Sanremo is older than Eurovision and, actually Esc structure is based on it. Sanremo is sacred in Italy. It is THE contest, and singers take part in it to win Sanremo, not to go Eurovision (Sanremo is considered more prestigious). Of course in the last years singers pay more attention to Esc and to its potentiality, especially younger contestants, who are more modern and have a more contemporary vibe. Sanremo requires songs to be strictly in Italian, that is why also in Esc all our songs are in our language (except for a few lines at times). All the best Italian composers, authors, writers, singers want to take part in Sanremo, so the quality is usually very high (well, we did have Elettra Lamborghini this year, but we all make mistakes. Surely entertaing, nobody had twerked on the Sanremo stage before, but clearly not quality enough)

Simply eras changed. The Sanremo Festival is not a Eurovision selection (Sanremo is a lot more important than ESC in Italy) and Italy sends the Sanremo winner to Eurovision. This means that the songs that are sent are made for the Italian audience and not specifically for Eurovision and dramatic ballads were popular back then. From 1997 a lot changed. And a lot of different artists and genres became popular and the combination of new artists and music, Sanremo judges who know about music and good Sanremo entries made us come back pretty well

First of all we have to say that Italy invented Eurovision Song Contest because the Rai's general director proposed a song festival in Europe like Sanremo Italian Song Festival for the union of european peoples. But in all this Years Italy snobbed Eurovision because we have a big festival to promote the italian music in the world.

RIP Mia Martini💔 She passed away only 3 years after her last participation at the age of 47. She suffered from painful fibroids, for which she took prescription medication. On 14 May 1995, her body was found in the apartment in Via Liguria 38 in Cardano al Campo. According to the coroner's report, her death was by cardiac arrest (in her body traces of cocaine were found). Her body was cremated.

Many of those Italian songs from the 50s and 60s were world hits even sung by artists in Hollywod. It's a shame that in those few seconds you listen to these unknown songs are not enough to fully appreciate a song, especially ballads.

1964 was the first victory for a Southern European country and Italy. At the age of 16 years and 92 days, Gigliola Cinquetti became the youngest winner of the contest yet; a record she held until 1986.In the event, she won the most crushing victory in the history of the contest, with a score almost three times that of her nearest rival, a feat extremely unlikely ever to be beaten under the post-1974 scoring system.Winner Italy got 49 points and second UK got only 17 points.

What changed was how the competitors for ESC were selected. At the beginings the audience didn't have any saying in the selection but only some "qualified" experts selected the singer, after the break it is common to send the winner of the Sanremo Festival (if they agree!) and like others well explained in the comments Sanremo Festival is a HUGE thing in Italy where the audience is A LOT more involved reflecting the current miusic scenario in the country unlikely in the past.

If you noticed there is no video of any 1964 competitors except Italy. As with the first ever contest in 1956, no video recording of the actual contest performance was known to survive however, like the 1956 contest, an audio recording does exist. This is said to be as a result of a fire at the studios of Danish broadcaster DR in the 1970s and the fact that none of the other broadcasters recorded the entire show.(Only videos of Cinquetti's Sanremo performance and her Eurovision winning reprise have both appeared on RU-vid.)

In 1974,Italy refused to broadcast the televised contest on the state television channel RAI because the contest coincided with the intense political campaigning for the 1974 Italian referendum on divorce, which was held a month later in May. RAI felt that Gigliola Cinquetti's song, which was entitled "Sì", and repeatedly featured the word "si" (yes),could be accused of being a subliminal message and a form of propaganda to influence the Italian voting public to vote "yes" in the referendum. The song was not played on most Italian state TV and radio stations for over a month.

