The foundation of all scalp care is knowing what kind of scalp you have. In this video I'm breaking down the clinical features of the two most common scalp conditions related to sebum production - dry scalp vs. oily scalp. Understanding where you fall on this scale will help you a) avoid other scalp conditions that you may be more prone to because of your scalp type (like dandruff for example) and b) help you figure out what kind of scalp care products and scalp treatments you need (if any). Every other scalp care tip you learn about and wish to implement, will be more effective when you have your scalp type as context.

Seb Derm and (undiagnosed psoriasis) here. After removing 99.99% of oils and butters/ products with oils and butters and products with malassezia encouraging ingredients from my routine, I was able to identify internal causes too. Wheat and milk. For the first time in 10 years I have achieved going weeks without scalp issues multiple times... Whereas, before, washing twice a week would do nothing. It only comes back now when I purposefully eat wheat, and accidentally discover a new food trigger. I think wheat is related to seb derm on my scalp and milk is related to psoriasis or its still seb derm. (I also have lactose intolerance btw). Petroleum jelly, mineral oil, MCT oil, sulphates and silicones are my new best friends and I apply NOTHINF to my scalp after shampooing 2-3 times during my once a week washday.

Wow, I’ve pinned this comment because it’s spot on and I think it will be very helpful for other people who experience similar issues with a dandruff/seb derm. Wheat and dairy (amongst other foods) are common dietary triggers for people who experience scaly scalp conditions. Processed foods is another one (given that they’re so high in trans fats). So things like crisps, baked goods, fried foods, margarine etc. So pleased for you that you’ve managed to identify and eliminate your triggers. It can be tough (and long winded) to pay that much attention so major kudos to you for your patience and commitment. Safe to say you’re reaping the benefits now! 🥰🤗

Commenting to represent for the oily scalp and seb-derm gang 👏👏👏Best self-care habit I got into was committing to twice-weekly washdays. Definitely the odd-man out in natural-hair online spaces, but I cannot stress how much relief I get from removing scalp oil more frequently. I mostly have a handle on my own hair, but as someone who struggled for literal years with insufficient information on oily scalps (at least, info that wasn't aimed at straight hair hurr durr), I'm super excited to see more from this scalp series. Preach, sis 🙌💖

I do the same thing, wash 2xs/wk. You're right definitely not a lot of us out there on YT. I got the idea from Ms. Mississippi. The flakes and excessive shedding are now GONE! All I did was add one extra wash. No special oils, herbs, shampoos, etc. I put nothing on my scalp.

I can't wait for the rest of this series! I have struggled with my scalp and hair for awhile now. I would say the scalp is oily, but the ends get pretty dry. When washing my hair everyday, it would be oily again by that evening or the next day. Now that I've stretched it out, day 3 is the real start of oiliness. I also get flakes, though I would classify them as white and dry, not yellow and thick, and itchiness that starts around day 4. My face in the past has been super oily, though recently it has been drier/more normal. I'm not sure if it's just narrowing down into a good skincare routine or what. And the rest of my body is dry, with eczema on my back, so my body is a whole mess! I really hope I can figure out what my hair needs with series and get it happy!

Great video. I already knew that I was in the oily scalp crew. Usually, by day two, I can massage my scalp and my fingertips are oily. I generally shampoo every 5 days. There is no way I could go even two weeks without shampooing. I always wondered how people could go for a month or more without shampooing. Now it makes sense!💜

I had always assumed that my oily scalp was a genetic gift from my dad (mom is lucky to have a normal scalp) and now I'm learning it's actually from my PCOS and my wonky androgen production. Thank you for clarifying (lol) that for me as any information I find on oily scalps is related to too much shampooing (which to be fair, we do as a society) and nothing about our chemical makeup. And I have tried going every day without washing (but still wetting and using a scalp brush to help with sebum) and only made it to every other day because by the end of day two it'd feel like I dunked my head in a vat of oil. So, I'm washing every day with clarifying shampoo and "clean" ingredients and conditioning with an argan oil-based conditioner on the ends and it's worked pretty good for what I have to work with being basic 1-C hair.

