JAPANESE FOOD - Rotator Belt Sushi Restaurant

I'm going to tell you a secret here, Rysouke doesn't actually like sushi (gasp!). Well, at least not as much as everything thinks he "should," because he's Japanese.
Sushiro is one of the best "affordable" sushi restaurants in Tokyo, so we often take friends visiting from the States or other guests there.
Before he married me, Ryosuke would probably grab sushi at a rotator belt place once a year. Maybe. Now we go once every two months with guests :)
There is this stereotype that all Japanese people eat sushi all the time - and it's just not true. Or at least, that's my experience.
For those of you living in Japan, how often do y'all eat sushi?

My hubby and I do conveyor belt sushi about once per week because it's so cheap! My favorites are tuna with avocado, onion and mayonnaise, the special marinated tuna, and the salmon with a smokey sauce on it!! Though I have been branching out and recently tried a couple squid options, octopus (too chewy) and eel!

San Francisco has a Sushi Boat restaurant in the Theater District. It's kind of like Sushiro, but the plates of food go around in a miniature river, floating on little rafts. I like it.

I am coming to Japan in a week and I am excited to eat at sushiro! Sushi in Australia is very expensive, sometimes $4 for 1 roll!
@jdlgrishanne
@jdlgrishanne 9 лет назад
I dare say that's not too bad. Here in America (Texas to be exact). The cheapest roll is $4 at the good sushi place near me (The kind of place where they don't leave the fish sitting out uncovered & you can taste it or try to serve you old fish). Anyway, I hope you have fun in Japan & eat lots of sushi! Do it for me, because I can't!!

Here's a fun story: All sushi I've tried so far has been great, except for one which had salmon roe on the outside of the roll. I thought it was breadcrumbs or something because the eggs were tiny so I shoved the whole thing in my mouth (as you do) then began to feel incredibly sick...I've never felt so nauseous in my life. I then looked at my friend as I still had half of it in my mouth then she said she forgot to tell me they were eggs hahaha. But the thing is, I have no idea what they tasted like, I just know that they really made me want to throw up...I'm surprised I didn't but I kept holding back as I refused to do so, especially because I used to have quite a bad vomiting phobia...I'm pretty sure even the Japanese food that is classed as strange would probably taste better for me.

I've wondered how they calculated the bill. So they tally up the number of plates and the what? Do they charge by the number of yellow plates and the number of white ones? Because that system looks perfect for a dine-n-dash.
@emilylessnau73
@emilylessnau73 9 лет назад
At the conveyor belt sushi places I go to the plate color DOES change the price. Usually you get 2 pieces of sushi for 100 Yen. There are different price levels though. You can also get karage, udon, ramen, etc. at conveyor belt sushi restaurants! Those "bowls" are different colors too. This is how it has been at 80% of conveyor belt sushi joints I've been to. One near my house has a separate "train" so you can pick things at random off the rotating belt and then special orders are delivered on a 1 way track straight to your table. They also have a drawer for used plates so you drop them in and after 5 plates you get a prize from a capsule machine sitting above your table! And Japan is so honor-based that no one would dream of doing a dine-n-dash! The register is by the exit anyway...
@FUBAR956

@DeltaXIII13

You can get some dishes for a different price at the Sushiro I've been to, but the yellow and white plates are 100 yen. The difference for those two colors is if the sushi has wasabi or not.