I've never seen all the italian Eurovision songs, but I can tell you that the dramatic love songs were the must in those years (and the romantic ballads are really famous today) , but not the only kind of italian music. In the last years it's also changed how the Song for Eurovision it's chosen. We also have jazz, a lot of songwriters, different kinds of folk, rock and metal too 🤣

Fai Rumore is already seen as THE song about the Pandemic and what it did to us a social creatures... The isolation, the loss of life, the inevitable change of habits. Even though the lyrics were not about it at all, his performance at the Arena of Verona and despair in the voice will always bring us back to this point in history. I can see it as being part of history classes twenty years from now.

a little clarification ... it is not that in Italy until 97 only the ballads were listened to and after no, in fact ... as you well know the songs from the Eurovision of Italy come from Sanremo. sanremo since its inception until the end of the 90s has always been conducted and directed (apart from a few rare exceptions) by the presendators themselves, who also chose the songs, these presenters (such as Mr. Baudo and Bongiorno) have always given an imprint always very classic at festival, so much so that from the 80s / 90s it was considered an ancient festival and not loved by young people. when these presenters stopped conducting sanremo because the elderly and deceased and sanremo was entrusted to young presenters, new and different genres began to participate in the festival, which existed even before in italy with great success, but which did not participate in sanremo .. .

This was soooo hard - but ended with Mia Martini - the queen herself... but Marco and Mahmood are still on my playlist after all these years -actually many of Mahmood's songs I play regularily - but Mia Martini had an impact on my young self. About the absence RAI has expressed a few times thoughout the years that they are more interested in San Remo and rumors say that they begrundled not winning more times.. espcially in 97 they thought they had the secure winner and was dissapointed. After Il Volo there were fears that Italy would pull a grumpy again - luckilly they didn't. About some of the clips, it's frustrating to hear good songs reduced to the non recognicable parts... 64, 65,70, 72, 83 were not represented well :) But that's minor things... love these vids!

it is quite shallow to say that all italian entries up to 1992 sounded all the same or dramatic. Emilio pericoli's entry entered the charts in over 20 countries, including USA, and was covered by at least 50 foreign singers, it was swingy and a real grower, but you were laughing too much during the video to listen to it. Gigliola Cinquetti entered the charts all over the world with "non ho l'età" and was a song of a young girl in love with a boy she could not date, Domenico Modugno's 1958 entry renewed the idea of pop around the world entering the charts worldwide, Matia bazar also was quite contemporary and you didn't either realize that their vocal skills were absolutely gorgeuos. Riccardo Fogli Entry was an elegant and beautiful schlager song, no wonder that he was quite big internationally. Claudio Villa's entry "Addio Addio" also entered the charts in many countries and was covered by many international artists. Sergio Endrigo's Marianne was a great success in latin countries and also in Uk with the voice of Cliff Richards, Renato rascel's entry "Romantica" became one of the best selling italian songs around the world after "Volare". Hundreds of people sang that song in over 40 languages. Bobby Solo's Se Piangi Se ridi sold something like 6 million singles, two of which in Japan. Betty Curtis 'Al di la" was another huge international success. The version of Emilio pericoli also entered the USA Top Ten back in those days. Alan Sorrenti's entry "non so che darei" was a huge hit at the time in northern europe countries, in Spain, Italy , Germany and Greece and he sang like that way before the disco days of bee Gees. At a certain point you asked. Whid did Italy left eurovision after 1992? Well u also gave the answer humming to songs that we italians don't even remember like "Luca Barbarossa's "Ti scrivo", and completely ignoring melodic masterpieces like Gianni Morandi's "Occhi di ragazza". Saying that all those songs sounded the same without contextualizing the Era in which they were sung is either shallow or at least not correct.

You are fucking right. They were so annoying to react that way without even listening to most songs. Stating the dramatic songs are less interesting than poppy schlager song is the main reason why italy thought it was useless to join esc.

@@daniellepavlovic8487 I wuldn't say that they were so dramatic. Lyrics were often complex, and these were sultry multi-layered ballads. Italian ballads set the international standard back in the 60es. Even americans and British singers often visited italy and italian producers to have that kind of ballads in their repertories. Perhaps people should know that even people like Robert Plant from led Zeppelin started their career singing an italian ballad back in 1967

As an Italian Mahmood has my heart, for him as an artist, for his music, for Soldi but also for the symbol he represented by performing on the Eurovision stage after the controversy over his victory in Sanremo. I agree that after returning in 2011 Italy has improved a lot, apart from "Non mi avete fatto niente " in 2018 and "La mia città" in 2014, those were really really bad. But I have to vote for Insieme 1990 for the message.