I do have a journal I record all my hair shenanigans. So, on one occasion, I used ORS aloe shampoo and African Pride Honey & Coconut Shampoo. I didn't know both were clarifying so, it threw my scalp off balance and I had to battle it out with Eden Peppermint and As I Am Dry Shampoo however, I still had mad itchy scalp until I read on the beauty brains that Sodium Olefin Sulfonate can be as clarifying as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate! So, I went to buy a mild shampoo (Shea Moisture Mafura) to complement the clarifying ones because I cleanse + condition weekly. Since then, I've noticed a positive change.

YES IVE BEEN WANTING THIS! Thank you so much for giving us free information as an expert. Youre helping so many people! You deserve as much success as comes to you Btw, id love to see a separate video on skin barrier health on the scalp. Theres so little information publicly available and its linked to so many skin conditions, ie seborrheic and atopic dermatitis. So far ive found a few products that have helped me repair my own scalp barrier, namely fragrance free baby shampoo, lightweight leave in conditioners that dont irritate my scalp like kinky curly and treluxe serum, the ordinary peptide serum, sensitive hair and scalp mask from grow gorgeous, and Zeroid rootheal. I know urea has a lot of evidence behind it for skin barrier health, and its formulated in a few eucerin products, which i would love to try. Def check out zeroid and atopalm haircare! Through your cosmetic science education you might have come across Deog Park and MLE and his other creations, which are found in brands under the Atopalm umbrella. If not, check it out! Thank you so much again, you have been a lifesaver to me and so many others.

