This model was made in Woodbridge Virginia at one of the two original games workshop stores in the USA. The Woodbridge Virginia store had a machine in the back room (don’t know what they are called) to make metal models for just about any mold from 1992ish to 2002ish. My daughter is currently painting the necromunda gang I had made there 30 years ago.
I've gotten a good laugh out of all of the theories of where this model came from, but this figure was made and packed at the Benson Avenue location in Glen Burnie, MD, exactly as indicated on the blister card. I have no idea where the information "it closed in 1984" comes from, but we were very much casting and packing metal figures at the Glen Burnie location until the early 2000s. I worked there! From that same era, if you remember "Ask Dirty Steve" from White Dwarf in the US version, he was there with me at the time (and we were roommates!), and he only ever worked at the Glen Burnie studio (aside from his stint in retail). Our fantasy campaign and our armies were featured in the US version of White Dwarf 206!
Was that the Battle Bunker? The store where i first got into the hobby, and wish I had spent more time learning from the absolute hobby legends there before it closed
I miss the Battle Bunkers. I used to frequent the Chicago one. Got to sit next to one of the Slayer Sword winners a few times while we worked on figures.
I remember a couple of old Night Goblins from "back in the day." One was mooning the foe, and the other was flipping them the bird. They are rather hard to come by now - kinda wish I hung on to mine.
Something that strikes me more with each new video is how you really love the world of fantasy. There's no pretence here just raw passion for fantasy. A passion I share, so I'm aware how it feels to be someone with a lifelong love of fiction, and am readily immersed in a fantasy setting without need for convincing haha. Thanks again for the great video.
I love the Vallejo Metal Color range. You can brush it straight on so long as you don't dunk your brush. If you do take too much, a quick touch to some kitchen roll will wick away enough so it'll go on super silky and not flow away like crazy.
Totally agree! I have him, the "original" Zodgrod Wortsnagga, and Kaptin Badrukk, and the OG Nob Kommando and for my money you don't get too much orkier than those guys.
I like the idea of picking two random greens, especially since your technical routine includes mixing your own shades on the palette everytime and basecoating, washing, highlighting in layers with smooth transitions creating countless numbers of hues anyway.. :D
I had quite a few pre slotta citadel orcs back in the 80s, they had a typically more fantasy look about them back then, the 1987 variant is when citadel miniatures became more cartoon like, which as a kid back then, I lapped that shit up, they were goofy and silly and as a 13 year old, that's what you wanted!
There were so many great old runt models with specific flavor to accompany specific orks - with spanner to help a mekboy, with cutters to assist a painboy, with ammo box or shell to back up a gun crew
👍👍 came out great! I'm currently painting the Space Crusade/Star Quest orks and gretchin, they look pretty good for 30 year old sculpts! Pics will be on discord, eventually 😊
Love your work on the runtherdz, and zodgrod theory. I think the old Ork shook attack gun Would be a good project and look great in your army - you also need a Runtherdz to field one in the old rules. Keep the good stuff coming!
Nice tip on the liquidy metal color paints mixed the glass medium. I've been mixing it Pro Acryl metal colours that are very thick. Makes a nice in between.
Watching this reminded me of the old pewter orks I still have. I do still have unpainted the original Zodgrod Wortsnagga. Glad you showed this since been so long I forgot the back pole with snotling goes with him. Lived in NoVa so all my old Orks from 90-94 were all pewter. I want to go back and finish them.
There was a guy who worked at my local GW store who was adamant taking 40 gretchin was unbeatable as you were getting 40 shots. This was back in 2nd edition. 😂
I have a very old Ork "Tin Boy - Eldar" model. I've kinda wanted to paint it for years. I'm making an Inquisition army (for no reason) and he might make a good addition to a retinue.
Games Workshop Glen Burnie, MD had a warehouse shop that did pewter castings. This was one of them. I have the exact one from my visit to the location in the Summer of 1999 (one of two visits).
For the metal colour, mixing acrylic ink with it works rather well I found. My necrons have dull aluminium mixed with violet ink to give a nice colour. Though I'm tempted to strip them and try and again with violet mixed with blue ink mixed with the metal to give much more of a purple tone. Also, there is a special metal medium sold for those paints to do what you did with gloss medium, I'd imagine it probably doesn't impact the metallic nature of the paint like the medium might.
