm still super into the lore of Until Dawn's wendigos, the mountains and that sanatorium. Shame that VR game they made as a prequel, The Impatient, was so weird and... VR, which sucks.
I do love this game but the lack of a proper ending was the biggest disappointment for me. Even a Fallout: New Vegas style ending with a static picture with the characters talking about their fate would have been awesome. I really loved the atmosphere and 80s horror aesthetic and the animated twilight zone tutorials. Even a lot of the newspaper headline endings would have been great to see. Apparently the xbone version runs then the PS5 🤷🏽♀️
I love the Quarry! [& Until dawn] Granted there is indeed room for improvement [for both games]. Still, it's on the right track when it comes to interactive movie games. & I hope to see more of these kinds of games [vastly improved] in the future.
The games this company makes tend to have awkward dialogue, but I think some of the scenes in this felt more natural than the previous games. Not great, but damn there were a lot of scenes that felt really awkward in the Dark Anthology Series.
I completely forgot about this game but I do remember that A V tuber I liked she played it I think a few years ago or so and she was having fun with it with the only main negative to her being that she was trying to save everyone but the game screwed her over and most of the characters were dead. But apparently this game does the exact same thing that the other game this group did in that none of your decisions even matter and none of the endings even give you a satisfying conclusion. But I will say I think the only things I will remember about this game is the fact that Brenda Song aka Tipton from Suite life of Zack and Cody was in this which was a nice surprise to see her again, there was a snack song that I can't get out of my head lol and finally oh yeah this game was tonal inconsistent. Great look into this you guys!
As far as these types of games go, I think the pinnacle (at the moment) is Detroit: Become Human. As far as combination of story options and cinematics go. I know there are a lot more lower budget games that may give more story branches.
That feels like damning with faint praise considering that Conner's route in that game is the only one consistently thought of positively. IMO, Markus' part is very underdeveloped considering how important it seems, and Kara's story is a melodramatic mish-mash of scenes with an unsatisfying twist ending.
I liked The Quarry, but it didn't live up to Until Dawn. A lot of time playing it, I kept thinking, "Until Dawn did this part better." That and when we have the Dark Pictures Anthology, which, while shorter, tend to have better characters, I just couldn't love The Quarry like I have other Supermassive Games (House of Ashes is still top tier for me). Honestly, the best part of The Quarry was the Hackett family, but we didn't get a lot of time with them (Travis, my poor, abused baby). I could've used more exposition on them. But, so far, one of the best choice games has been Detroit: Become Human. There's nothing about that game I dislike.
I beat the game where everyone survived, including Caleb and Chris Hackett (if Ryan is infected, Chris won't attack him). So, yes. It is possible to save both Ryan and Chris. My second playthrough, I struggled trynna get everyone killed because I wanted the trophy. 😅
I loved this game, warts and all. I don't think the dated slang was intentional, but honestly: is there anything MORE "crappy B-movie" than the young actors talking like it's 10 years ago, even though they probably know updated, more modern slang? I don't think the game is a good parody of schlocky B-movies, I think it's genuinely a great example of one in videogame form. I do think the ending is pretty disappointing as well. Until Dawn's abrupt ending felt earned, literally everything explodes as dawn breaks and the helicopter arrives. This one just felt like the old "we ran out of budget!"
I feel like supermassive games had lightning in a bottle with until dawn cuz I think it released at just the right time but time and time again they failed to recapture the same horror B-movie vibes with the dark pictures anthology. the quarry was probably the closest they got even if does have quite a few glaring flaws you both brought up here
I think The Quarry frustrates me because it's very close to being a great entry into this genre if it had been fully completed. Also they really need to make the replays easier to jump around in.
*The following are the musings of a Salty SEAGULL named EARL who just shows up in my posts whenever he feels like it!* [EARL the Salty SEAGULL:] "I'm guessing that there is no everyone who becomes a Werewolf ending! Or maybe a DLC/New Game plus where you play the game from the Werewolves perspective. That way, you can maybe alter the story by having the characters would get turned learn how to deal with their lycanthropy! Also nice to see Phelous lived cause of his overused recurring gag of dying in reviews! Now I wanna see the playthrough where Allison kills Phelous cause he became a werecat after getting scratched by Phelous D1 (who became a werecat after an ill advised plan to turn back into a human backfired) and the only way to cure him was for him to regenerate Doctor Who style (killing the original werecat doesn't cure those it sired)!"
