Hey Sean. Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your attitude towards gaming. Your appreciation of a wide variety of genres is somewhat unique among game critics, and I think it's a crime that your not more popular. Cheers from Atlantic Canada :D
I think your Japan only PS1 series has taken the helm as YT videos I anticipate the most, Sean. You knock it out of the park every time, man. Cosmowarrior looks amazing btw. That bird/cat segment hahahaha
Have i ever heard of a story based shmup thats based over 2 disks?, actually yes i have i have heard of one that's a shmup that's actually over 4 disks & it's called 70's robot anime geppy-x. Every level in the game plays out like a tv anime with fully sung intro and ending as well as commercial breaks halfway through and the coming episode at the end of each stage it's pure madness & i love it.
This video alone shows the reason why the Japan Only series is my favourite one in the channel, because it's the guarantee to always discover new games that I've never heard about ! Every single game presented here are interesting: - TIZ Tokyo Insect Zoo: by the title I thought it would be a Pokemon-like game with a gameplay on collecting insects, but definitly no haha. It's the least interesting one of the video, and I'll never spend my money to try it, but a curiosity always good to discover. - World Pro Tennis '98: I consider Virtue Tennis as the best game ever made on Dreamcast, so for me discovering a new tennis game of that era is always interesting, even no one ever satisfied me as much as Virtua Tennis. The gameplay looks different and interesting, but the graphics looks very bad ! Also, you didn't mention it, but this game have the most generic game title you could ever imagin for a tennis game xD - Meta-Ph-List μ.X.2297: this game is the reason why I love Japan Only videos, it's something you could never imagin exists in PS1 ! I don't like that much shmups games, because they're all too much generic with the same formula and graphics it's kind of boring, but this one I want to try it ! The RPG system and the 360 degree shoooting makes it interesting, and this without considering the weird artistic direction and cinematics. - CosmoWarrior Zero: as you mentionned it, the first thing I though after seeing the first seconds of gameplay, is Heavy Metal Geomatrix on Dreamcast, a game that... unfortunatly I never liked cause of the very bad gameplay mechanics. But I love this kind of battle arena game mechanics, and this game looks pretty solid with its arcade gameplay and level design. And it's a Taito game. Thanks again for this lovely video ! Waiting for the next one with great pleasure as always !
Japanese people were fascinated by American cinema in the 80s and 90s, drawing a lot of inspiration from it, so some devs used an English dub with Japanese subtitles for a more exotic cinematic effect.
Ah, okay, TIZ is the bizarre game you were referring to, huh? It definitely looks interesting and just reminds me that I REALLY need to learn Japanese... Also, wow, the Xevious influence in MetaPHList is HEAVY. from the enemies to the patterns to certain level backgrounds, there is a lot of Xevious... ummm... "homage" going on there! Aaaand I also lost it with the "third person perspective" bit. Well played. 😀
It was a mixture of TIZ and MetaPhList, playing both of those games late at night lead to some weird dreams lemme tell ye. And thank you, I'll make the letter H my friend someday... I promise 😅
@@SeanSeanson Oh Lord, I can imagine... Did you also drink a litre of milk right before bed, too? 🤪 And hey, as long as you've got solid bits like that, H can just be, like, a solid acquaintance, y'know?
25:35 no, but i do know a story driven ps1 shmup that covers 4 DISCS, Geppy X. I really hope the wheel provides us with that game in the next entry of this series.
Game 1: Yeah, I remember that game ... well, somewhat. What I mostly remember is the sphere at the beginning of the game you have to shape and form. Also I own Pen Pen TriIcelon and yes...yes, it is quite weird. Game 2: That looks like a nice tennis game. When it comes to PS1 tennis games I only know the ones you mentioned and Baby Felix Tennis. Game 3: That one is truly bizarre. That might be the biggest power-up shots I've ever seen. Also some of the cutscenes gave me a Legend Of Galactic Heroes vibe. And now I want to drink a Chameleon (as weird as that sounds). Game 4: When I saw the characters, I immediately thought: "Yo, this looks like Captain Harlock!" and then you said they were drawn by the same mangaka. Interesting gameplay, somewhat similar to Power Stone. Thank you so much for bringing us another video of random Japanese PS1 games! 😀
I remember seeing Tokyo Insect Zoo over on the Vinesauce channel years ago so it was nice to see it here. Your videos appearing in my feed are a highlight of my day for sure.