I know that we stopped taking part to Esc because RAI wanted to save money and didn't want to host. There are rumours that a few times RAI even asked not to be voted by national juries. Especially in 1997, Fiumi di parole was doing very good, and people were starting to wonder whether the 98 contest would be held in Milan or Rome, and RAI got scared af... and Jalisse placed 4th. Voices say it happened the same with Mahmood. But they are only rumours.... Wouldn't be surprised if they were true though.

The fact that changed music productions in Italy, maybe, is the Start of X-factor Italy, and The Voice of Italy, and others talent shows that brought so many new artists on stage. Artists who, before that, didn't have any producer. Maneskin are from X Factor Italy, Emma is from a talent show called "Amici", Francesca Michielin is from X Factor Italy, Marco Mengoni is from X Factor Italy, Il Volo is from a Kid talent show on the first channel.. etc. etc. End After these talent shows, also the producers changed their style, artists and type of music. Saluti a tutti, ciao!

After Italy didn't get a good result in 1967 with a Sanremo winning song (which could be related a problem between Modugno and the orchestra) they stopped sending the song that won the festival, they often (not always) sent the Sanremo winner but with another song (sometimes not even know in Italy), even 1990 song is not really known here despite Toto Cutugno being really famous (expecially for coming 2nd in all his sanremo attempts, like 7 times, also in 1990, while no one remembers he won it once), on the other side, after 2011 we have generally sent the sanremo winner of that year (2013, 2015, 2017-19), those are the ones that have done well with televote too (all in top10), same for 1997 song, the song that didn't win sanremo didn't get high positions with televote (2011 and 2012 were loved by juries) [2011-2013 singers were chosen by an internal jury during sanremo, probably 2013 choice being the same of the winner made rai change the ideas, anyway Emma, that came 2nd in 2011 and won in 2012, was picked internally in 2014 for other reasons, could be because she was the best selling woman in 2013 in Italy or because Sanremo 2014 was weak], anyway Emma didn't have any other song that she could have sung at esc soooo, she didn't even try to get a new song, overall italians interests over the contest has been low for most of its years, (with the most watched editions being the '91 one held in Rome only because it was shown live and not later at night as the other editions and all the ones after 2015, with the numbers of watchers being around 3-3,5 m compared to the 1-1,5 m of 2011-2014 editions)

Fortunately today the new generations of singers embraced the sounds from many parts of the world and I enjoy listening to Italian pop music as well: Mahmood for example, I love that guy, he is such a great musician. But honestly, I had such a connection with Occidentali's Karma (which I rooted to win that year), so that HAD to be first, then close behind Soldi (which I feel SHOULD'VE beat Arcade, even though I rooted for Keiino), and then Volare, because it is TIMELESS. The real problem in Italy is that honestly we are not capable to be coherent with our choices. Just see to the last picks in music: we are capable to pass from the classic melodramatic ballads (whicih is in fact very italian) to Mahmood, which mix italian to arabic sounds (not a easy choice in Italy) or to the Maneskin: a genderfluid young rock group very different from italian choices... but then we are not capable to insert these new bold ideas in our society or structures... it's like we are a little schizophrenic.

well, ESC entries comes from Sanremo Festival, and in the 80-90 period the festival was really down in audience. Therefore it was put a huge effort to make it more modern to appeal a younger public. Having a youger public voting, more modern songs won.

ESC entries from the 70s weren't from Sanremo anymore until 1997, and then the rule of the selection by Sanremo came back just in 2015. Italy and its music just changed over the years, that's it. But the real level of Italian music never changed out of Eurovision.