I'm extremely confused as to why you decided to write this comment as a character and with a paragraph beforehand telling us that it would be in-character.
'Our Werewolves Are Different" is a thing, and since stories vary from "You're born a werewolf" through "It's a disease" and into "Demonic possession!" it shouldn't be a surprise when someone else has a different idea of what a 'normal' werewolf is.
@@boobah5643 but you can’t be born a werewolf. That would be a lycanthrope. In almost any form of the werewolf myth usually it’s a curse that is passed down through either a bite or a scratch.
Incomplete? Hell yeah. I did all I could to save peeps, invested in the relationships and boom next thing I knew Mrs Palmer was shouting at me like her killed her daugh......son....😅 Which I did...cause I had too. Lol
I was so mad when I finished this game, I fucked up my shot on the silver wolf and it got almost everyone killed. But overall I did enjoy this game, aside from thd same problems I had with Until Dawn- the small amount of real choices, somewhat unsatisfactory conclusions. I believe Changing how you sabotage the car does have one effect. If I remember correctly one of the choices means you can’t find all the clues
Yeah, where you find the body in the lake, but we were wishing it had more of an actually story change effect. It largely changed nothing and influences something pretty random later which easily could have just been rolled into another choice made about diving down into the lake or not.
Not only you can't see where you go in this game BUT the characters are not likable or interresting. Emma just makes vlogs and videos, Abigail has a crush on a guy and likes to draw, Jacob always tells bad jokes, one guy listens to podcasts etc. None of them are funny, entertaining or charming. Sam, Mike and Josh have more perosnality than them. Heck even Emily is more interresting. I remember her, i hate her attitude but it was cool to see her escape the Wendigo and exploring the cave. There's nothing i like or hate about any of the characters here. The only who's cool and brave is the blonde girl who lost an eye, all the others are boring 😒 I say that and never played the game, i only saw 2-3 reviews and let's plays. The werewolves's design is not creative. It's just Wendigo's but with darker skin. Wow so different 😂
This is one of my favorite horror games. The Werewolves aren't my favorite design ever but the story is quite interesting. The music is great too. Especially Sun Goez Down from the streamer mode. It's been added to my halloween Spotify Playlist.
So happy to see you and Allison talk about this game! One of my favourite stories from Supermassive Games, and easily the one I think has the most potential for either a sequel or prequel or remaster. The Quarry has issues, and Allison said it best "it feels a little unsatisfying.", but I think some rewrites and more time to polish it would have made a big difference in the end result!
Arquette mugging SHUDDDDDUP never gets old. I had a blast with this game but the follow-ups as compared to Until Dawn with the police tapes left me a bit miffed, but i cant complain about a new horror homage/game. Been a while since I've played but i let Chris die. Travis live, the eye patch girl live and Ryan/Justice Smith live.

I said nothing like that. It's just that AI has a tendency to write things in very generic ways. It also inherently lacks something like an opinion which is usually added by a comment on a video. An AI just blandly recapping a video is not a good use of AI. It could be an experiment or part of teaching an AI, but it isn't it's own interesting, creative project or something.
I agree the werewolf designs are pretty uninspired. I can make an exception for the enemies in the first game since there's really no basis for what a wendigo would look like but here it just seems lazy. maybe I'm just spoiled by Dog Soldier's werewolves.
None of these games are perfect, but I really appreciate what they do.... My ONLY gripe is... NO ZOMBIE games...!?!? each has a horror trope... but no zombie ideas!?!? Blasphemy!!!
I haven't played the game myself, but having watched people play it, I always get really confused by the plot in the last third. I think it has to do with how inconsistently certain characters show up in the end. Like you said, the Hackett family are both important but weirdly absent for a lot of the game, and the parents just... leave and stop being a threat. The game has an interesting premise, but there's a real lack of development and cohesion when it comes to the characters.
