Raise Your Hands with Tom Jones on his TV Show is well worth a watch. Two quite different artists both with amazingly powerful voices. Tom was used to blowing everyone away with his vocal performances, but with Janis he was the one having to run to keep up with her. The result was a fantastic, and fun duet.

JANIS!!! A one off to be sure, there will never be another, she was so fantastic...and that voice, that energy! Thank you for reacting to this one. About that screaming voice, I don't know but Steven Tyler is still sounding the same after so many years singing with Aerosmith and he screams it out. I think that some singers just have that ability and it never goes away.

Janis Joplin was very special. There is a current artist that does alot of the things that Janis Joplin did. There will never be another Janis Joplin, but the artists that follow in her footsteps give us new material that Janis might have done if she were able to continue her career. Performing with that gravelly belt can take its toll on a person's voice however there are techniques to protect your vocal folds. Serious performers turn to vocal coaches to learn how to protect their voice. A great example is Beth Hart who has the power to belt with the same intensity. Over the years she has learned to protect her voice yet still be able to deliver the gravelly belt with incredible tone, vibrato or rasp. Check out her cover of Black Coffee with Joe Bonamassa. If Janet had lived long enough she would possibly have developed the same maturity and range.

This is her signature song, she lived fast because she felt she had to live the blues to be able to sing the blues authentically. I don't consider this her best performance of the song, she's not focused on the performance. I recommend listening to her live duet with Nick Gravenites 'Ego Rock' from her "Joplin in Concert" album, it's bluesy and funny at the same time: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QDl_gTFVr2U.html

LOOOOOOVE your reaction, HBMR!!!! She was such a shooting star. From the bullying she suffered in high school for her looks and for sticking up for liking African American, r&b music at a time when that was taboo in her town of Port Arthur, TX. There's another singer that's in the process of bursting into the rock scene who many say is the next "Janis Joplin". This young lady has a similar growl, grit, rasp . . . BUT she also has a beautiful soft voice and, in that way, is more versatile than JJ. Her name is Courtney Hadwin and in 2018 she sang Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle" on America's Got Talent and that audition became the 4th more viral moment in AGT's 15-year history. They state that she has over 300 million views on those audition videos!!! Here is the link - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gPHVLxm8U-0.html About a year later, in 2019, she performed JJ's "Piece of my Heart" at a concert by British rock group, The Struts. They invited her to perform 2-songs, including this one. She was ONLY 14 at the time!!! - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dq6XN2jS1sE.html THANK YOU!!!!

If you want to hear where Janis's inspiration came from listen to Etta James. A good song of hers that will show you what I mean is "I'd Rather Go Blind". Listen first to the recorded version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u9sq3ME0JHQ.html and then to a live performance of it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uZt1xKtPbUQ.html.
