Isolation Cabinet Iso Box for Recording Amps
Here is a video on my guitar isolation box or iso box I get a lot of question on. Below is the link to my website where I list the basic components of the box and what all to expect when building yours.
Here is a link to my website where I detail a bit more.

Cool video, but I think it'd be good to also hear a recording a) as recorded by the mic in the box, as compared to b) recorded by a mic outside of the box, and c) edited within a raw and/or final mix. Because ultimately, I think the 2 main reasons for an iso-box are a) to lower the volume to avoid issues with other people and b) to record a guitar in such a setting to be used in some kind of final product.

Cool vid dude! I built one for my band's 2nd album and it worked great! I built ours a 4x12 size and the things was massive. It worked great as we got a super tight sound from it but we decided to take it apart (I built it so it could be easily assembled and reassembled). It just took up too much room. Similar design though with a hinged top and full foam inside. Makes me wonder just how expensive those Randall ISO cabs really should cost :)

You're prolly getting better isolation than the iPhone app is indicating. You voice level was pretty close to the box when closed. Also, with the lid open, the cab is still projecting into the foam. To get a better measurement, maybe place the phone inside the box. I would have expected at least 145 dBA of raw volume.

I have an old Marshall 1x15" bass cabinet. I've been thinking about converting it into an ISO cab with a high powered 1x12" Celestion. My issue is being able to crank up my 50W Plexi loud enough to get tone out of it at practices and smaller venues. I currently use a ported 1x12 Bogner cube cab with a G12H-75 which has a great compressed tight sound but it's still just a bit too loud for practice/ small venues and it's too directional as well. One idea I had is to reshape the inside of the bass cabinet by building a baffle on the inside of the cab out of birch and mounting a 12" high powered Celestion to it. There are different ways of doing this; 1) mount the speaker at a 45 degree angle inside the cabinet (this might work well in terms of a stage cab) 2) mount the speaker facing upwards 3) mount the speaker facing downwards. The inside of the cab could be chambered as well. All three designs would of course include foam / batting to dampen down the volume. The front baffle and back would be replaced with baltic birch with ports or vents cut in them. The tough part is knowing how to angle the speaker, how to chamber it accordingly and where to cut vents and ports in the front baffle and the back.

Crazy, the acoustic of the electric alone is louder than the 2x12 in the box. Psyched I found this, just bought a bunch of stuff to do this myself. I got drywall too tho, which may be going back

Its answered my question which is will I need to build a box within a box to make it quiet enough and it looks like the answer is no. Apparently leaving a gap between soundproofing is very effective, more effective than having a single thick wall of insulation.

I have seen some built that are box in a box and having that extra air gap makes a huge difference. I think it all depends on how loud you really are and how much you need to cut it. I don't push my amps to oblivion but some do. If you have super high volume may as well go all in and double box it. For me in a situation where I don't want to be in my families face it works perfect. And even better in the room I record in I dont hear it so I can just trust my monitors.

Same with me im not looking to max out the volume im just tired of hovering around volume 1 all the time on the brink of cutting out. As for the boxy sound you get I think its too subtle to be an issue and in my experience with testing I found a little carefully adjusted room reverb in post effects is enough to give it a little more ambiance you get from a real room and you would never know, how many times do you hear a tune and say "that was recorded in a box"?

Looks good man. I was wondering, if the box was much bigger would it be less likely to sound ‘boxy’
@GearZombie
@GearZombie 5 лет назад
I don't think so, I think that really the boxy sound comes from not having a room mic. And honestly the close micing sounds basically the same as if you had it in a room. If the box was bigger you'd still have it foamed and enclosed pretty much creating the same effect.

Here's another idea. Take a 4x12 slant cab and remove all 4 speakers. From the inside of the cabinet, partially cover the TOP of the two bottom speaker holes with thick plywood. You can either leave the top two fully open, or partially cover the BOTTOM of those two speaker holes. Then mount either one high powered 12" speaker (e.g. creamback celestion) or two lower powered 12" speakers (i.e. G12H 30's) inside the cabinet and sound insulate the entire cab. The 12" speaker(s) could either be mounted at a tilted 45 degree angle pointing in a straight line towards the speaker holes in the top of the cabinet. The other way to mount the speaker(s) would be to point them straight up which would lower the overall volume the cabinet puts out. By mounting the speakers at a 45 degree angle, the sound would beam straight towards your head instead of the audience. The partial opening in the bottom would mimic an open back cabinet. Don't have the money right now to buy a 4x12 cab to experiment but once I do I'll post the results.

What if you had the cab off the bottom of the ISO box? Would that help any of the sound?
@GearZombie
@GearZombie 5 лет назад
You mean volume outside the box? I don't know that it would help much. Since the bottom of the box is foamed it's already killing a lot of the higher and lower frequencies. The general rule is the best thing to stop sound is air. Or a box in a box in this case. I've seen plenty of people that will build a bigger iso box around the smaller and then insulate between the 2 boxes. That would make a huge difference, but in my house i'm far enough away that I don't need that extra layer. If I was in say an apartment/condo or a small house with close pissy neighbors, the box in the box would probably be the solution.
@aaronmarkham4424

GearZombie that’s a good idea, an iso box inside an iso box. The idea of getting off of the floor would be to help kill the low tones vibrations....

