We received communication after the release of the TurboDirect S.A High HP upgrade plans for 2020 video on the 27 Jan 2020 -- we touched on a sensitive subject where there is a common turbocharger failure in the hybrid turbochargers built for the IS38. We were asked to explain more about our video and to go into some more depth as to how and why these turbos fail.
We also received some criticism about the video and the fact that we exposed this via youtube. We decided to respond with FACT and go into the failure mechanism and explain in more detail as to the fact that these hybrid upgrades are in fact unreliable to support our first video - something the "nay sayers" didnt expect -
This video is a long one and outlines the fact that these hybrid turbochargers are unreliable - and WILL fail through a thrust bearing failure (axially) when boost pressures exceed 1.7-1.8bar boost.
Make sure to note - IN ORDER TO REACH THE ADVERTISED HP OF THESE HYBRIDS (500HP + - ) YOU NEED TO RUN HIGHER BOOST THAT 1.8-2.0BAR - TO THE DETRIMENT OF THE BEARING SYSTEM.
Hybrid designs for this specific turbocharger will remain reliable provided boost pressures are not pushed past 1.5-1.6bar boost MAXIMUM with enlarged rotating assemblies - with a maximum size exducer rotating assembly of around 62-66mm -- more than this, you are on borrowed time.
