Jake has next-level body control, like a world-class dancer. He makes mechanical adjustments within one or two pitches that most guys would need one or two starts just to diagnose, let alone fix. This is why I think sticky substances might actually hinder him rather than help, because they could interfere with his ability to self-correct, if that makes sense. He doesn’t rely on getting a lot of movement; he relies on precise, controlled movement.

Ohtani pitched well against the Giants today. 6 IP- 1 run but S.F. won 9-2 in 13 innings.

@Samoht ,Lord of Eternal Darkness and Chaos - He threw 105 pitches in 6 innings. That is 17 per inning which computes to 153 over 9 innings. It was the right thing to pull him. He was getting no offensive support.

It's all about staying healthy. Also, if only Degroom would hit 30 hrs before the ASB I'd go for him, but Ohtani is just an X-Men. People like me who have played, watched, and know baseball know what that guy is doing is just something from another planet.

@@cygnus024Man, you read my mind. Greg Maddux is one of my all time favorites. As a diehard Braves fan, I have seen him start many a game, and he was absolutely surgical with his control. But as good as he was, he didn't have the kind of velocity on his pitches that we are seeing with Jake deGrom. Time will tell how good he really is and where he finishes on the list of all-time greats.

@@cygnus024 Maddux walked 999 in his career, or 1.8 BB/9. deGrom’s career BB/9 is 2.1 (and decreasing). They’re both great: Peak-peak Maddux (1994-1997): 209 ERA+. Peak deGrom (2018-present): 209 ERA+. Maddux gave up fewer walks and home runs, but could strike guys out. deGrom gives up fewer hits and gets more strikeouts, but is good at limiting home runs and walks. Both great fielders, both precision pitchers. (By the way, deGrom grew up a Braves fan, although he was a position player until he was 20.)
