This is a video episode of the After the Deluge Podcast, which goes through every Jackson Browne album one episode at a time. Search any After the Deluge on you podcast app and scroll to S1. I usually turn the video off for podcast interviews (supposedly that improves audio quality) but a peak-pandemic Zoom call with Jackson Browne was too enticing. So I kept it on, and now I'm sharing it.
2:00 - The Dreamer
7:20 - “I can’t write a song that simple”
10:00 - “Somebody’s Baby” & simple songs
13:00 - Describing life to yourself is a cool job
16:45 - The ocean is downhill from everywhere
20:00 - Sylvia Earle and the Blue Heart of the planet
23:00 - "We need the ocean to survive"
22:45 - Coming down from acid and getting a song idea on the freeway
32:00 - Jamming with Greg Copeland and Greg Leisz
36:00 - The invaluable nature of session musicians (and how Jackson treats them)
41:45 - Me sharing an dorky story about a Jackson Browne show
43:25 - Playing acoustic and why have 10 guitars up there
49:30 - Are guitar solos dead?
52:45 - On Phoebe Bridgers, Dawes, Tal Wilkenfeld, and other young artists
54:20 - The last lines of "These Days" explained

I meet Jackson Browne 42 years ago I was dating his bus driver I went with him on his tour for along time.He was sure a real person but when I first met him I was so close to him I was shaking I didn't know what to say I felt if I look at him I would die.I was a young girl from a small town and Southern I was like a fish out of world. He had his son with him I just kept talking to his son because I was really just freaked out I didn't know if I was even breathing it caught me not ready to do that it was in a front check-in at a hotal .I bet he must had know I was so scared are I was a crazy but I won't look in his eyes .He s so insightful I felt he ed see my soul just then.I didn't know why I was so scared he was beautiful in person and so nice .I just wanted him to know I wish I could had told him that day I really enjoy him as a singer and Thank You for been soon wonderful to me.

I think that would be -fish out of water. Ok, not the best English. Jackson might have sent his kid to school.

Do us all a favor woman. Don't post anymore comments, until you at least have SOME CLUE, as how to compose a sentence in English, along with proper spelling, grammer, sentence structure, and at least some collective thoughts , which you've at least given minimal thought to. Not being mean purposely, but you honestly write worse than a 5 year old, if in fact, that 5 year old had the ability to write.

I think you guys hit it off right from the beginning. To just listen to a conversation rather than an interview as such is far more interesting and open and honest. Yes Jackson is a great guy with a ton of humanity there but he obviously enjoyed something different with the way you both connected. Cool but very warm. 😊

It amazes me that the most brilliant artists, such as Jackson, are so humble and struggle to explain their ideas. It gives me hope that through my struggles to express myself, I can get the words right. I love these older folks and their wonderful example of conscience and love.

I have always been a Jackson Browne fan, and it was fun for me to learn that Jackson Browne's mother, Beatrice Koeppel, was my teacher. I was in the Creative Writing Club that she sponsored, and I often wonder if Jackson ever read MY words in our club's publication, The Paper Bag. John H. Francis Polytechnic High School, 1975-1977

Sure, I had heard _Doctor My Eyes_ when it was getting a lot of airplay, but the first time I heard _The Pretender_ I knew I had heard one of the greatest *records* ever written. That was a really cool/sweet talk with Jackson…enjoyed every second. What’s really ironic is I spent the day alone in my music room playing guitar along with many of his videos…I’ve been a fan of his music seems like forever…he’s a few years older than I… but not much so I could always kinda relate to his music. Anyway keep up the interviews, I appreciate how you let him speak without interrupting, great job. He comes off as a very likable cat…which is very cool “these days”. Peace & love…Cheers

This is a great interview. I subscribed! Oddly, I have seen many aspects of Jackson's lower floor but have never seen him in his upstairs kitchen. :) Also, really great to hear him speak of the quarter tones line, which I have also thought could be a stronger line. In fact, I have tried replacing that line but have never come up with anything worthwhile. Thanks for posting this... :)

Do it Jackson, buy some land, and do nothing with it except plant more trees. We tried that with our little hobby farm until we had to sell it, the woman who bought it ended up being some sort of land exploiter, cut down all the maples, and built a road over the wetland. That was 25 years ago and I am still hurt over that for many reasons, one of which is that she lied to us about her intentions. Knowing someone would just buy land for wildlife to use is a dream of mine. I wish more people would do it.

Very interesting and thoughtful guy. Just saw him last week. The show is a combination of what he wants to say and what we wanted to hear. Unfortunately, though his activism is clearly sincere, the subjects he has chosen to write about over the past several decades are not in his wheelhouse. They sound forced and one-dimensional. His writing over his first 5-6 albums was introspective and universal. Songs from the heart (or the funny bone, like Redneck Friend) always beat songs from the head.

Interesting story re what was the impetus for a song. My wife is from Hidalgo. Jackson has always related to liberal left issues. I remember no nukes etc. Nothing wrong w that view. Funny w my wife being from Hidalgo and living in the Mexican part of a town that's become 60% Spanish. Kids not knowing what parents home culture was not a big fear of loosing. I see it every day. Then there comes the pisa/ pocho thing. The border is a blessing and a curse for the crossers as it is for people here. The ideal of people looking for a better life has changed. The sad change in the dynamic is the cartels doing. Of course the appetite for drugs of United States gave/ gives the cartel it's prime source income. Lately they tax crossers. Many crossers arrive in the US owing the cartels thousands. I gather they just add a fee like Mafia charged fro protection. So when that person is here they are required to pay the bill that usually means working off the debt. Some examples might be meaning an illegal pot farm in the desert. Stealing water and keeping locals and police away by issued m16s. Another is being a mule. Cartel doesn't want to risk taking illegal stuff across. Mules get to take the risk for them. Then the most Insidious is forcing people into sex business. I hear about war on human trafficking and I see the porous border supplies the cartels w many bodies to manipulate. When I hear parents send their kids for better life I shudder about their naivete. Many come for a better life and expect they will work hard and life will get better. Some come to work an angle. The border has always been a risky place with people on the make on both sides. Now with the huge volume largely an effect of knowledge that border rules won't be really enforced. I'm all for the crossers searching for opportunity I'm sad that crossers HAVE BECOME an opportunity for the cartels to mess with. ....... the interview very cool. Loved how Jackson pointed out how do you pay someone for a great lead. Also his talk re many guitars. Em......dang that is a great tuning. Haunting feeling. Thanks.

Aww, I’ve listened to Jackson for so long, it’s a bummer he has such contempt for the right wing. I’m a conservative, a “right-winger”, who believes the election was stolen, and I love his music.

I would like to know why jackson and James taylor - who were on the same bill a yr or so ago Only played 2 songs we were familiar with - it was bazaar - as we walked out after the show everyone was quiet - I made the comment that I wanted my $$ back - then people started to comment - Everyone was a bit bewildered - no running on empty or sweet baby blues- only 2 hits - the rest were his new stuff - it was awful - both of them - tickets were expensive - People want to hear the iconic songs - not the mediocre songs about reflection and politics - I still want my money back

I do kinda talk a lot in this one huh. Suppose this is more of a conversation than an interview. Couldn't help it!

I hate it when the interviewer speaks more than the person being interviewed

Hey man - get another profession, as interviewers must focus and listen to their subjects.