Id like to also list basically every line of fragrance free haircare ive found so far. Went my scalp sc was destroyed, reducing fragrance really helped avoid excess irritation, and now i can use it with much less problems, but i know many people have to avoid it long term. Here goes: Vanicream - shampoo and conditioner - pyrithione zinc dandruff conditioner - stylers *pretty basic stuff Exederm - shampoo and conditioner *i would avoid it if you have anything besides low porosity and fine hair, shampoo is gentle on skin but drying on hair for my medium porosity hair, conditioner is nice but very lightweight Grow gorgeous sensitive line - hair and scalp mask - shampoo and conditioner - cica scalp serum * i really enjoy the mask, its an overnight pre poo. Smells funky but its the ingredients smell that would normally be covered up by fragrance. Has ceramides, but im assuming not in the proper ratio for the skin barrier, but great for hair. I would love to try the serum, i love cica/centella Curlsmith shine line - stylers - shampoo and conditioner *wide range of stylers, no deep conditioner Kristen ess fragrance free line - stylers suited to straight hair - shampoo and conditioner - deep conditioner * havent tried, mask looks promising and the shampoo and conditioner come in jumbo sizes for very cheap! Zeroid rootheal - shampoo - scalp moisturizer * contains MLE ceramide technology (so freakin cool). Ive only tried the moisturizer. Lightweight, doesnt affect hair even if applied after drying if you apply it well, but i get better distribution with it wet. No irritation whatsoever. If you apply it well your hair is wet it almost feels like its drying it, but thats just the texture from what it seems, no actual effects. Doesnt make me greasy. The shampoo might be a bit stripping for people with natural and curly hair since its a korean brand, but its seems to be gentle Atopalm (same brand umbrella, also MLE) makes one or two shampoos that seem more moisturizing but they do contain fragrance, however atopalm is a brand recommended by south korean derms for sensitive skin. Depends on your own sensitivities The ordinary peptide serum - lightweight serum with hyaluronic acid and peptides, quite nice to use Eucerin - multiple lines: - dandruff - urea - thinning - sensitivity - there may be one other First three lines have their own shampoo and serum. Ive tried the urea serum, basic and hydrating, didnt use it long enough to get the urea effect, but that ingredient is great for skin barrier repair and hydration to anyone reading this! Last line has a shampoo and im not sure if there are other things The Inkey List - 2% salicylic acid scalp treatment - Glycolic acid scalp treatment - hyaluronic acid hair treatment - Vitamin c brightening hair treatment - Caffeine stimulating scalp treatment - Peptide volumizing hair treatment - Amino acid anti-grey treatment - Shea oil hair treatment - Chia seed curl defining treatment - PCA bond repair hair treatment * the hyaluronic and glycolic treatments are probably comparable to regular hyaluronic acid and the ordinary’s 7% glycolic acid toner (same concentrations and many people use it on their hair and scalp). Their products include more actives than theyre names after, ie patented complexes, like youd find in the inkey list’s skincare or in the ordinary. The PCA treatment is the only fragrance free product ive seen advertised for bond repair. Note: i cant guarantee all of these are fragrance free, but from the ingredient lists i have read and the from the lack of fragrance in the brand overall, i think its safe, but make sure to check! SEEN haircare (fragrance free) - shampoo and conditioner - deep conditioner - blow dry cream - curl cream - shine serum * deep conditioner isnt substantial enough for me but the curl cream is too heavy, many people with curly hair like the blow out cream. Conditioner is basic. Shampoo, conditioner, and deep conditioner come in jumbos! Devcurl fragrance free - one conditions - no poo - low poo - stylers Noughty soothe line, fragrance free versions - shampoo and conditioner - mask * i can only find the fragrance free versions in the UK. Contains oat and bisabolol Briogeo be gentle + be kind - shampoo and conditioner - detangler LUS fragrance free versions - cleansers - conditioners (not deep conditioner) - stylers Neutrogen - T/Sal * 3% salicylic acid for seb derm, psoriasis Not as harsh as youd think, and an effective formulation. Clean but non stripping. Fragfree - shampoo, conditioner - possibly a treatment i dont remember - stylers, including gels with different levels of hold * ive tried the hard hold gel. Basic, does the job Simple skincare - shampoo, conditioner Odele - shampoo and conditioner Pantene - shampoo and conditioner HiBar - shampoo and conditioner bars * i have seen another shampoo bar out there, don’t remember it. I think it was oat based. Baby products - cerave baby wash * contains ceramides that arent in the rught ratio with cholesterol and fatty acids for skin barrier repair, but in my experience there is a noticeable affect on hair strength. Gentle and moisturizing. May have a faint residue but i dont notice it after drying and plays well with conditioners - happy cappy pyrithione zinc shampoo * a bit drying on my medium porosity and chronically dry hair, .95% pyrithione zinc -there are many, many fragrance free baby shampoos Conditioners: - babo botanicals fragrance free conditioner - honest baby fragrance free conditioner - I think pipette has one House brands wirh fragrance free lines: - whole foots - boots Non-hair items or not specifically hair - la roche posay lipikar cleanser * contains sles but very gentle and non irritating, made for exemic skin - the ordinary marine hyaluronics * amino acid and humectant essence, very thin and lightweight - cosrx propolis essence * my hair really likes this stuff - squalane oil * safe for seborrheic dermatitis Plenty of skin serums are fragrance free and should be good for the scalp as long as your skin agrees with the ingredients. Many people love niacinamide which is very popular, and its been shown to improve the skin barrier and i think Afope featured it in her thin hair video? However in her last video, she did recommend letting your scalp re-regulate itself, but well see what advice she gives us in the future. - A very popular skincare item for haircare is the ordinary’s 7% glycolic acid toner. Glycolic acid and other AHAS and actually very common in haircare products, and using a product like this with a low ph helps seal the cuticle. Glycolic acid doesnt just exfoliate, its a humectant, too. Lactic acid is an even better one and is gentler.

I didn't realize my scalp was oily cuz unlike people with thin hair whose hair would get very greasy, mine didn't. So I didn't feel I needed to wash my hair often. But then when I scratched my scalp a bit I had so much thick oily gunk under my nails and realized it was just built-up sebum. Though I haven't found a shampoo that's right for me; I know I need to wash more often but not dry out my hair.

