Not traditionally what's talked about on SoT, but Dinosaur Jr's You're Living All Over Me is the fuzziest thing I've ever heard. Throw Black Sabbath, Neil Young, and The Byrds into a blender and there you have it. J Mascis, the main guy in the band, has another band called Witch that is more directly inspired by Sabbath and I'd bet money that Pete would dig them.

Yay, Pete, finally ! A much deserved mention of the mighty Melvins. I`ve been waiting for years. Heavy and influential as hell, and you brought up some of their best albums. Also, Karen, when I think of fuzz, one of the first bands to come to mind is The Black Angels. Excellent picks and excellent show. Keep the Fuzz episodes coming.

Hi Karen - Black Angels! Oh yeah!! One of my favorite post-2000 bands. I love neo-psyche. Two great songs, among many, are River of Blood and Medicine (both on my top 10 song lists in their respective years). Their music puts my head in a very nice place. 😎

Man, I just love this show is so cool. kind of in between music like psych stoner, hard rock I’m really impressed at Pete picking Randy Holden and then I just so happy that you embraced the Melvins. back in 1989 and 90 I was doing light shows with them in San Francisco cause I just love this kind of blue cheer hard fuzz out music continued working with them in between Allman Brothers tours for the next four years. just a classic.

Hi Pete and Karen. I'm not inclined to recommend albums. You guys already have to much to listen to. But if you like fuzzy space rock psych you really should listen to SLIFT - Ummon. It's a bonafide modern classic. The whole album is one fantastic trip. It can be a grower but if you can immerse yourself in it it's really totally awesome. For me at least. One of my all time favorite post 2000 albums. Fuzz on! The last Black Rainbows is one of their best. Great drummer. Have the 2 previous ones on order. Already owned a couple of the older ones. Saw The Black Angels live earlier this year. Good concert. I alsi saw them like 10 years ago in a smaller venue and that is one of my favorite concerts. Don't play them that much anymore. I mostly return to their first three records.

Yall fluffed the fuzz on my dead black heart by talking about my favorite Melvins album, Bullhead And Black Angels! True to their name, taken from The Velvet Underground’s “The Black Angel’s Death Song,” they’ve taken the same dark, brooding elements that The Dream Syndicate initially did in 1982, but focused entirely on droning distortion, with touches of 13th Floor Elevators and Pink Floyd, but adding more recent influences of The Jesus and the Mary Chain’s buzzsaw noise, Loop, The Spacemen 3, and Spiritualized. My fave is their sixth and most recent, the double album Wilderness of Mirrors (2022). Coincidentally they are playing Levitation in Austin this weekend. They started it as Austin Psych Fest in 2008 -- you should come next year! I'm seeing Codeine & Unwound tomorrow, and The Well, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats and High on Fire there on Friday. Black Angels play every year of course, so I saw them last year, along with Slift, King Gizz, Moon Duo, Frankie & the Witch Fingers and Jesus & Mary Chain. Hope Pete gives Truckfighters a chance, they're THE fuzz ambassadors of Sweden.
@NaughtyVampireGod
@NaughtyVampireGod 8 месяцев назад
Yeah. I guess The Jesus and Mary Chain is another great band that doesn't get mentioned much 'round here. Any of their first five albums could be favorite but i'm partial to Automatic (1989) since that's where i came in. A perfect album. (Darklands is very close, though . . )

Can I recommend a UK label Rocket Recordings. I am guessing not a lot of their bands will have come onto your radar, but they have put out some excellent releases. Strangely Prog Magazine Presents Discovering are featuring them this month. I should also say not a lot what they release is the Fuzzy, Stoner type of Psych. They also deal in some experimental verging on brutal heavy psych. From their roster I would really recommend the new Smote album Genog, also the Sabbath influenced Pigs x 7, Teeth of the Sea, Gnoomes, and Utopia Strong. I have seen all these bands this year.

Hi all. Love the channel to death. For existing fans of heavy fuzz-pedal driven music, discovering ‘Population II’ for the first time is a similar feeling to finding cash in a pocket that you’d forgot about. One of life’s victories. The Melvins are a “snow globe” band, in that they operate within their own universe. A band so respected that sometimes Gene Simmons joins them on stage. A band so cool that Shirley Temple’s daughter used to be a member. A band so influential Kurt Cobain could only join as a roadie. A band so good that just their cover versions are worth checking out alone. I had the pleasure of seeing them live back in about 1992. They were SO slow and heavy, I swear they temporarily distorted space-time by creating their own gravitational field. But hey, it’s all relative. Still releasing great albums and EPs. I can’t recommend Melvins enough. Difficult to single out any particular album. All are different, All are the same. Will be checking out Fuzz, The Black Angels, Bison Machine asap. Karen. Thank you for showing the cover art. Much appreciated.

Hi Pete, Hi Karen. You two always have some great selections. Fun to watch you do these episodes, I look forward to them. This music is truly where the underground sound is thriving now. It's awesome to hear you cover it. I would have a few bands to consider reviewing. 1. Paralyzed (they sound like Steppenwolf meets The Doors with fuzz). 2. Maha Sohona (Swedish stoner / doom band). And what I would really love to see you guys do is an episode dedicated to The Re-Stoned (Russian instrumental trio that more than 10 albums in the last 15 years). They are legitimately one of the best instrumental bands on the planet with some solid variety in their fuzz.
@alternativepreacher4516

Very cool episode. Thinking about fuzzy bands that are not stoner or doom, I would say that My Bloody Valentine can be a pretty fuzzy and loud band in their own way (as they are not a metal band at all). It got me some time to enjoy their music but I would say that if their music clicks for you, it's pretty rewarding and unique.

Thanks Pete and Karen, I love this show. Always something new to check out! I'd really like you both to talk about "Nobody's Children - Good Times' ... maybe in a 60's focused episode. The first time I heard that song it blew my mind that it was recorded in the 60's.. or that it even existed on a record at all. It was my entry point into the whole world of US underground 60's rock. It also made me realise at quite a young age that music genres aren't 'invented', they are far more of a natural evolution.

The only fuzziest album I’ve ever owned and listened to would have to be Possessed(not the death metal band)the underground prog metal band from 🇬🇧 West Midlands which recorded an album called Exploration in 1971 which never saw the light of day until 35 years later it was released 2006 by rise above relics(a subsidiary of rise above record)which a mixture of psychedelic,prog metal, and stoner rock.Just want to say that!

Awesome episode! Lots of stuff I love! Fuzz is great! Ty Segall releases a lot of stuff (usually more than an album or two per year) and switches styles often. A lot of his stuff isn't my thing (though always done well) but when he does do I style I like it's always really good. If you like Fuzz his album Slaughterhouse (released under the name The Ty Segall Band) is another one you will like. Garage Punk fans will dig his band G0GGS. Randy Holden just released his second solo album Population III last year I think. I haven't heard it but it got a lot of strong reviews. Blacl Angels are one of the best things going. I'm not even sure which of their albums is my favorite because all six are like four and a half or five stars out of five. They remind me a lot of 13th Floor Elevators without the jug along with Velvet Underground and Spacemen 3. They have a live album coming out for Record Store Day Black Friday. It should be good because they kill live. Obviously I'm a huge Melvins fans. I recommend The Maggot for Metal heads and (A) Senile Animal for fans of Heavy Rock that haven't heard them. Bullhead, Lysol, and Houdini are among my favorite albums of all time. Don't miss the chance to see them live. They still kill it and tour every year. Thank you.
