DO NOTE!!! I have had a Lumonix for nearly 20 years and they -WILL NOT- replace the tritium tubes. Once you're done, you're done....and in my case they don't produce the 8400 series anymore. Loved the watch, super disappointed with the company service.
You could replace yourself. Roughly 5 per piece but when you see 50 bucks tritium watch on Ali, it doesn’t make sense. I sold my luminox before the trit ran out. Imagine a Ball watch although they probably have a replacement service I don’t know
I had a similar experience with their factory authorized service center. They’d rather sell you a new watch rather than work on yours, sentimental value be damned. They’re tough watches that will last years, but when it does finally crap out if you don’t know how to fix watches yourself just sell the corpse on eBay so someone will have spare parts!
My Casio Sea Pathfinder has a compass, barometer, depth meter and thermometer. It lights up with a flick of the wrist and runs on sunlight. The best part is that it cost me $3 from a charity shop because the previous owner thought the battery was dead, I put it by the window for a couple of day :D
My "Doomsday" watch would be the Casio GW-9400 Rangeman... GPS, barometer, temperature, altimeter, digital compass, and radio timekeeping...also with solar, one less thing for the "preppers" to worry about!
I know some guys who own this watch. They both say that the solar battery runs low easily and they have to give it extra light with a bright indoor light.
@@johnsmith-gs4qf I own one. So I can say that I have had no issue with mine. What's more if you leave the piece in a dark place, the display shuts off to save the battery.
@@johnsmith-gs4qf I had a G-shock solar too, wore it daily as my beater. In light all the time and it wouldn't stop flashing low battery. Ended up selling it in the end. Citizen eco drive is far better for solar!
@@MPD90 The "unnecessary stuff" can save your life, for example a compass in a whiteout or forest, or a barometer pressure drop alarm gives you time to find shelter... apparently
Just what we need, a battery powered watch with a battery life of as little as 18 months. By the time you need it, the battery will probably be dead already.
Paul Wieringa autos would fit the bill better imo, as you are truly not dependent on any factors except Motion. If you’re motionless, you’re most likely dead and not in need of a watch anyway.
@@rbkfan200 the problem with autos is that you're lucky if it runs + or - 10 seconds per day. And then you run the risk of it needing service after a few years. Won't be many watchmakers in the apocalypse
@@jsebby2284 "+ or - 10 sec per day" Do you have a train to catch? Because in the wilderness, who cares if it's off by a minute or two? Not that it wouldn't put me off, but still...
Golly, around here any prepper worth their salt would buy the Casio solar and spend the surplus on another 700 or so cans of baked beans, and an additional ounce or two of Ag, and some more lead, of course.
Im wondering why you would recommend a quartz with no solar charging as the 'perfect' doomsday watch. Would you want something that is self powered i.e. automatic, mechanical or solar powered quartz?????? Sorry Jody, a firm no from me.
@@seanmaxwell3319 The cheapest? It's the end of the world. Steal something nice, you deserve it. Unless you caused the apocalypse obviously. Then we'll have to have words...
@@MrZog-yv3be if your with people that also have a watch you can split from the group n tell them to meet you back here or another place at a certain time, to cover more ground or go do different things with out loosing people or having to wait un-necessarily thinking has something happend should I go look for them or continue waiting. If your not far from the sea you can start to keep track of the tides for fishing so you don’t have to keep guessing and wasting time going there to check. There’s more reasons why having a watch in a scenario like that would be helpful.
Your quote-----"Luminox have been making watches for Navy SEALs and various military airmen for 25 years..." What EXACTLY does this mean??? Do Luminox have a government contract and their watches are engraved with a NSN number? Does it mean every graduate of BUDs is issued a Luminox watch as standard gear???...and if so which model??? Does it mean at some point over the last 25 years at least 1 member of the U.S. SEALS has purchased one of these watches with his own, personal money? Does it mean Luminox submitted these watches to a government trial (whether they won the contract or not!)? Does it mean Luminox just painted the word "SEALs" on the watch because they think it will sell? What EXACTLY DO YOU MEAN BY YOUR STATEMENT???
The biggest selling point with luminox are the tritium tubes and to be honest after owning a couple of them, theirs are not that bright. Ball, nite and traser all perform better in my experience and once you take luminox's luminescence out of the equation you are left with a standard quartz watch with a few fancy markings, just my opinion. Come doomsday, I would grab my mudmaster and leave the luminox for the looters.