I have a question: Is it possible to have combination scalp, like skin? (Lol, hear me out) So when I was a child, I suffered from Alopecia. Maybe it was because my mom didn’t know how to cater to my hair. My scalp issues was also prior to trauma from relaxers which I got when I was a little older & into my late teens. I started my natural hair journey about a decade ago and only recently (say half of that) I have educated myself on my hair needs. At one point my scalp was so dry I felt the inflammation, flaking & tearing like it might just bleed so that became a big focus for me. With the right care I can say now, I don’t have those problems. My scalp occasionally can get dry if I fail to manage it properly; however now, I can feel the production of sebum when I touch my roots. Looking forward to hearing your feedback. ^__^

Thank You, great video as always. Since I began my hair journey almost 3 years ago I got hit with massive dandruff in chunks which made me believe it was my dry scalp when in fact I had an oily one, until the doctor told me I had dermatitis. This helped me pay more attention to my scalp even if it wasn't easy looking dusty 3 days after wash day. I use Jojoba oil with a blend of essential oils now, it helps strech my wasday every 2 weeks but I still feel I can do better and that I haven't found the ''miracle'' solution, looking foward to the next videos

This is actually more common than you think. Many people think just because they have flakes on their scalp it’s because it’s dry - but it could equally be because it’s oily. Happy you’ve found a solution that’s currently working for you, and I hope the other videos in this series can help you supercharge your scalp care even more ☺️

Funnily enough I was thinking about this. I think my scalp is oily, it has never been dry. My face gets horribly oily, by the end of the day it looks like someone has thrown a glass of oil on my face. Unfortunately my hair is the opposite it's dry.

Afope, can you have a normal scalp and dry skin? My scalp has never bothered me. But my skin is dry. I became plant based back in 2012 and my skin became less dry and flaky. As a matter of fact, when I put bread back into life , my skin becomes dry and flaky and the moment I remove it, about a week to 10 days later my skin is happy again. Sometimes I miss bread and 'punish' myself 😛😛 During that whole 'bread' moment, my scalp has nothing to say... It is Winter here in Winnipeg 🇨🇦 so my skin does get dry and my scalp wants more moisture and oils but my scalp does not shower me in flakiness because it is dry/drier here.

@AfopeAtoyebi
@AfopeAtoyebi 2 года назад
You sure can. To be honest, though, I think it's less so about having a combination and more about changes in reaction to certain things like changes in weather or products etc. Also the top of the head and frontal hairline are naturally more "oily" than other parts of the head anyway so it's rarely ever the exact same everywhere on one scalp.

Hi, I am still confused after watching this video. While watching oily scalp part of the video I thought, yeahhhh I have oily scalp. But then, when I am watching the dry scalp part of the video I realised I get white dandruff(or flakes) but never yellow/coloured, so is my hair/scalp oily or dry? Even my skin feels oily and sweaty sometimes and so much dry sometimes. I get acne on my face often. Could you please comment on this

I still don’t know what my scalp is. I went to the body shop to buy shampoo cuz my hair doesn’t like most stuff I’m the stores like a day after washing, it’ll be oily and itchy again. I used to like this type from Avon but they don’t have it anymore and their prices went up. The lady at body shop assumed I have a dry scalp so suggested cinnamon or shar shampoo. So I bought cinnamon. And for the first couple weeks it was fine…but now a day after washing my hair is feeling really oily again and not itchy though. Like I always thought my scalp is oily but this lady doesn’t think so. Should I try tea tree for oily scalps?

I definitely have a sensitive scalp. My scalp used to itch and my edges used to feel tender until I switched to all fragrance free also gentle sulfate free cleansers-this even helped with hair loss! I think I have normal oil production though.

Hiya! I’m not currently taking on new clients 🥺 so that explains why you haven’t been able to book. I’m working on some other research stuff at the minute so don’t have the capacity to consult as well. I’ve got a link to a global directory of trichologists that you can book with in the description box of every video - I think that will be helpful for you. If you’re in London and prefer a black trichologists I’ve got a couple close colleagues that I would highly recommend - Ebuni Ajiduah & Stephany Sey are my girls and fantastic at what they do.

Sounds like something to cover in the sensitive scalp video! This is exactly what I was explaining about sensitive scalps at the end of the video - regardless of whether you have a dry, oily, or normal scalp, you can be susceptible being sensitised to certain ingredients that could then cause your scalp to (re)act differently.

@@AfopeAtoyebi I'll share with pleasure. Before the pandemic, my scalp was a mess until my dermatologist prescribed two things: Ketoconazole shampoo-which strips everything off the scalp and hair; and Fluocinonide ointment. The shampoo only took two wash days and my scalp thanked me. The day after my wash day is when I apply the ointment to this day.
