This is Jack Black's shining moment. He didn't go off and do his own thing, he didn't get all funky with it... he sang it straight and he CRUSHED it.... one of the best live versions of the National Anthem I've ever heard. Kudos to Jack....
@@MuteGoat, I'm going to have to agree with this. Look at Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift. They literally got to make like 7 or 8 albums that were played on the radio before they even learned how to sing in real life.

Ha, true! He's brilliant and knew exactly how to create a niche for himself. Even though he's a comedian and a big goof, you can tell that there is a deeper level of intelligence and awareness going on with him. This rendition of the National Anthem is a good example--he knew it was a time to put the joking aside and let his immense talent serve the song with respect. He absolutely nailed it.
His skill for singing is always over looked because he always sings in a funny manor. But he is legit an amazing singer and doesn’t get a lot of credit for it. Also why does he look like jablinski games??

He is actually an awesome singer and much, much better than so many more artists more renowned for their singing ability and that's the shame of it all. He's dismissed as a comic doing comedy songs. As far as celebrity singers of the US Anthem go, I can only think of Whitney Houston topping Jack's performance.
And you can hear the surprise in the audience with the “WTF” style cheering. I bet he was introduced something like “Actor & comedian, Jack Black!”, then after the first line they were like…..”wait…..holy shit”. 😂
The star spangled banner is a song that the more simply it is sung the better it sounds. This makes it both difficult and easy because you cant hide behind frills if you dont have the vocal chops. Jack gets that the and has the talent to pull it off.

jack has had the honor and privilege to perform at one of the most if not prestigious Metal festivals like Ozzfest as Tenacious D Jack Black is a force to be wreckoned with. you look at him cant take the guy seriously..He didnt become an A list celebrity for nothing, much respect to Jack black.
I love that not only can he can be funny as hell, but also knows when to put it away and put his heart and soul into something beautiful. Not that comedy isn't beautiful, but you know what I mean.
I was looking for the best version today (hits all the notes without adding unnecessary ones) without a band overshadowing the vocals and not in a choir. I'm not a Jack Black fan but this is actually the best version so far. From Australia
Look up the official military singers, too. The U.S. Coast Guard usually has excellent ones because they recruit from conservatories and get classically-trained singers that way.
I still think he’s “in character” and not totally serious. Probably explains why he’s doing it at a WNBA game. Seriously doubt he’d go to one otherwise.
When you can make the national anthem sound unique through your incredible voice rather than by butchering it into some unrecognizable form, that’s when you know you’ve got talent as a singer.
I agree. I get so tired of so called vocalists making runs all over the place, scatting, rapping, or butchering the Star-Spangled Banner any other way. It's our national anthem, not a damn pop song.
Didn't know what to expect clicking on this. Got chills watching it. Found myself with my hand over my own heart. I might've cried a little. Hats off to Jack Black. That was just amazing 😘
The thing is, you could tell he knows less is more here. Sing the piece as it's written, it's already considered one of the most difficult anthems to sing, and let it be what it's meant to be. He's got the range and talent to take this way over the top, but a little restraint made this a breathtaking performance.
I have long screamed at my TV for people to just sing the anthem as it is written. Its power comes from its simplicity and lack of showiness. Yet people constantly try to gussy it up and show off. It's a humble song. The song isn't about how awesome we are and we conquer all and look at us, yea! It's literally about how the symbol of our country survived through an intense attack on a fort, survived as the symbol of our freedom and bravery. Jack Black did the spirity of the National Anthem great honor with his performance. You can hear the deep respect in his voice. It isn't about him, it's about the anthem.
