In Davinci Resolve, some heavy work with fusion clips, Video Noise Reduction and sharpening will show the power constraints. Exports only really stress the encoding capabilities.

The last time I bought a laptop was in 2010. That's how long it last me. Then last year I bought a 14" M1 Max and it's freakin bananas. It burns through my komodo footage with lots of adjustment layers and effects. So amazing. No reason to upgrade.

I'm shocked they haven't made Live Streaming more of a focus. With Thunderbolt and WiFi 6E these machines could easily hook up to some iPhone 15 Pros with Thunderbolt (I HOPE) and become a portable 3 camera portable live streaming studio. At the very least we shouldn't have to use OBS or similar. Whether Final Cut Live or FaceTime Pro, they need to address this market along with the video editing side.

I might have to upgrade to this since i have managed pushing the base m1pro to its limit and crashing the finalcut pro sooo many times editing a simple car reel project.. but with alot of masking/mocha rotoscoping then color grading then grouping clips into compund clip😂. So far i manage to make it work by not doing it too much at once then render it, bring it back to finalcut then continue the next effects😮‍💨or using my laptop for the AE to create the effects

I've got a 13" MacBook Air M1, got it expecting to have issues with it being the baseline option but that's all my budget allowed for but even with that all in all been super impressed with the performance of it! Definitely would like to upgrade to the Pro in the future!

Love it :) and yes the extra power in resolve will be a huge game changer! For me personally, I use film emulation plug-ins like dehancer, as well as noise reduction, which are suuuper heavy, especially when working with red raw or heavier prores 4444 out of arri cameras. That extra 30% will be super noticeable in resolve for color grading!

The M1 Pro is quite disappointing in terms of performance and I'm thinking of upgrading to an M2 Maxed out but I was wondering if the M1 Max would still do the job. @@madupaul 96gb ram and 2tb internal SSD! But other than that all the M2 maxes have the same chip so they’ll pretty much all be the same until you hit your ram limit haha. I often have premiere, resolve, and media encoder open at the same time so the 96gb ram helps with that

Since you asked if anyone has any idea why the difference in performance between the two generation of chips isn't up to expectation according to your test, I would like to put the reason across here. The 16" MacBook has a better termals than the 14" since it's larger. Now your review device is a 14" M2 Max MacBook being compared to your 16" M1 Max. It has been discovered by other reviewers that the 14" MacBook especially those configured with M1 Max chips do perform less than their 16" counterpart. And since this new M2 Max has a higher performance than the M1 Max it does use a bit more power under intensive load hence generate more heat. So the performance gap between the 14" and 16" M2 Max is even more noticeable this year. That's why some people even advice to get the 16" MacBook if you want the M1 Max (or M2 Max in this case). The M1 Pro or M2 Pro doesn't have this issue in the 14" since it's less powerful, and so can be picked if you like it's size. You won't lose performance compared with the 16" M1 Pro or M2 Pro.

I bought a new iPad in November just because of DaVinci. The program arrived shortly before Christmas. It's not quite the same as on a computer, but Speed Editor works OK. I haven't found certain things about the program yet. The previous iPad is 10 years old. I still use it. Apple products work for several years.

Good afternoon my brother. I also have the 14 inch M1 max MacBook Pro. The 14 inch, I have found, is actually the perfect size for me as well. My 16 inch was just too big and cumbersome for me. The 13 inch felt too much like a toy and too small. I would say this one sits right there in the middle just right. It’s perfect for what I do. I should also mention the obvious, it’s powerful. As an M2 max owner, would you recommend me to upgrade at this time? Not that I’ll let my favorite Content creator/RU-vidr influence me to spend all my money on a new MacBook, but I would like to know if you personally think it’s worth the upgrade. Lol.

Nice work Matti. I purchased the M1 Max 8tb 64gb the day they came out. Use it for editing commercials. At home. On airplanes. It's changed everything. Regarding the lack of performance difference with the M2 and FCP, I think it's simply a software issue. I am hoping, as an FCP editor (primarily), Apple is getting ready to make a big release to update FCP, but we'll see. Some think they're about to drop it like Aperture 3. Who knows. Ultimately I am hoping they go to a subscription model for FCP so that we can get more AI features in shot recognition, color grading, subtitling and more.

