Reminds me of a story I wrote a few years ago, where magic could only be done through artifacts, and not cast on command. Basically, instead of flinging a fireball, you needed an artifact that could do that, and then usually provide the energy, but some artifacts had their own energy source. Anyway, some thief had an eyeglass that could detect life forces, but because it showed him everyone as a blob, he wanted to get a more precise one so he could see where they were looking, among other things, and eventually he got to an enchanter who took his "Make it as precise as you can" as a challenge and discovered microbes. Maybe I'll revisit that setting some day.

@@sophiachalloner8951 A requirement for creating artifacts is mana, which only occurred naturally in unicorns (shy and elusive) and dragons (avoid), so most enchanters used something called a Dragon's Heart. It's an artifact that converts heat into mana, and despite the name, can be made from any animal's heart, although they turn to dust after some time. Most people use the hearts of rats for that, since the abundance of rats offsets the fact that they only last about 4 weeks. There is a desert town with a large metal cage in the center, which is full of Dragon's Hearts, and with metal bars running through all the major streets, which is home to a lot of enchanters. Not two hours away, the sand sometimes melts from the heat, but the town is quite tolerable, due to the artifacts draining most of the heat.

This for real helps, I messaged my friends one night like a year ago and was like hey it's 3 am and either I'ma go outside and eat my cereal while crying then come back in, or my mothers gonna be asking y'all if you've heard from me in the morning cuz I might just wander off after I'm done eating. I came back inside and was feeling much better an hour later. Just sat on the driveway, ate some capn crunch, and looked at the stars while enjoying the breeze. 10 out of 10 would recommend.
