There are also plenty of children and teenagers that menstruate. I think when you inextricably link periods to womanhood you risk viewing pubescent girls as women. Sexual maturation and adulthood are two very different things - and it makes me uncomfortable when they're conflated.

IIRC, Christie's books were pretty racist, classist, and generally xenophobic. Also, many foreign cultures were definitely objectified and described as "exotic." She may have edited some newer editions a bit, but those *ist themes are still clearly noticeable. The queer-antagonism is milder, mostly "just" erasure of us or hiding queer characters in plain sight.

People stupidly don’t even count romance novels, which ends the discussion. And it’s as if Gone With The Wind and Uncle Tom’s Cabin, probably the most culturally influential American novels of the previous century AND the PRIOR century, don’t exist. Women are all over the history of the novel. In a lot of ways, they dominate it. Austen. George Eliot. The Bröntes. It’s completely ridiculous to even imply that Rowling *being a woman* is some kind of breakthrough in historical terms. What IS kind of surprising is that a man hasn’t managed to sweep in and steal the money somehow. Honestly that specific comment about her historical significance is so bad, I feel dumb even responding to it.

For a second I was like, "OMG she died???" LOL. I hate the way she argues with things nobody said, and she's just so utterly dishonest. Like biological sex is real. No one ever fucking said it isn't! That doesn't mean she knows what it even is, apparently. I also do not understand how the Right think that "Adult Human Female" excludes transfolks. These people have no idea what the fuck they're talking about and lawmakers continue listening to them over actual medical professionals and it makes me want to tear my hair out. Admittedly I'm an angry SJW mom who keeps getting adopted by trans daughters. I despise threats to my family, which JKR continues to make. I'm also angry at the families who fail their trans kids so utterly that their kids wind up adopting me. I'll take them, happily and humbly, and consider their trust in me a gift to be treasured and treated with care. I know my emotions are all over the place probably here. I blame my ADHD meds. Love to all of you, for who you are and what you do.

my hottest take about gay Dumbledore is that I actually believe that she thought about it while writing the books, but that makes it worse. The only gay character in the entire series having a single romantic relationship that was with wizard hitler and then becoming a volcel for the rest of his life, while also not spelling this out directly because actually mentioning gay characters explicitely would have been too "icky" for your childrens book is actually worse then retconning a character to be gay in my opnion

The most influential you can be is ruining a subset of genre fiction, which is to say writing something so affecting that everyone wants to copy you and because most first time writers don't know what they're doing they make a shallow reflection of it. I don't have much of a point here, I just find the idea interesting because your comment reminded me of it and I wanted to mention the trend of mediocre repetition that comes after great work and the fact that tolkein's work has ruined fantasy (in a good way weirdly) for generations and all Rowling has done is ruin her own books and public image

Ok I’m a petty hater so I was imagining a kind of Rowling vs Agatha Christie thing along the lines of t series vs pewdiepie. In some countries including the US some of Christie’s books are out of copyright so I was imagining publishing loads of copies and selling them super cheap, like at cost or for £2 and giving any profits to trans healthcare funds, while boosting Christie’s sales to keep her well ahead of Rowling. But according to Wikipedia, Christie is over a billion (and possibly up to 3.4 billion) sales ahead of Rowling so we don’t need to do it lol

Agatha Christie wrote so much racism into her books that they edited out some and one of her titles was changed long ago to remove the n-word. One of its replacement titles was only slightly better but still focused on a marginalized community, Native Americans. It’s now called And Then There Were None (the last line in the nursery rhyme that inspired the titles, and that makes the first two title choices even worse when we consider the violence and genocide done to these groups of people). We hear so many times that people “were a product of her time” but she was living in some of our lifetimes. She’s the age of many of our parents or grandparents/great grandparents. And even if she’d been born earlier there’s always been people who knew better (through experience or compassionate, critically thinking). She had her chance to change and she made her terrible choices. Go ahead. Desecrate her grave, disrespect her death.
@eleanormason2647
@eleanormason2647 3 месяца назад
She was born in 1890, I don't think anyone here has any grandparents that age. She died in 1976 at 86, so all of her formative years were long, long ago. I think we can use the product of her time discussion when it comes to people who were born two centuries ago
@maatcrook6910
@maatcrook6910 3 месяца назад
She invited a Jewish journalist to dinner who said the “anti-Jewish flavor of the talk was not to be ignored or overlooked, or put down to heavy humor or generational prejudice. It was vividly unpleasant” (Hitch 22 by Christopher Hitchens). Her entire life there were civil rights protests and people of the time spoke out against racism. Publishers changing the title of her book to remove the n-word and editing out some of her antisemitism was done in her lifetime, starting in the 1940s. Her wealth and curiosity gave her opportunities to travel and learn from People of Color, Jews, and Muslims. According to her autobiography she also had opportunities to speak with Nazis. And after one discussion made a choice to tone down her antisemitism-a little. She knew what she was doing was harmful but she never chose to stop. She had 86 years of opportunities and people to learn from but disregarded them in favor of continuing to use slurs and racist stereotypes.

Yeah, I remember listening to an inordinate number of Miss Marple and Poirot audiobooks and most of it was broadly fine, offense-wise. Same with P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves stories (besides one story that unfortunately includes blackface and slurs). The painting of Rowling as a trailblazer frustrates me most. Transphobia is tragically common, but seeing how many people have seemingly read absolutely nothing besides Harry Potter and maybe a handful of other books is different. Like I thought about the female novelists before Rowling thing and I came up with a dozen names in just a few minutes, class conflict has been a theme in literature at least since the middle ages (if you count religious texts it goes back to the bronze age), etc

Even in the most misogynistic cultures (ie dark ages europe), rich women were still taught to read, because they needed to be able to read the bible in order to get to heaven. 1:27 the discussion between a Home and a Mansion I feel should be similar to the difference between a Boat and a Ship. A Ship is specifically a boat large enough to Carry Another Boat. A Boat is anything too small to carry another boat. Ships have lifeboats in case of failure of the superstructure. A boat has no superstructure. So yes, I agree, a Mansion is a home large enough to Fit Multiple Living Spaces, why a House is only large enough to fit a single living space. An Estate, in this analogy, would be like an Armada. A gathering of many, large and small, arranged for maximum effectiveness for a goal; specifically the goal of Never Having To See Another Human Suffering So You Can Pretend They Don't.
