What’s quite funny is that she died just a few days after Princess Di, and the UK was so consumed by the aftermath of that, that Mother Teresa’s death barely registered 😂

It’s wasn’t just the UK that was consumed by Princess Di’s death. Pretty much every English-speaking country was and a few that don’t speak English. It’s difficult to explain to people now how beloved and how well known Diana was, even here in the States. There is not a celebrity today that compares and I don’t think there ever can be again (because we’re not all watching the same handful of tv channels and the same evening news every night anymore). But I remember afterwards when people would mention that Mother Teresa’s death didn’t get the attention it normally would have because of Diana’s death, people always responded with “yeah, but Mother Teresa would have wanted it that way. She wouldn’t have wanted people to make a fuss.” Some people implied strongly that God ended Diana like that specifically to give Mother Teresa the death she wanted. That take always made me sick. And furious.

I found out she was a bad cookie during sophomore history class cause the teacher mentioned her and I stg everyone had to look at everyone else to make sure we could talk shit. Nobody wanted to be the first one to badmouth the 'nicest women who ever lived' cause no one was sure pffff. Teacher talked mad shit so we all got the go ahead but tbh I still don't know why I hate her. So I'm so ready to find out exactly why I dislike this bitch :)

Ironically enough, it was my very devout Catholic aunt who first mentioned the crimes of Mother Teresa in my family - simply because she didn't believe suffering itself was a gift from God (because, you know, suffering is a punishment from God according to the freaking Bible), and she is not stupid and tries to hear both sides

Late to the party, but just a note; Many of the nuns in the order were also "encouraged" to take their vows of poverty and chastity *extremely* seriously. "The Turning; The Sisters who left" is a podcast about a few women who were in the order, and they also suffered quite serious abuse. It seems Mother Theresa was indiscriminate in her ideas that suffering was good/godly. She also applied that idea to her order as well as herself.

I mean, even getting a thin cable (you know like those thin iphone cables they 100% had in biblical times) through the eye of something like a cross-stitch needle would still be a feat #BiblicallyAccurateCables But I love the idea of taking "it's easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than it for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven" and trying to twist it to be like "oh yeah but fitting a camel through a regular human door is only a little bit difficult, so rich people can totes go to heaven as long as they're kind of nice"

i have heard (and take this with a grain of salt because i am not a biblical scholar or linguist) that the word "camel" is actually a millennia-old mistranslation of the aramaic word for "rope" (the two look quite similar). so any attempts by biblical "literalists" (who only pay attention to modern bible translations) to come up with a hypothetical scenario in which a camel could pass through the eye of a needle in any capacity is basically pointless lol

@@CynthiaMcGI’ve heard that in other parts of the world at the same time, there was an “elephant through the eye of a needle” common phrase. So on its own it’s a weird thing to make up, but it wasn’t original to Jesus and people at the time would have been familiar with it.
@neoqwerty
@neoqwerty 6 дней назад
@@CynthiaMcG That's the point though. The line is supposed to be about something ridiculous and impossible. Ergo, fitting a camel (a very large animal) through the eye of a needle (something so small that even a gnat would struggle to fit through). Like, who'd take a snowball into hell, and why are we testing its luck? And yet "a snowball's chance in hell" remains an idiom for something impossible. This is obviously the contemporary "snowball's chance in hell" idiom of that era and locale. AKA, rich people don't go to heaven because they didn't share that wealth with their neighbors and the temple, because if they did they wouldn't be rich-- because being rich requires having someone lacking around you to be compared to.

6:40 "started with only 12 followers" - shudder - Christ complex much? (According to Christian scriptures, Jesus of Nazareth had 12 apostles.) Raised Catholic, and felt I had to listen to this one. 😨😭 9:40 "Is there any gift greater than that?" On multiple occasions my mother has told me that the greatest gift my parents have to give me is their Catholic faith, while crying about how I don't go to mass anymore, and I refuse to answer her questions about whether my siblings and I might be atheist. It fucking HURTS that her "faith," which she talks about all the time, is more important to her than the needs of her children. Question: What was the point of hoarding all that money if M.T. couldn't take it with her when she died? I used to be a paid secular employee at a Catholic church, and people - people who were fairly clean and socially eloquent - would come in to beg for assistance, and my orders were to direct them to Catholic Charities, but they all said that Catholic Charities refused to help. Those who looked in rougher shape never came near the doors of the church, but stayed on other streets. 29:30 Fairytale Theatre is awesome!

