James ‘Lights Out’ Toney amassed a record of 77-10-3. A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan he was a real throwback-style fighter who must have been nightmare for opponents.
I have identified 5 of his key boxing techniques, 5 fearsome factors. In summary, they are:
1. Stance and Footwork
⁃ Double cover or lead hand low
⁃ Varied weight distribution - constantly altered to suit opponent
⁃ Shoulder Roll/Half-Philly Shell
⁃ Switched very occasionally (first Michael Nunn knockdown)
2. Pressure
⁃ Constant grind forward
⁃ Rarely took a backward step
⁃ Turn the screw
⁃ Defensively-minded aggression
3. Defense into Attack and Vice Versa
⁃ Break Down
⁃ Shoulder Roll onto hook
⁃ Consummate counterpuncher - active
4. Punching Variations
⁃ Hooks
⁃ Uppercuts
⁃ Long shots - rotation
⁃ Squared for power when going for it.
5. Aggression and Intensity
⁃ Full-blooded!
⁃ Everyone knew why he was there
⁃ Exciting - real exciting style
So they are the boxing techniques that build my 5 Fearsome Factors of James Toney.
Cheers
Fran

I can’t understand why he gave Roy Jones so much respect during their bout. He should have took it to Roy more aggressively. He was technically miles ahead of Roy.

@@r.a.8407 If you want to deliver a short hard right , you need throw your left first , but only to set up the right , and they must land as close as possible after each other , almost at the same time, and what i find important is you breath out once very hard for both that left and right , not that difficult , very powerfull. Or you can do a pull counter , shoulder roll and bam.

@@jonasbuyle1341 the way joe louis would throw the right cross was almost like an overhand hook & head turn it over at the end. He often leans a when throwing the right hand...something that I would get pulled up on when at a new gym, however it allows you to get maximum reach and also gets your head off the centre line...this is once you know you’ve set it up expecting it will land
@denisesayers8520
@denisesayers8520 4 года назад
I have noticed that aswell. He throws his right hand and if he misses his upper torso is practically level with the ground. But it is also off the centre line. Then he can just easily roll under the counter hook that will be coming at him. Genius

Class video as usual Fran! Would you say he’s similar to Canelo in terms of style, as in generally edging forward but waiting for you to throw then defend first then counter? My thing with Toney is that in earlier years he used his legs to hit and move and worked a treat but then slowed down a lot. Also would you say he changed up his guard when attacking like Canelo does? High guard when in front foot and change to shoulder roll when defending/countering? Would you say to leads attacks as well as countering or tend to look for the counter most of the time, despite being the pressure fighter? An absolute master as well on the back foot such as vs Barkley - the perfect study video for fighting a pressure fighter.

Hi Fran, your fighter an analysis is very interesting to listen to. I'm sorry to ask lame questions but I'm a noob ok? 😁 OK, if you have a tall, lean boxer who you can be pretty sure their opponents will usually be shorter, would a fighting style like Toneys be what YOU would lead them towards? And if the point is to hit and not get hit, why do boxing fans call that "running"? It's not like there turning their backs and actually running out of the ring!😄 If you ever read this, or if you don't, Thank You either way for sharing your insight. 👋👋👋🙋

Just learn the basics, realize what patterns are effective or not during sparrings, then you will feel what fits for you. Never try mimicking each others style, especially when you're inexperienced. You will forget everything when you'll get punched in the face anyway. There's no magic tricks.

I would ensure that they understand that their height and reach is a positive and that generally long range would be their string suit. But, they need to have some tactics for close up too. Key is to learn basic boxing skills well. Great skills wins, regardless of height. This vid might be worth watching - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3Crm2HRy-2s.html
