Thought I'd let you know that I built the same cab but I built mine upright so I could put it in a closet. I put my Rivera Silent Sister inside of it and I am very happy with the results. I can play my Victory VX100 Super Kraken through it mic'd with a SM57 and Sennheiser MD421ii with the gain and volume cranked and listen through my studio monitors. It's really a dream come true. I was never happy with the sound of any IRs. Now I get that studio quality guitar tone at any volume.

I thought you were just talking game in the first video. After all, who talks all about an iso cab but doesn't even demo the sound? So I was stoked to hear it in this video and kinda blown away by how quiet it was. Great work, dude!

Colt, you are one smart guy! SMH about the time you were explaining green glue, and suspending the inner cab is brilliant! This is a super impressive design and the fact that I can hear your strings and pick noise over the iso cab says it all. Learning stuff all the time over here, thanks! 👍🏼

Your video from about a year ago gave me the blueprint for the cab that I built. I use the same mics ( PERFECT ) but I use a 2-12 cabinet suspended like you have done. I am blessed to have my own house and the ONLY way to get this thing in and out is through the sliding door that goes to my patio because this bad mo-fo is 45 inches wide!!! BTW..it weighs about 700 pounds !! Thanks bro!!! Home studios RULE!!!!

About 20-ish years ago, when all my friends were buying their first cars, I went for a "Diezel VH4S" and a fitting Diezel 4x12" stereo-cabinet (yes, you read it right .. the amp-head is stereo and needs 2 of everything, that comes after it, which is why I needed a stereo-cabinet, which has 2 inputs .. it's pretty much two 2x12"-cabs rolled into one 4x12"-cab). What can I say? I was in a metal-band, we were touring, we seemed to go somewhere and we were planning to hit the studio, soon. It seemed to be the perfect time, to go all in. Now, that my amp is in my tiny living-room-studio in my one-bedroom-apartment, sadly, building two of your gorgeous iso-cabs isn't an option for me. I would have done it, though, if I had the space. I'm aching to get to play my beloved amp, again .. and my heart bleeds, when I see it just sitting there, collecting dust. But I've heard about "load-boxes" and am not sure, if I understand those, correctly. My intended signal-flow is: Guitar --> Diezel VH4S --> Each channel (left and right, since the amp is stereo) connected to a load-box --> Connected to 2 XLR-inputs of my Audio-Interface (IR-Cabsim-Plugin in the DAW). Notice: I want to completely replace my 4x12" guitar-cabinet by 2 load-boxes .. or a 2-channel load-box, if such a thing exists (hints to good gear of that sort would be very welcome). So I've recently looked at product-descriptions of load-boxes and a lot of them explicitly say: "You still have to connect the load-box to a real speaker-cabinet to take the load". But none of the product-descriptions explicitly say: "This will completely replace your guitar-cabinet". So now, I'm not sure .. Do loadboxes - as I imagine them - exist, at all? Or did I misunderstand something?

Awesome cab....... I built a drum booth the same way (kinda) .... Instead of bungee cords I put a layer of conveyer belt on the concrete floor then another inside to iso the inner cube. So basically it was suspended in the room on 2 rubber layers. It worked really well. Everyone that ever recorded at my place was impressed. I hope to build another one some soon at my new place. Now I have about 6 times the area to work with ... over 1800 sq ft :)

Plywood box/lid and inside: Layer/sandwich FOAMULAR NGX with a layer of thick wool berber carpet and more FOAMULAR NGX. Thats what I'm going to try. I think the thick berber will dampen any vibration leaving air in the layering. Going to build one this Summer to see if it works 2024

Isn't your studio on the second floor? Do you have video of you moving it up there? 😁 Thanks for putting this information out there, I would absolutely think nothing of it if I came to your studio and used it. It looks pro, but even if it didn't, sounds killer. I'm hardly a "musician" at my talent level, but if most modern musicians would listen with their EARS rather than their EYES, imagine how much MORE great music there would be.

This is awesome. Love the design. only thing I'd have to figure out how to incorporate would be how to accommodate combo amps as opposed to a dedicated speaker into a build.
@cardbored_
@cardbored_ 3 года назад
Just run a cable from the combo head to the iso cab?
@rickmartin7674
@rickmartin7674 3 года назад
Totally possible, but with limitations. I expect a similar build would work, but you'd need to take into account the fact that combo amps are most often open-back, which uses the room to enhance bass response. If you're ok with losing that, the first option would be to build the "receiver" half of the inner box (the part with the mics in it) to be size-matched to the front of the combo so it can be clamped or strapped onto the front of the combo and acoustically sealed (rubber edge seals would help, and they'd need to mate against the solid frame of the combo), and then build the outer box big enough to accommodate that. You'd then need to suspend that assembly inside the outer box. If you're not cool with screwing eye bolts into your combo amp, then straps come to mind: suspended them between the rubber mounts in Colt's box to make a "hammock" sort of setup that would then cradle the inner assembly. This is the design I'm building right now, but with a closed-back 1x12. After all this though, you'd still have the sound coming out of the back of an open-back combo though into the outer box, so you wouldn't have as much sound isolation. To keep the open-back combo design working as intended using the sound from the back of the combo, you'd need to basically imagine the box as a small room and build it accordingly - and you'd still lose the inner-box-outer-box physical isolation that you get with Colt's design. To get past that, you'd have to build yet another box to enclose everything and it would likely be very large.

Modellers always make a big deal about how different speaker cabinets sound different. What speaker cabinet (Marshall 4x12, Orange, open vs closed back etc...) do you think your isocab sounds like? Hope my question makes sense! Love your videos dude!

Also the iso cab only gives close mic’d sounds. What if you want a blend of close and room mic? What if you had another mic in between the two boxes so it’s a bit further away from the speaker? Or what if the iso box was a lot longer , like two or three times long with a mic right at the end far away from the speaker Or even just lifting the first lid slightly or a lot ? 🤔 hmmm

A mic between the 2 boxes would hear a muffled sound. The monitor trick described by nimrodian will get you some interesting sounds though and if the monitors are loud and you're playing close enough, this will still allow you to get some cool feedback.