How is the clean sounds? Not roomy but i bet its still good
@GearZombie
@GearZombie 6 лет назад
I think the cleans are fantastic. Me personally I prefer having the tightest sound I can get and then adding in room later if I want. But that's from a hard rock perspective. I think room is picked up very little unless you actually mic (without isolation) and pull the mic away from the speaker or dual mic, one close one far.

Does the amp not get too hot while it’s sealed in the box?
@GearZombie
@GearZombie 6 лет назад
No because only the cabinet is in the box the amp is in the other room and the cab doesn't heat up. Sometimes I do put a combo in the box and that will heat up. So I take breaks in frequent intervals to reduce heat.
@aijb
@aijb 6 лет назад
do you have a vent though for the speakers? I'd be concerned about speakers heating up and blowing if there isn't air circulation happening.
@GearZombie
@GearZombie 6 лет назад
No, There is no heat to speak of as the actual power section is not inside the cabinet. If you're pushing a cab to the point you're creating heat it's generally being misused, mismatched ohms or pumping 150 watts into a 30 watt cab. You can open this after hours of recording and the internal temp is the same as external. As there are various commercial isolation cabinets that also are not vented such as the randall isolation box that's literally a 12" speaker mounted in an insulated box with a lid. As a matter of fact i've never seen one commercially vented as that in turn makes the isolation less effective. There is some theory to allowing room to breathe that is however in reference to pressure levels on the mic itself and how that impacts recording. This box I have built however has enough room to prevent sound issues in relation to proximity.
@aijb
@aijb 6 лет назад
I was wondering if you'd be concerned about the speakers heating up from the resistance you'd be creating with them. Without allowing air circulation, your cones would start to create a vacuum at higher volumes and your coils would begin to heat up from the added resistance. That seriously reduces the life of the speakers.
@GearZombie
@GearZombie 6 лет назад
No, in order to create the type of situation you're talking about you would need a true vacuum. The is plenty of air in that box for speakers to flex. And honestly, in order to put mic's and mic stands and such in there, you're always going to have space. Even in the much smaller iso boxes that have speakers mounted in them like the Randall Iso Box this is a non issue. Take for example, Jim Root. During my Guitar Edge days we talked with him when he was with Stone Sour and he used Randall Iso Boxes live for years. They're actually quite common for touring acts. Long story short, if Slipknot can play a few times a week for hours under those pressures and not burn out speakers you're probably gonna be ok. I built this ISO box probably 7-8 years ago and that 2x12 has a pile of hours on it. I still use it because it still sounds fantastic.

Why not sound proof the room so you can beat your drums and play the geetar? I'm a fan of feedback, so this is a no go.
@GearZombie
@GearZombie 6 лет назад
So a couple things first soundproof the room. For most everyone this isn't an option not true soundproofing anyway. If you have any knowledge of what it takes to actually soundproof a room for the majority of people it's not practical, or even doable. For example this is in my old house and the ceilings are fairly low. To really soundproof you basically need to build a room in a room. By the time I did this I would lose a lot of space, you would also need doors that are made for this application, not a run to home depot type of door and lets not forget how to climate control that space if I use the homes existing hvac I now have drums rumbling through the house again via the hvac duct work. You can slap up some foam and reduce the high end and that's helpful but it's still loud as hell in the house. Second, fan of feedback. I can't imagine tracking in the same room as my sound source, even when I've recorded in professional facilities my gear was in another room. You can still achieve feedback if sound is playing through the studio monitors, it can be done with a modeler as well in the same fashion. So no loss there in my opinion.
@liberty5565
@liberty5565 6 лет назад
GearZombie Like you said, a room in a room. I've been to home studios that weren't sound proof, but were damn quiet outside. You don't need to run duct work, that would defeat the purpose. Leave the door open and close it when recording--and a home depot door can work as they're mostly hollow. Fill with foam insulation (not spray foam), layer with carpet and acoustic panels. Same concept as your iso box, just larger. Just offering my opinion because you seemed upset that you can't play your drums.

for starters, with tube amps you won't get the best quality sound. you won't get your money's worth.
@aijb

Ya, sry dude, but your iphone doesn't tell you anything useful re: noise levels in the room. Has to be calibrated (can be done if the app allows).
@GearZombie
@GearZombie 6 лет назад
Ya... Pretty much said that in the video. Not a scientific test more to give an idea. And... Even with calibration an iPhone doesn't have the hardware to measure reliably because it's well... a phone...
@aijb
@aijb 6 лет назад
You are correct, it would never stand up to even an entry level SLM, but it can definitely give you a ballpark of what your sound levels are at. Without calibration, it may not be giving you an even close reading.
