Deep within the mountains of Japan there is a town that made it through one of the countries' largest earthquakes. To show gratitude to the support received from sister cities in the US, they have joined a program called Arigato Host Town.
And today we tell the story of this one simple, yet amazingly famous spot.
A small, quiet town that is known to almost every Japanese person as the Japan's Ramen Town.
Shooting Location: Kitakata City, Fukushima Pref.
(“Arigato” Host Town for Supporting Reconstruction)
What is the Host Town Initiative?

Aloha Norm, I've been up all night, can't settle. It was great for me to find your post! Things are tough here on the big island. The unknown seems to be so tough. while there's not much else going on in the town itself, Kitakata is just north of Aizu Wakamatsu where there's an awesome castle with a crimson roof (Tsuruga-jo, the crane castle), a weird helical pagoda called Sazae-do, the famous Ouchi-juku post town to the south, and the even more famous picturesque area along the Tadami-line to the west(i love staying around Aizu-Yanaizu). and a bit further north of Kitakata is Yonezawa in neighboring Yamagata prefecture. Yonezawa is one of the most famous wagyu brands in Japan.

i'm so glad they started opening chains of Kitakata Ramen shops in SoCal. the broth is sooooo light, you could easily drink the whole bowl without ever feeling full or heavy. and the noodles are unique in that the noodle has an uneven distribution of thickness throughout the noodle giving it a very "fun" chew factor. i would love to one day go to the source Kitakata Ramen shop to enjoy the OG.

When the head chef acknowledges that the floor staff have it hard and work real hard, it's just so humbling and appreciative. Something that you don't commonly find in the Western world. Thankfully I am not sequestered in a dodgy hotel room; however, I'm not allowed to leave my home unless it's burning. I think even the two toads who castigated me at customs when I asked clarify questions of what exactly I was and was not allowed to do would have said that was okay. The thing after the ramen is the city. It looks gloomy and scary but that's the beauty, Its so calm. A bit cold top of that the cloudy environment, not much people makes it the best, I bet the air if fresh also. Like I literally can walk across the town in this environment it will make my whole day. Hopefully I will go there one day.

Ahhh... Ramen is my favorite food ever, this just made me extremely hungry for a nice bowl even though I just ate something, damn! Seeing a documentary about a food I love with such an amazing quality of filming, production and editing just made me completely speechless while watching it, had my eyes glued to the screen :D

Having a meal with the master chef?! What a privilege! That's where the man's passion for the cuisine shone through. After a long day's work, he was still eager to make more ramen.

Mr. Bannai seems like a great person and his ramen looks mouth watering. Definitely adding this place to my list of places to visit.

AH I absolutely love this video, The scenery always takes my breath away and you were right Norm not to watch this even slightly hungry! I'm craving ramen so bad right now haha. I loved that gratitude was a big theme in this which fits so well. Gratitude can really shift ones perception about anything you might be facing. I loved the end where The shop owner offers you a bowl of ramen and you guys just hang out like old friends at the end, its beautiful to see.

I think one of the best things on every country is the hidden jens you stumble upon. This video made me feel I'm actually in Kitakata!

Norm, you hit it out of the park. The cinematography was awesome (everything from sweeping overhead shots, to quiet street views, to details like the chopstick shrine gates), not to mention thoughtful discussions with the chef and even the cab driver! In the best food documentaries, I not only learn something but I'm also hungry by the end. Congratulations, you succeeded :)

This was great, thanks Norm. Glad to see one of these kinds of videos from you. Loved the intro, even without the cinematography you paint a vivid picture with your narration. The travel bug in me has been itching to get out and about but sitting tight in my prefecture for now till this blows over. This will be another place to add to my list :)

Thanks so much for showing us Japan thru your lens. I can’t wait until I am able to go back. My first visit there last year was not enough. It is a place I can see myself going back to again and again. It is just so special.

On my very last night in Tokyo, back in August (2019), I went into that ramen shop with my friends and sat in that exact chair! We were completely drunk and just needed a bowl of ramen to settle our stomachs for the night and it was the best ramen bowl I have ever had in my entire life.

Really enjoy the personal side you provide in the videos. Most videos are "Look at this place!" You always add a personal story of the locals in your videos. Very heartwarming. Gives the viewer a much greater appreciation. Thanks for sharing!

I can without a doubt, very easily, replace all of my meals with ramen! I’ll have ramen for breakfast, before lunch snack, ramen for lunch, mid afternoon ramen snack, for dinner and before bed snack! I love ramen! As a matter of fact, I’m having some right now!

Areas with good water also have good sake, soy sauce, and miso. Kitakata is also a town of breweries that brew these products.
