Potassium is up there, as one of the most important minerals that your body needs, because of the amount of roles potassium takes on in your body to essentially regulate your muscle contractions, maintain healthy nerve function, and regulate the fluid balance in and out of your body.
What causes low potassium?
Malnutrition or diuretic therapy is a good starting point for a potential cause, lets say if you're on a water pill and your constantly flushing out potassium and other electrolytes. Other big factors that cause low potassium are from vomiting, chronic diarrhea, having a magnesium deficiency which will cause a potassium deficiency as the two are related, having an eating disorder such as bulimia nervosa, alcoholism, excessive sweating, chronic kidney disease, as well as some of medicines that can cause low potassium which the typical ones being: insulin, and medicines classified as water pills which can affect your lab readings when your potassium is being tested because certain medications shift potassium in and out of your cells which does have an impact on how your levels will read out on paper.
Mild potassium deficiency symptoms
Mild as you can see, is anything from 3 - 3.5, and we have here that it says asymptomatic, which means you wont see any symptoms with mildly low potassium in the body. But If I were to go with what could potentially arise, it would be the feeling of being tired more often than not, and not having that same energy to walk a flight of stairs that you used to or if you notice that your regular routine work that you would do such as walking your dog, all of a sudden feels a lot more tiring. It could be a sign of low potassium, but keep in mind that its not definitive. And that goes for both physical and mental tiredness and fatigue. So the feeling of unexplained fatigue, would be mild in my opinion.
Moderate potassium deficiency signs
Moderate is anything from 2.5 to 3. And we see here that we get, cramping, weakness, malaise which is basically general discomfort, and myalgia which is basically muscle pain. Which tends to be a big complaint with low potassium and happens essentially because potassium helps relay signals from your brain to stimulate contractions right, and when your low, your brain cant relay these signals as effectively, causing a lagged contraction, which in turn causes those cramps in the first place.
Severe potassium deficiency signs
As far as the severe signs, severe as you can see: is anything under 2.5, which will cause big changes on the heart monitor that can be detected, as well as arrhythmias, which are irregular heart rhythms that your doctor will see on the ecg, which is treated with iv potassium replacement under your doctors care.

Coconut water right from the coconut will elevate K+ fast. I put a couple of coconuts in the fridge and if I feel like my potassium is low I'll pour the water of one coconut into a glass with ice and feel better almost instantly. Too much will cause hyperkalemia so be careful

I went to the er because i started tingling, shaking, and felt numbness. My potassium was 3.2. I was taking lots of b12 and not really eatting much with potassium.

As a carnivore I get around 1500 mg from food drinks and salt. I supplement the rest to keep afib under control

Don’t think he mentioned hyperaldosteronism ( Conn’s) causing low potassium.. this is rarely tested for so ask your doc to check your aldosterone and renin ratio ( ARR) to check for Conn’s. You may be having high blood pressure because of this . Keep dietary sodium below 1500mg daily. If you ARR is over 20 it indicates Conn’s. Another contributing factor could be an adrenal tumor.

Don't forget: excess salt intake causes potassium to drop as potassium moderates salt levels! In our heavily salted world, this is vital. Also agree with the people saying we're not getting 4700mg daily! We eat a bunch of crap.

Hey sis i was giving a potassium pill by my doctor . She took me off , because she knew it will deplete my potassium. That's what the bp pills do becarefull.

I have been developing hyperhidosis after i went low carb. Also had very poor brain function for a good while . Maybe this is due to low potassium?

That's normal while your body adjusts to it. It will take a few more months to become fully adapted to the diet. Are you low carb or keto (ultra low carb)?