And her treatment of the sick in calcutta with disregarding anyones wellbeing and feeling better , over, living to convert, and the cruelty how she did, damn. She wasntr trying to help, only to convert on deaths bad, wizthout the care. And that the money, that she used the money she got for charity, was very cheap with comfort, but sent money to the vatical, money she got explicit for a charity cause. Bloody use it in the charity. The vatican is hella rich, thats fraudilent charity basically, giving money of it to the vatican, when you were given if, for the charity, use in in that charity. Or if not to another charity even, not the loaded and rich vatican. Hell even a local chiurch would need it probably better than the bloody loaded rich vatican. Thats less ranting how rich the vatican is, but that , the vatican really does not need donations.

The first time I got to know Christopher Hitchens, it was because he had written about what a piece of garbage Mother Teresa was, he never stopped talking shit about her. I think you might have been too kind to her, tbh. I think she enjoyed making people suffer, she enjoyed hurting them, like a serial killer. Her rationale that it was good for people to suffer was her justification for the enjoyment she got from controlling and hurting them. Also, maybe her exorcism was horrible? I think they're generally unpleasant and maybe more so if you're old and sick? Maybe there were some people in the church who hated her and took the chance to beat the demons out of her. One can hope, anyway. Great episode, I learned a lot even though I've read a few stories over the years. Thanks everyone!

So I'm wondering if you used it as a source for this episode. Are your sources listed anywhere? I couldn't find them here or on Spotify. I haven't read his book, and your episode is the only detailed account I know about her, so when someone told me he was the source of people loathing her I thought of this episode & wondered if you'd share sources.

Which book? Can you tag your source?

@@DoloRobotoThis was so unintentionally funny, I love it. The irony of asking about a source from someone asking about a source... perfect.

Hitchens was not the only source. Mother T was well known for her appalling behavior.

I hate to break it to you, but there *are* people in India who liked Mother Teresa. In 2012 they did a poll called “the Greatest Indian” where Indians voted on the best person from India & she got #5. Fun fact: a lot of other countries did similar polls. Canada chose Tommy Douglas, the father of our socialized healthcare system, the USA picked Ronald Reagan.

Hate to break it to you but misinformation applies to OTHER colonised countries than the US, you selfish short sighted fool. For example, the number of Americans that think Trump is great doesn't actually change him from an animate pile of garbage into even a basic human being, let alone anything that could be qualified as great. You could use your same stupidly broken logic to assert that Hitler must have had some good ideas because he had supporters. Use your brain, for pity's sake.

Yeah well, India also practically worships Gandhi, who is also a garbage person. India has one of the highest rates of grape and ranks towards the bottom on global rankings for treating women horribly and engaging in class warfare. These aren't exactly good, upstanding people.

I think it’s extreme to conclude that Mother Teresa had evil intentions and that people should hate her. I think her vow of poverty and minimalism and self denial were part of her approach to God. Hospitals give morphine or fentanyl etc to suffering or dying people to sedate them from the pain. That’s what our society considers humane. For others prayer and awareness through the process is reality and brings one closer to God. I personally don’t believe God wants us to suffer for the sake of suffering but that suffering sometimes is part of life and sometimes can lead to growth and wisdom. My understanding is that Mother Teresa felt pretty abandoned by the church in some ways and she dedicated her whole life to the people and was suffering and isolated as well. I don’t care that some so called Christians hate LGBTQIA because they are only displaying their deep ignorance. LGBTQIA suffer and it sucks but it makes us wiser. I think that present day foster home facilities led by evidence based approaches to child psychology can be viewed as harmful to orphaned children. They are forced to endure constant therapy to reflect upon their behaviors that goes far beyond what most adults are willing or capable to endure. The attitudes that this is the way you should behave because science says its what research supports can be seen as cruel and harmful as well. There are kids suffering under government care right now. If people would understand that God is about unconditional love and stop judging and undermining Jesus teachings by pushing hate based pseudo Christianity which distorts and perverts the actual teachings and purpose of Jesus’ incarnation as the new covenant who replaced the old covenant of the Old Testament the world would be a better place. I think LGBTQIA people should reclaim Christianity and show the world an example of what Jesus taught. Unconditional love, non judgmental, compassion, humbleness, care etc. Christians have attempted to teach us that God condemns us for who he made us to be. It doesn’t get much more evil than that. The Bible says there is one unforgivable sin. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit give us our spirit. I think it could be interpreted as blasphemy against the holy spirit for a church or person to teach that a group of people is evil for being who the Holy Spirit created them to be. Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin” - for they were saying, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’” (Mark 3:28-30) Pseudo Christians don’t follow the commandments of Jesus Christ. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus never condemned LGBTQIA people for who they are. The four Gospels of Jesus are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Imagine writing an entire essay like this, and being wrong on all counts. Mother T was *_absolutely_* evil, and your denial of that just because you don't want to have your religion tarnished is very telling. Christians and hypocrisy are synonymous m