Always love seeing the old models, i myself have had many versions of my orks since 99. When 9th edition came our group made a big push to dust off our collections and i started painting up my pile of old RT/2nd ed era orks! Though we dont play a lot of 40k in general i still love my orks!
Just like Orks, I'd say another unique GW loveable race is the Skaven. Probably one of the most fun creations they've made, I only wish GW liked them as much as the fans.
You want recommendations for cool old Ork models? Nothing beats Nazgrub Wurrzag. He was a named character from Gorkamorka. His background is that he was a weirdboy who lived in seclusion, but what really matters is that he looked like an old western prospector Ork. An incredibly characterful model that still looks great today.
Nice results. For some reason I am thinking of the Jim Carrey Grinch. I like the old lore that Orks don't grow hair they wear squigs. (I'm pretty sure the pun was deliberate.)
@@jakerubino3233 cool story, but given that Jay openly admits that he purposely calls the Star Wars prequels the best Star Wars movies because he knows it triggers the fans seems the more relevant fact here. The fact he goes out of his way to keep bringing up the model name seems further indication that’s he’s very aware that it would generate comments. Remember: negative comments and dislikes get paid the same as positive ones. Trolling people makes just as much money, if not more so, than not doing so.
Great video! I think I’ll go dig through my old pile of metal minis and look for some inspiration as well. I think I’ve got a late 80’s early 90’s metal lightning claw terminator in there that should join my modern army
It was possibly one of those models that was on a sculptor's desk that a citadel member thought was done and put into production. That has been done before, Mike Mcvey's Blood Angel Chaplain Lemartes was not done sculpting but was taken from him and put into production anyway.
The stick is a man catcher, or in this case a grot catcha . It's used to disable someone by snagging them around the neck. Some countries still apparently use them as nonlethal weapons.
I'm just watching this after finding your channel recently due to the apple barrel paints video. But I'm sitting on an old metal Boss Zagstruk model that all I did was prime with some white rattlecan primer if you are interested in working a deal out.
Since you asked me to throw you funny orcs for the army, here's a little: Ammo Runts - What kind of a massacre of orcs without a fun robbery? And who will wear all this? These guys! Well, or cartridges? Who knows! Grot Oiler - So many bikes and no one will fill them up?! Ork Deff Dred - Maybe not much for a mobile army, but is a jar with orcs, machine guns and flamethrowers not fun?
That 'stick' as you refer to it, is based on an old weapon called a 'mancatcher'. So in this case, it could be considered as a 'runtcatcher' or a 'grotcatcher'.
Not only the best old ork models but the BEST MODELS EVER made: Rogue Trader ORK WEIRD BOYS!!! I am working on my collection on ALL of them since 2011. Unfortunately, since most of them have very bendable and breakable staffs, it’s hard to find them in good condition.
Nice video! I’ve always thought the runtherd models looked cool. Mine is probably one of my fav paint jobs! On a different note, have you thought of doing a review of Mantic games modular terrain? I’ve been thinking of grabbing a couple of boxes of them, but I really like your looks on things, and I want to see what you think.
That's interesting. I'm gonna have to look through my old blisters and see if any say mad in USA. I know my Lictor box from mid 90s has a sticker that says made in USA, but ya can see made in The UK underneath it.
I like orks, they have a certain charm. But I can’t be pulled away from my guardsmen, but I would like to see more guardsmen on this channel. Jay, this is day 18 of asking, and I love the piratical!
I'm currently working on a Guard army (sort of) and I'm just waiting for the last 3 kits in the mail. Then I will have a completely unique Astra Militarum force that I don't think anyone has tried to make before. It won't be legal... It's based on a 3rd edition force organization chart... But it's my little dream come true.
Naaah, I have a Durthu (special character treeman) from around 1997 (WFB 4e/5e) and it was also made in the US. It's funny because I'm from Spain, but when I bought, the cheaper option was an American eBay seller.
I absolutly ADORE your black templar scouts! As a new painter, any tips or tricks for how you pulled off that paint scheme? Struggeling to get the whole desert feel right on models..
That's a REALLY nice sculpt. Way ahead of the other Ork releases of not only that period, but the later 2nd ed and 3rd ed stuff too. I wonder if maybe the mini suffered from a lot of mis-casts and wasn't given a wider release because of that? There are a lot of textures on him that could perhaps have caused issues? Not an expert, but I can't see any other reason not to release such a nice sculpt.
Might have been made not long before switching to resin and it might have failed in resin too much to see wider distribution and so quietly got dropped from the available models.