It's hard to express how mindblowing these computers are. I'm pushing my machine HARD everyday and the fan never kicks on and it just east whatever I throw at it.

@@Oreocycllo Just to give you a little example. I'm running the 14" Macbook Pro M1 Pro 32 GB. Currently I have 891 browsertabs open in 274 windows, a 3,4 GB PSD file open in Photoshop, Apple notes and Evernote running, Spotify playing music in the background, Adobe XD open with two large designs and Visual Studio Code running. Everything connected to a 4K monitor. The computer is dead quiet and it just eats every single task without skipping a beat. And thats on a M1 Pro with only 32 GB of ram. For my load I'd personally upgrade to 64 GB ram on my next upgrade. But I've used this machine for everything from video editing multiple streams of 4K to working on PSDs with hundreds of layers.

I've had an M1 Max MacBook since last year and the only time the fans turned on was when I accidentally spilled coffee all over it. Kept working though! Luckily Apple replaced everything for me so it's basically like I got a brand new laptop after a year of use.

I’m not historically a “Mac Guy” but found the 8GB M1 Air the cheapest way to run Davinci….and it does! I’d like a little more screen real estate, and certainly more inputs/output options (only 2 USB C’s???). But it runs Davinci fine with 4K on my projects. I may look to upgrade to a larger Silicone system in the near future.

@@gabemind None at this point, I believe it would struggle. My needs are pretty simple at present; editing, basic color correction, some key frame motion, and audio adjustment and isolation. My cameras are usually 8-bit (on purpose) and fairly low bit rate, since much of my content requires running long periods unattended (i.e. changing the piston on a chainsaw with 3 cameras running for 3 hours). Not sure how well this little thing would run fusion and complex color correction nodes with noise reduction…. The quote “A man has to know his limits” comes to mind! Lack of connections and screen size are also inconvenient for larger projects. As crazy as it sounds I bought this machine to test Davinci Resolve and using a Mac before investing in a larger system knowing I could use it in the future as a travel system for basic edits once a larger system was purchased. I hope to delve into some Fusion in the future, but presently I strive for clean and simple.

You wont notice much. There have been Tests that editing even in resolve with a single 8k Timeline works fine on a normal m1. Just as on the max. Really heavy plugins such as Time warp are unplayable so far even on an M1 ultra without proxies. So... We are getting there, but not yet. But very Close. The only time i have seen time warp playable was an incomparable machine to any laptop threadripper 128 Gigs, 3090 with 24gb.

Even just upgrading to the M1 pro 14inch base model a year ago blew my mind. I edit 4K 10bit footage in Premiere pro with zero issues. And PREMIERE has never crashed… coming from a speced out i9 MacBook Pro that crashed multiple times a day on premiere. These chips really are revolutionary.

I ended up getting the 16 inch M2 Max 32gb of RAM. I'm a professional graphic designer and video editor...I'm wondering if I should have gone with 64gb of RAM (maybe that's overkill)?

It's been a great work horse for sure. I don't run into many instances where it feels like I'm crawling through projects. Though I can see the benefits of what it would be like to have twice as much ram. I will most definitely be looking at getting 64 for the M3 when they come out. @@1lovisions355

I've been using the free version of Resolve for about a year now. I still consider myself a beginner though as it's incredibly feature packed and will be buying the Studio version as soon as my bank balance allows for it. Get on board now Matti, you wont regret it.

I only use DaVinci. I switched over from Adobe Premiere in 2020 and I haven't looked back. It's much more reliable and faster.

MacBook 16 M2 Max (A2780) Battery consumption in Adobe Can someone confirm or refute results of battery drain speed while rendering in After Effects? My rate is 1% of battery per 1 minute of rendering in High Power energy mode with max display brightness, which shocked me pretty much. Same maxed out performance mode gave me around 3.5 hours working in Blender (not rendering). Battery health: Normal Cycle Count: 20 Does it look familiar to other a2780 owners?

Better ports ??? M2 pro max macs have the most advanced ports on the market, there is no other laptop that can provide 4k240hz by hdmi for exemple.

Apples didn't even mention FCP launching their latest "Pro" chip for their "Pro" laptop. I think the writing is on the wall for FCP. It is going to be cut like Aperture was.