I’m gobsmacked you only have 2,000 subscribers. You should have more than that. These videos are peak entertainment and I love to watch both the obscure PS1 games and this series. Let’s get this guy over 10,000 and beyond! He deserves it! Also, if I have to pick games for both series, my Japanese PS1 games selection would be Screaming Mad George’s ParanoiaScape while my Obscure PS1 games selection would be Hogs of War. Keep it up Sean!
A friend recommended me this video. I greatly enjoyed it, especially with the Moonlight Syndrome music at the beginning and end. I shall watch the rest of your channel.
I think I saw Midnight Lagoon during the intro - that game got an English translation recently. It's a pretty interesting title in my opinion. Maybe it'll show up on this show sometime soon? I guess we gotta see what the Wheel deems appropriate.
I've never heard of Meta Ph List Gamma X 2097, thank you Sean this is why I love your channel, I've shared your video in Shmup discord servers and forums
Amazing, this video really made my day at work. :3 I like how all the games listed here can be united as works of passion, but each game gives you a unique answer on what that "passion" might be. If I'm making any sense xD
That might be the most eclectic mix of games your wheel has chosen yet. And that's saying something. Thoroughly enjoyed you talking us through these obscurities as always, and I swear I heard Meta-Ph-List drop a curse word lol
Catching up on this series and man, Metaphlist has some levels and effects that feel like it was made by DemoSceners trying to show off hardware tricks. And then so much of the rest feels amateur and messy. It almost feels like a team of people who were pretty talented but inexperienced WANTING to basically do DemoScene stuff but not actually being able to pull it all off fully. I kinda love it. Big complicated messy experiments are always so interesting.
Honestly, I think these four games interested me the most. Even Tokyo Insect Zoo. My Japanese is mediocre, but I would like to see if it's on the PS Store and try it out. I seek out Japan only games with either a lotta voice acting or furigana to help me learn the language better.
Not to be pedantic, but it’s Tri-Icelon (try ice-a-lon), as in Triathlon. 😋 Also: can vouch for Cosmowarrior Zero that it is a hoot. Thanks for these videos, Sean. :-)
I have a question for you since you mentioned that Combat Queens game: have you considered "upgrading" your video formats to include PS2 games? There's a lot of overlooked and bizarre releases that would fit the retro PlayStation theme of your channel really well.
Yes, absolutely! It's kind of the holy grail for the format really and one that I want do justice! So when the time is right (and I have the time in general) it will eventually show up. Can't say when but... eventually 👀
-I seen Vinny Vinesauce play Tokyo Insect Zoo. The lack of ui, prompts, or subtitles (even if they're native lagnguage ) feels off, especialy at the interactive segments. -Nice tennis jazz -I love the bloated bullet pixels, so stupid. And this story has some sound novel presentation with those blue people. -It's funny how Virtual On has pioneered 3rd person arena anime fighters. Also wow youtube there is no Moonlight Syndrome to be seen. Not even on the wheel .
5:00 Someone who knows about Animals of Farthing Wood! I never hear anyone talk about it! As messed up as it was, I absolutely loved that series, squashed hedgehogs and baby mice on spikes and all. I even read the books. (I was like... 8 or 9. I think the reason I enjoy dark fiction to this day is in part because of AOFW, honestly)
You say that Meta-ph-list has no save functionality, but the back of the box says that a memory card is *mandatory* to play the game? Gonna have to track down a copy of that game for myself. Precisely my kind of irresistible insanity. Tokyo Insect Zoo too for that matter.
Keep in mind even though I couldn't find it, there may be some memory card or save functionality in there all the same. I recently played a game that has no save options but features a mandatory auto-save feature. So it could feature something similar!
I must say it Your content is GOD Tier Quality i hope you have 10,000 subs in the future! PD:i don't know if i gonna make it but here's my game for the next volumen the game is:milano no arubaito collection
idk who keeps telling you you cant use google lense but uhhh you can use google translate and the microphone function will do the verbal translate work.