Random thoughts: MIA MARTINI was one of a kind. Beautiful voice and soul. Such a terrible loss. MASSIMO RANIERI is a one man show, really! The gentleman can do everything. "Gente di Mare" is still my favourite, UMBERTO TOZZI has a wonderful voice. His "sparring partner", the singer you fancy is RAF (real name: Raffaele Riefoli) is a super nice guy and a good singer/songwriter. You should do a reaction to that performance 😉 MARCO MENGONI deserved better!! C'mon! The video of the brand new single "Venere e Marte" feat. Takagi & Ketra and Frah Quintale will be released tomorrow so check it out. FRANCESCO GABBANI has an interesting tone but not for everybody... DIODATO in the Arena, the beautiful Verona's amphitheatre ❤️

Fun (well, I hope so anyway!) fact about Marco Mengoni and his origins: he was born in a small town about an hour's drive North of Rome, called Ronciglione. His family owns a bakery in the neighbouring town, called Sutri, where my parents also happen to live. It's a beautiful place, but not much ever happens there. Back when Marco won Sanremo, his parents had a massive celebration in their bakery and the whole town just partied. Someone then hung a homophobic note on the door of the bakery, insulting Marco, but it was taken down and the celebration resumed. And the atmosphere was amazing!

Hi Guys , thank you for your reaction. I agree with you about our entry. We knew all along before that Marco Mengoni was winning this Sanremo because other songs level wasn't the same. Some were good like Madame, Rosa Chemical but nothing special. This Sanremo was a lot about politics, in Italy we have a far right government right now, I dont have nothing bad to say about Giorgia Meloni, but people has a bit of fear for her party background then we are doing much more progressist activities, TV shows are getting more educational about human rights, civil rights and so on. And like this was Sanremo 2023 , music wasn't great like last year but we saw in it a lot of really good monologs. If you want to see something special from Sanremo 2023 look for Rosa Chemical's Song

When you said that all italian songs in eurovision sounds the same or are at least similar you're actually right, that's because every italian song that goes to eurovision it the winning song from Sanremo's festival and it's extremely difficult to have something new and different that comes from that event, apart from soldi from Mahmood. Nice video guys!

Even though Eurovision is an Italian invention, Italians learned of its existence around 2015, before that it wasn't even broadcast on TV. Italy did not participate from 1998 to 2010 due to total disinterest. In Italy we have the San Remo Festival, from which the Eurovison derives, for us only that is important.

The rumour mill, particularly during the early years of the Internet, threw lots of theories about Italy's absence to the wall, and some of those rumours have stuck. It is agreed by pretty much everybody that RAI simply got bored of Eurovision after 1993, particularly because with the expansion into Eastern Europe, they felt Italy's influence was fading and it was a case of "taking their ball home." They had won as recently as 1990 was it wasn't just a case of them feeling grumpy about a run of bad results. The 1997 rumour is a bit more layered. RAI clearly thought that Jalisse could win. But they would have had to have been agreed as entrant long before San Remo, so the timeline is a bit borked. In any case, they were royally p-d off about not winning, and was so p-d off that they simply did a Luxembourg and vowed never to return. It's never been fully understood why Jalisse suddenly turned up with the kind of mid-tempo song out of the blue, or why Italy took it so badly when they lost, They had one more year of orchestra-backed Eurovision, they could have taken San Remo 1998 to Birminham without losing face The rest after 2011 of course is history. Oh, except for one last rumour/theory. Fans all agree that 1991 was a hosting disaster. So what if the EBU make sure that they never host again? Couple of 2nds and 3rd places make it look oh so close and maybe next year. But the truth? EBU deliberately nobble the voting to stop RAI ever hosting again. It's a theory worth exploring.

Sanremo Festival's a lot expensive, it is the most expensive musical contest in the world. Artists such as Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Shirley Bassey and Dionne Warwick (just to name few) took part as contestants, while endless is the list of internatiomal guests. That said, Eurovision (mostly known as Eurofestival) had absolutely no appeal in the italian audience at the time. It is still not considered a TV event.
