Jason Isbell is a national treasure. If We Were Vampires is the single greatest love song ever written, because it's not about the soppy, sugary sweet kind of love at the beginning of a relationship, or the intense, fiery passion that everyone sings about. It's about the quiet, steadfast dedication to that one person for a lifetime, and the knowledge that your time together is made sweeter, more beautiful, and more poignant simply by its finite nature. All love ends. It's the ones that end in the last breath of a long life that are truly, deeply beautiful.
That’s the kind of statement that I would almost always consider to be a stretch, but Jason’s lyrics are actually pretty close to that level. Definitely a poetic genius.
Jason Isbell is a once in a lifetime talent. John Mayer called him the “best lyricist of our generation.” “Speed Trap Town”, “Cover Me Up”, “Something More Than Free” and “If It Takes A Lifetime” are instant classics.
I rarely ever request Cover Me Up anymore because it almost always starts an argument from the people who somehow think Morgan Walle 's version is better. I will never understand. But that's sad because it's such a beautiful song, the first of his post-Drive By Truckers that ever really grabbed me.
That was so damn beautiful. My Dad passed a few months back and I let mom hear the song and its the first time I have seen her smile in a while. Thanks guys.
Definitely need to do more Isbell! Cover Me Up is another brilliant and expertly crafted love song, and Elephant is maybe the most surprisingly sobering and powerful country tune dropped in the past decade. Isbell is one of the greatest songwriters alive.
So glad you got to this song. I haven’t heard a song by him yet that doesn’t leave you thinking about the lyrics. Some other great ones by him are “Cover Me Up”, “Molotov”, “Speed Trap Town”, “Songs That She Sang in the Shower”, just to name a few.
Cool song for sure beautiful lyrics it's like a book club song lol it's a song you want to share with someone to listen too and talk about it after ! And reflect on life great reaction great great song ! ❤✌
I feel this song in the back of my throat. Singing along makes me voice crack every time. I have to force myself to be brave when listening. My favourite love song ever written
Now you can try a bunch of other great Isbell tunes. Jason does play guitar on this. That's his wife (and an accomplished performer in her own right) Amanda Shires singing harmony
My goodness this one killed me!😢 I so far have had 33 yrs with my life’s partner and forever will never be long enough! This one really got to me. The voice is amazing. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 We always tell our son when one of us goes the other will die of a broken heart and won’t be far behind.
Glad you guys liked them! Poetic and gut check are both great descriptors of a lot of Isbell's songs. Jason is more Americana but in my book that still falls as a sub-genre of country. The beauty of it is you can listen to a JI album and hear a wide variety of styles. Speed Trap Town should definitely be the next one you guys check out! Or maybe Elephant.. 🤔 It's really hard to choose a song. It's easier to tell you which album you should check out first. Lol. The guitar he plays on this song is a Dobrato which is a resonator which may partially explain the different sound. You can see it on his episode of Rig Rundown, if you ever watch that.
The guitar is a "Resonator guitar". The sound is created diffentrently that other acoustic guitar. Looks quite different as well. The most known brand is Dobro.
@@BourbonCountryReacts that's an awesome analogy. Me and Jason are from the same podunk town in North West Alabama so maybe I'm being a little biase but, I just love every word of every lyric. I love that he doesn't waste a word. There's no fillers. Everything thing he says means something. Anyway, I'm drunk and mourning the loss of Taylor Hawkins so I'll stop there.
lol, don't get me started on sparkly vampires. And, supposedly, an epic "Silmarillion" film project is supposed to be in the works. Seems like one of those things that will either be incredible, or horrible, with no in-between. - Keith
Beautiful song, new artist for me and now I'm going to go look him up and listen to more! Great reaction. I also told my hubby that I get to go 1st, and yep world watch out if I do.
Lost the love of my life last year. This song floated to me thru some searches when I was in my feels during the aftermath. It's beautiful and destroys me because so many words we said to each other. Anyway love the song, but was the first time it was hard to watch the video all the way thru. You guys are great, keep up the good work. Bless you Holly good bribe.
Great video reaction! Jason is not really country, more Americana or singer songwriter kinda thing. You should try more of his, maybe "Speed Trap Town" , "Elephant", or anything from Southeastern.
I don't see it in your comments but it's interesting to note that Jason is singing this song with his wife, Amanda Shires, who is an awesome musician in her own right. He credits her, rightly, with saving his life.
@@BourbonCountryReacts dig deep. he has some masterpieces. He is horrible at singing, but wrote some great stuff. They Byrds, Peter, Paul & Mary, Even Garth Brooks have recorded his stuff.
You've introduced me to another song I have never heard before. Something about the style and the message reminds me of "Keep Me In Your Heart" by Warren Zevon.
@@lisacaringello2138 I think the video is emotional because anyone with a broken heart can 100% relate about being hurt and crying on your bathroom floor... BUT the live performance is definitely more personal and emotional because it's just her, her guitar, and the emotions that led to her writing the song... not to mention those in the audience...
Cloths don't normally catch my notice, however I've called out the Yoda shirt and the limp hat. Now I need to mention the beanie... Keith you look like you have some Next Gen or SG1 ears going on, I hope you know what I'm talking about. I've never heard this song, but I really like it. Love a song that makes me think and reflect.
Love the reactions!! Jason is awsome. Would love for yall to cover "The Rain" by remetta think yall might like it. We all come from a metal past. Oh and we love bourbon lol keep it up guys!!
There was story about a beautiful young woman who made a pact with the devil. She didn't want to ever get old. So, of course the devil said, (basically) "Sure Missy, I will trade your soul for your eternal life". She stayed young, while all her family including children, grandchildren etc. grew old and died. As time passed, everyone she made friends with grew old and died. Since she was eternally young, as they aged and she didn't, she would have to leave them because it got too weird and obvious. She would have to watch what she said about her life and what she knew about history. Eventually, she was so unhappy, she told the devil to come and take her because her life was so lonely.
For a great acoustic guitar tone, look up the Rainsong WS1000. It is made of carbon fiber and has a great balance. It plays well for both lead and rhythm work.
Live Oak (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OAs05x28wwM.html) and Elephant (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ClugMhMbrRg.html) are great songs as well
Love this song. If you want to compare it to a vampire movie though, it's closest in spirit to Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive. I've always wondered if Isbell got some inspiration for this from that.
