Jason Isbell is one of the most important Southern voices in music today. He started writing and releasing his own songs in 2007, after a stint with the Drive-By Truckers. Since then has slowly built a catalogue of songs and a resume - which includes a key songwriting contribution to Bradley Cooper's version of “A Star Is Born” - that should put him on anyone's short list of the best songwriters currently working. Isbell and Rick Rubin met for the first time just before this conversation where they discuss Isbell's recovery from addiction, his song writing process and his deep Southern roots.

I think of Jason as the James Taylor of this generation. He’s such a prolific songwriter. So inspiring. I didn’t even listen to country music before him. Now I’m hooked. So much so that it’s been all I have written for several years. The honesty in his music and lyrics are incredible. I’ve written songs simply by being inspired by interviews he’s done like this. He is my favorite songwriter these days. Thank you for sharing this.

He's got a lot of attributes of several of the greatest singer-songwriters of the 70's...JT, Kristofferson, Townes. Every album he drops is phenomenal.

I remember 10 or 15 years ago listening to DBT and telling my gf at the time that Jason was going to be one of the greats, up there with John Prine, Lyle Lovett, and Townes Van Zandt. She told me I was an idiot. We're not together anymore.

I've been writing and saying Jason will be a superstar....and he is getting closer and closer with each passing album. The world needs more smart intelligent heartfelt brilliant music and less autotune, dance crap and this guy is the full meal real deal. Best songwriter of this generation and going to be one of the best ever. His new album Reunions is superb..and makes five killer albums in a row. His 2013 masterpiece Southeasternis one of the best of the 21st century.

I doubt he wants to be a superstar but might happen whether he likes it or not. Love his music

He could’ve sold out and became a “super star” a long time ago. He’s been winning Grammy’s since 2013’s Southeastern.

A great conversation. Rick Rubin was really tuned into what Jason had to say and offered insights about song writing that seemed to genuinely impress Jason. I enjoyed hearing two immensively talented people discuss the creative process.

I just love the way both these guys think. I'm a huge Isbell fan so this is really cool for me to hear talk to someone like Rick, alot of this interview I've heard from passed interviews but Rick brought some new cool stuff out of Jason.

Loved Jason and his songs with the Truckers always were some of my favorites. Southern Rock Opera and especially Dirty South still stand out today 12+ years later as some of my favorite records of the early 2000's. We have a lot of the same musical taste. All over the place! I was crushed when he left DBT but now the 400 unit with Jason's writing have eclipsed DBT and he keeps getting better. He is at the point now where he can put on a show and crush you start to end with strong songs that speak directly to everyone in the crowd. It's really nice to see him and Amanda on stage together and has a little bit of the Derek and Susan vibe of looking at love on stage. It's a beautiful thing to watch with them and the Trucks/Tedeschi Band. Probably my two favorite bands right now are Jason and the 400 and Trucks/Tedeschi Band. Can't wait until this is over to see them again.

I agree. the pentecostal roots. music. deep thought and empathy on the original pentecosts. now a relic. of all that hell fire & damnation I endured. but it leaves something in you. Jason, Billy Ray, Eric Church. not just a radio replica of everyone else's work. Im from Mobile Bay, Alabama and I am so proud of Jason Isbell.

I realize its not the intention with these conversations, but I really think Rick (and it feels awkward using his first name since I don't know him, but Mr Rubin sounds even sillier lol) comes across almost like a guru when talking to some folks in these. And its not just people younger than he is or in the same field coming up. Its almost the socratic method type situation - asking questions that open things up and then open another layer etc. And he does it with the insight and wisdom that other people recognize and realize they ought to be paying attention. But at the same time he's very humble and clearly isn't trying to reshape people's perspectives necessarily, but rather provide them with alternative viewpoints that are a take it or leave it as needed sort of thing. I've really liked/respected a lot of the music he's worked on over the years, but in the last week or two since coming across the videos here on YT (still haven't heard the podcast itself, I probably need to sign up for spotify or something so that I can hear his and some others.) I've developed a lot of respect for him as a person period. As a "frustrated artist" (a writer and a not very good from a technical standpoint musician) I feel like I've picked up ideas from these myself, and I wanted to say I greatly appreciate that as well. So, thank you for what ya'll have done thuss far, and keep up the good work.