Well, imagine you are perhaps one of the few people remaining alive left on the planet. You'd need to procreate in order to save human civilization. Sorry to say, but that Casio Royale would hinder you from getting laid and doing so. xD ProTrek/G-STEEL will allow you to save humanity with some dignity!
No solar, so when the battery dies, you are screwed. Those are not super-tough, so they won't work so well after they are broken. A solar square G-shock is the ultimate prepper watch.
Bear . SAS trooper . Broke his back after free fall accident in Africa. Never gave up and did walk again and climbed Ama Dablam ( unclimbable said Edmund Hillary ) . Did loads of Charity Seafaring stuff. Climbed Everest . Now Chief Scout of the boy scouts . No substance . You're a prize twat.
Great review. Personally if I was into Doomsday prepping I’d go for an automatic Marathon GSAR with tritium and for backup I’d go with my old solar Casio Protrek.
The thing about paracord is that it has inner strands that you can remove, so in theory you could gut the cord for your cordage and still have a usable watch strap afterwards. As with most prepper things, that's an extremely overthought thing though.
Already have mine, I don't need distance counting as I have ranger beads. But what I DO need to know in SHTF is the tides and when I can cross rivers or fish. It has solar so good for ten years and if Japan is still alive I can radio sinc up here in Queensland Australia. So I give you the Casio G Shock G-Lide GWX-5700CS with a sunto divers compass. My perfect work tool watch but with a "Plan B" purpose.
I gave the vid the thumbs up, because all your vids deserve a thumbs up! This has to be the worst bang for buck watch you've reviewed though, why would you get this over a GShock etc? And Bear Grills doesn't need a watch to tell the time, he asks his production crew how long before they are due back at the 5 star hotel.....
gmt funtion (for long times in dark areas like caves) rotating compass (aim hr hand @ sun -> gmt points north) lume power reserve 6 months (no battery, it'll die) water resistant 100 M shock absorbing sub $500 Seiko SUN049P2 checks all boxes
I rather have something connected with Ray Mears (or Less Stroud for that matter) instead of Grylls. If I would have to have someones name on the watch.
Love this. I may, or may not, have family who moved to Maine who are survivalists. He wears a Marine type G-Shock, powered by the sun, and has enough armory to fend off a small army. He is a retired Marine who still works for the federal government. Loved the review. I love seeing new brands
Always great content and well presented. Given the looks, I’d probably pick a Casioak over this for a fraction of the price. My Prepper is an AliExpress 40mm Carnival Quartz field watch in black PVD stainless steel with tritium on all 3 hands and all 12 indices for which I paid AU$120
When the SHTF the best way to tell the time will be to simply stick a stick in the ground. It also doubles up as a compass if you know which hemisphere you are in. Powered by solar - if you rub two of them together you can make a fire. Lol
the ultimate doomsdaywatch is, in my opinion the Citizen Promaster Tough BN0211. Solar, antimagnetic, shockproof, titanium coting, a fantastic Lume, 200 meters of water resistance, screwdown crown, saphire crystal for the half of the price of a luminox. or a gshock with solar ;)
I have an 8050 I got my dad. I got the battery changed 1x in 10 years , I don’t know what battery the jeweler put in but unless you have a spare, go Citizen Eco Drive for doomsday. The tritium is nice, good glow at night and visible (not seiko bright, but lasts for years). Seconds hand never hits the mark, has some “wobble” moving too.
If dooms day is caused by a solar flare or some other EMP (electromagnetic pulse) producing devise, most electronic circuits will be made unusable. Mechanical watches will still work and should be in your SHTF bug out kit.
I really think it depends on what you mean by a doomsday watch. For survival, the watch you have here does have a coupleof benefits (a compass, a ruler), but it would be better to have such things *plus* solar power. For actual survival, I think a Swiss army knife would do you better than any watch could. The compass could help you know your way around, but you're going to be able to cut, to start a fire, etc.
Hi, Jody! Have you ever seen watches sold by a company called 'Steeldive'? I bought one out of impulse on Aliexpress about a week ago, and I'm really impressed with the overall quality. I bought their SKX homage for around £90, and it has a Seiko NH35a, sapphire crystal with AR coating, a fully lumed ceramic bezel insert and a load of C3 lume on the indices and hands. Out of the box, It's running at +1 second a day, which is really surprising. The stock bracelet is average, but the watch itself is fantastic for what you pay.
