The Impact of Animal Rights Activists on Dog Training Methods
Welcome to today's podcast episode! If you're new here, we're glad to have you, and if you're a returning listener, welcome back! Today, we're diving into a crucial and often contentious topic: the impact of animal rights activists on dog training methods, specifically focusing on the push to ban certain training tools and techniques such as pinch collars, e-collars, and protection sports.
Understanding the Controversy
There has been significant debate surrounding the use of tools like pinch collars and e-collars in dog training. Prominent figures like Balabanov and Cabal have voiced their opinions, yet many seem to miss the core issue. This discussion isn't merely about whether these tools are effective or humane; it's about the broader implications for freedom and personal choice in dog training.
The Misunderstanding
Many argue for or against specific training methods based on their validity or ethical concerns. For instance, defending the use of e-collars by explaining their benefits inadvertently empowers governing bodies to regulate these methods. The core issue, however, is not whether these methods are good or bad, but whether the government should have the power to dictate how we train our dogs.
The Slippery Slope
Animal rights activists often advocate for stringent regulations, gradually making it harder to train and keep dogs. These steps, aimed at protecting animals, can sometimes lead to overreach, such as banning specific training tools or methods. The ultimate goal, as stated by some activists, is to eliminate animal ownership altogether. This extreme stance poses a significant threat to our freedom and autonomy as dog owners.
The Importance of Liberty and Freedom
The United States has long been a beacon of freedom, and this extends to the way we choose to train our dogs. The right to use tools like e-collars or pinch collars should be a personal choice, not dictated by government regulations influenced by activist pressure.
The Role of Animal Rights Activists
While the intention behind animal rights activism is often noble, it's crucial to recognize the potential for overreach. Activists pushing for bans on certain training methods may inadvertently limit our freedoms. For example, in some countries, there's been a push to ban protection sports that have been practiced for decades. This move not only affects trainers but also undermines the rich history and cultural significance of these activities.
Defining Cruelty
One of the most contentious aspects of this debate is the definition of cruelty. What one person considers cruel might not be perceived the same way by another. This subjectivity makes it difficult to establish clear, fair regulations. It's essential to have a rational and well-defined understanding of cruelty before making sweeping decisions that impact the entire dog training community.
The Bigger Picture
At the heart of this issue is the need to maintain our liberties. Defending our training methods based on their validity often misses the point. The real fight is about preserving our right to choose how we train our dogs without undue interference. We must advocate for the freedom to train our dogs in the ways we believe are best, based on our knowledge, experience, and the needs of our dogs.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the debate over dog training methods is about more than just the tools we use. It's about protecting our freedoms and ensuring that we, as responsible dog owners and trainers, have the autonomy to make the best choices for our dogs. Let's focus on advocating for our rights and educating others about the importance of personal choice in dog training.

This is a topic that irritates me too! I have a working line German shepherd female and she has required training methods that positive only trainers would lose their mind over. She starts protection training next week and it's the best thing for her. So many people have opinions about it and say it's cruel but for her it's in her DNA to protect and the obedience side of it is what she needs and the fun sport side too. Thank you Hans for your input and technique ❤

Keep speaking on this, Hans. Very important topic right now. I never thought in my lifetime we would be having issues like we are having. Also, thank you for preparing me for the accusation of cruelty with the response of, “Define cruelty.” I think that is spot on.

Exactly right. All you do is further empower the government to tell you what you can and can’t do. Why do we need all these extra laws. Most tools can he misused so it’s not the tool or methodology. Everyone needs to hear this and get on this. This is just another example to the bigger overall problem we have.

The problem with these kind of people is they will never be satisfied. They need to keep themselves relevant so as soon as you give in on one point they just move on to the next issue and so on. The worst part is they don't want to face the consequences of their stupid regulations. They would rather put a dog down than admit their metods don't work. How is that what's best for the dog hypocrites!

I would give 100 thumbs up if I could. This topic mirrors all other "government control" topics. It's not about gun control, or pollution control, or green energy, etc. It's about people control, period. Unfortunately there are enough useful idiots around that will do the governments bidding. History tells us though, that these useful idiots are in for a rude awakening.

Here's the problem in Germany for IGP sports. The top guys do it in secret. OK, but then it appears that you get the same result without the things they banned, so you then have proven their point - not using those things and method they banned seemingly gives equal results.

It's the same political playbook used by dictators. They loosely go after violation in the beginning to give off the false sense of security for the opposition. It's to turn down the heat, since they know too well, there are too many people who are happy enough with their own "illegal/cheating" achievement even when they're legally giving up their right. Then slowly, the dictator cook the frog now that the frog ensnared in the false security. Turning Schutzhund into a for glory sports back then was one of the first step toward schutzhund we see now. All the name changes had their purpose behind. It's no longer a breed test, where people understand and focus on the function of the German Shepherd dogs, and the right the owner has over a dog with that ability. It's not about ego, trophy which can blind side people into accepting dictator dominance over their lives.