You could buy a g-shock rangeman (the old one) for around 250 to 300 dollars with a more durable design, solar, an altimeter and a barometer along with the compass and thermometer, and radio control A much better deal imo. This is still a cool watch, but for a prepper or a survival situation g-shock rangeman is my go-to!
Luminox does not sell any watches that could be classified as "Doomsday" watches, the two i had both leaked after nothing more than getting dunked pulling fish out of the water and luminox wouldn't warranty the second one. A "doomsday" watch would be Solar ,mechanical or at the very least have a 10yr battery life. casio GWM 5610 comes to mind.
Stick with an automatic or manual wind, they never need a battery. I one today that I bought in the y2k craze, it's running just gaining two minutes in a 5 day period. That's pretty good for a 21 year old with no cleaning.
If you know your average stride length that helps determine those 164 feet. A regular tachymeter (and math) should be able to tell you the same thing. Around 8:10
So where do you get a replacement battery for your apocalypse watch when it dies? Oh, right...G-Shock Tough Solar GWM5610 for me Jody. And as long as those atomic clocks keep ticking, I’ll always have the correct time.
This was an interesting review though I can't help but wonder if the Marathon Navigator or General Purpose watches might represent better value. They also use a Swiss ETA quartz movement, have tritium hands and markers, and can be had with either a sapphire or hesalite crystal for around the US$200 mark (though they're not chronographs). You can even add a compass!
I personally think that if you’re going to buy a doomsday prepping watch one of the main boxes you would need to tick off is that it has to be solar powered that way you would not have to worry about batteries
First I think most preppers would just laugh at the notion of getting anything associated with Bear Grylls. As others have said if you want something realistic for what a prepper would have it would be the G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400 and yes they might even add a backup compass onto the strap like the clamshell compass from Wazoo Survival.
it doesn't have solar and at that price i would expect better feeling quality. I'd say a MUCH better option is a Casio pro-trek solar and a Tissot T touch solar. You get a lot of survivalist friendly features including an accurate compass with that. And they feel much more luxurious at that price, specially the Tissot.
Ditto on expecting a SHTF watch needing to be solar. I'd choose a GWG-1000 instead. And they could have gone with more robust tritium tubes. Overall a handsome piece although I'd skip all the Bear Grylls folderol. Good review mate!
Not so sure, I'd probably go with my Casio ProTrek PRW-6000SC-7D. Atleast it solarcharges and has a built-in electronic magnetic compass readout, barometer, temperature gauge etc.
This would not be my first choice running out the door in an apocalypse. It’s gotta be a good solar powered brand. Having given this topic much thought, especially in the current state of the world; pandemic, climate change, crazy world leaders, etc. I eventually went with the Casio solar Night Safari, which has a built in digital compass, barometer, etc., and a solar battery with a 10 month power reserve, 100m water resistance with screw down crown and case back, and backlight, good lime, and a lumed rubber strap back!
Nice to see some good press from Luminox. They’re a great company with excellent customer service. The additional compass I could do without, but a strap change is an easy fix.
As always I enjoy your videos. Shouldn't a Doomsday prepper watch by definition be an auto as an EMP pulse likely in a doomsday scenario would make the quartz watch unusable.
Nice watch but I think the only survival factor this watch will be used for the survival on the dance floor. It's expensive for what it offers. I think this is tactical "style" the cargo zip off pants of watches.
I’ve owned a Luminox for about ten plus years and changed the battery once. I’ve used this as my beater and i have beat the crap out of this watch and still looks good. Not a fan of quartz but for accuracy and as a tool you can’t do much better, in my opinion? The tritium stills looks good, not like c3 but it’s tritium.
A good watch BUT battery life is poor. Should be solar powered. Give me a Citizen PROMASTER ALTICHRON any day at a fraction of the cost. I have several Citizen ecodrive watches including one that I purchased in 1997. Still going strong.
You'll still need a solar G-Shock on hand to accurately set the time when changing the battery. So may as well just have a G-Shock. And is it me, or was the lume non-existent?
I cannot get used to this kind of busy dials...Nice watch; but... this price ... Great edition at the begining of the vídeo!.Very funny! Your channel is getting better and better! "Never give up " reviewing watches! Lol..
Its a nice watch review for a good looking watch with few options. But as stated before, any "doomsday" watch need to be solar with a compass. GW-9400 Rangeman is the best candidate considering its price. Maybe you should make another video of top 5-10 dooms day watches? Sure that video might quickly turn into top 5-10 Casio video ;)