They've been coming for service dogs for decades, and sadly they've already divided the service dog community exactly the way you're describing. Do not let them divide you. It is to the point in the service dog community that you can no longer trust even your best friends. Those trainers we are supposed to look to for support, will turn on us in a heartbeat if we so much as use the wrong tool or raise our voice at our dog. The animal rights groups have also convinced some members of our community that service dogs need to be trained to an impossible standard or be deemed "fake". They will do this to your community as well. Do not think for one second that they will not use physical violence against dog trainers. I have witnessed it first hand, and have been the victim of it. Please look out for each other and for yourselves.

Dog training community is never united ing the first place. Breed standard is ever slightly changing bit by bit dictated by external influence. The real issue is they are turning the whole society against pet ownership and specifically dog ownership. They don't want the people to own anything. Their vision is that same old playbook that they keep privilege for government officers. You want to train dogs? Become a dog loyal to the government then you can become security, patrol officer, police, or army officer; then you can train dog however you can to get the job done without anyone questioning the morality of the method and tools.

@@angelinacamacho8575 Not necessarily haters. Many people are just looking for exotic look different than the boring we know. So like it or not, people just want to ever pushing the boundaries this slightly but surely change the standard. It happens both in show and in sports. So all in all, dog owners, dog trainers are never that united.
@lukeryuzaki2328
@lukeryuzaki2328 21 день назад
@@angelinacamacho8575 The issue is when it's a popularity contest, then external influence become too much. For example, vet who can't train dogs becoming authority on canine behavior, psychology. What we end up with when these kind of people become authority is the confusion between animal and human. Vets are against raw feeding for dog, but ready to throw in all kind of grain, vegetable into dog diet. Painting dog to be emotional complex similar to human when the reality is not. Dog park designed to take people tax, while creating all sort of confusion for dog thus behavior issue. Vets are the the same ones who coined the BS that all dogs are the same, and urged naive people to adopt random troubled dogs from shelter. Why not finding the best fit to enrich the owner lives instead of adding a burden. Psychiatrists are often so happy to suggest people who struggle mentally to take care of themselves to get a pet via ESA route... What we ended up is we got too many opinions from many incompetent dog owners, who got dictated by questionable authority like the vets. I can go one, but you get the point by now, surely.

@@lukeryuzaki2328 In UK even years ago they went into pet shops and took the customer lists to see who bought antibiotics for their fish without prescriptions and so on. To transport fish from the airport to the store you needed specially fitted and inspected vans. Vets do not know how to treat each species of fish, whether in the food or in the water......they don't even know the species names! In Canada I wanted a dewormer for my very very sensitive exotic fish and the vet required me to bring the fish to him...very risky for the fish... and would need to transport hundreds of gallons of water to pay $25 per pill that $1 should buy..worst of all, he did not recognize the species name. So he knew worse than nothing at all. He knew enough by book reference of meds, to kill everything, had I trusted him. And he was not any exception.

Don't even get me started on Cabral, he does more harm than good in my opinion by unintentionally making all the woke activist types' arguments for them. He says certain breeds are too dangerous to own (except for guys as "tough" and manly as him) as well as making the argument that protection training is dangerous and abusive (again, except when he does it). He seems to want dogs to be nerfed instead of people more responsible.

I don't think you should look at Mr. Cabral as enemy. He does mean well. He's just the mainstream type person. He tries to play and win the game. He is not aware of the layer of the trap. Nobody can be right all the time. So there is time where one shouldn't give their opinion, and taking away the choices of others. If you don't like certain foods at the party, you're free not to pick those foods. But don't go complain so that that food wouldn't be served for those who would like to enjoy them.

Cabral, Is a complete contradiction by his own admissions. Doesn't believe in competition whether its martial arts which he claims to be expert in. Doesn't believe in competition in regards to dog sports but advocates for certain personal friends of his. Completely disregards genetics in regards to APBT and groups dogs with what he deems a certain phenotype to all be the same which is completely absurd. He hasn't really tested working dogs but claims to be expert. Has so called experts on for opinions that sound like stories that are extremely questionable. The best was the "cop" deploying a muzzled dog on EDP with a firearm. Got news for you. That ain't happening with a city, state or federal agency to many liabilities. Secondary officers at risk EDP shoots them or himself. I can't tell you from experience. No supervisor is saying send a muzzled dog. You'd have to be a idiot. Gun versus Dog. Dog dead Secondary officers potentially dead EDP dead lawsuits yes..
