Please do more of Jason. He is the best of the best. You should check out the following Dress Blue, Alabama Pine, Codeine, Speed Trap Town, Children Of Children and Cover Me Up.
Also white man's world, anxiety, if we were vampires and yvette. There's so many amazing songs of his really. And The Problem by his wife Amanda Shires ft him is brilliant.
Saddest song ever. Breaks my heart every time I hear it. My girlfriend died of cancer three years ago. This character is so much like her. I loved this song back before she passed. Never dreamed that I would live it. Thanks for featuring it, and any other songs of his.
I met Jason on the set of Deadwood when we did the Movie. I didnt now who he was. Earl Brown brought guitars and we sat around singing. Earl and I sang Long Black Veil and He stopped loving her today. Then Jason played a song. And it all got quiet. Then he sang another Then he sang Elephant. I mean I was just floored and I felt like I was sitting there listening to a poet. A word sculptorer. And a damn fine musician. One of my highest moments of my life as a performer.
this song kills me every time. reminds me of my father inlaws losing battle with cancer. devistated my wife and myself but that was 15 years ago and then i heard vampires by jason and i pray to god my wife dies before me. this guy is a musical genius
Appreciate you for sharing. I couldn't even begin to image what that's like. You've definitely peaked my interest with Vampires. I know I need to get to that at some point. But the emotions we ride when we listen to Jason are exactly what makes us human.
Hiya mate. British guy in Texas here. Excited to support your growing channel. Sturgill Simpson - Turtles all the way down, may just impress you if you haven’t heard.
Too many good songs to name by Jason but as a new listener, you’ve gotta do cover me up. Incredible song. Also, flagship is an amazing song that paints one of the clearest picture of a scene I’ve ever heard in music.
The ability to deliver on a song that makes you understand the characters and the journey all within 3 minutes and feel like you've experienced it with them - I think is often undervalued. Props to Mr Isbell!
He’s a brilliant songwriter, one of the finest in many years IMO. I’m still blown away every time I hear Decoration Day, especially when you take into account his young age and the story of Jason’s relationship to the Hills and Lawsons.
Cody Jinks - David is another one like this in that it hits you and makes you just stop. Maybe not as deep as this one but one that gives me chills every time I listen to it
Thx for sharing. If you have a minute come check out my cover of The Lumineers - I'm an indie musician and think you may dig my sound. Really appreciate it!
What I've always taken from this was that the "elephant" wasn't cancer. Andy and the Girl fully recognize her disease and her mortality. The elephant they are trying their best to ignore is that they are IN LOVE with one another. They chose to ignore it because acknowledging it only makes the situation more painful for them both. But the truth has a way of showing itself when either or both of them are venerable. He carries her to bed and sweeps the hair that she is losing off the floor is a wonderful example.
@@folioio if the elephant is cancer or death, they certainly aren't trying to ignore it as the lyric says. It's being dealt with, discussed and acknowledged by the characters on all levels and in just about every verse of this song ;-)
I know...right? I felt the same. As a Cancer/COVID survivor and Nurse for 35 years, I've seen both sides. The "Fuck" reference showed his frustration in dealing with a woman dying of cancer and a family who is probably ignorant or apathetic about the whole thing.
Jason's reference to the Elephant mean's he's referring to her Cancer. I knew you were lost at first but once the meaning becomes clear your eye's tell you know get what this song is about. Don't feel bad as everyone that hears this for the first time does the same thing. When the song ends your speechless. Jason is one hell of a player and not so much a Country guy as he is a Rocker, but when he does things like this no one is ready for what they're about to hear and the feeling just stops you in your tracks and this becomes much more than just your average song. Jason in interviews talks about the song as not something personal but about drunks he used to see at many bars he played at and how they would end up. He just wrote it as it came out.
Half of my family has died of cancer. I can't listen without crying. But I still listen, so amazingly good. I've tried to play it myself but I'm not able to without breaking down. I don't know how he does it.
It’s obvious to me they knew each other and he was attracted to her, But before they became intimate she is as diagnosed with cancer. He still cares about her and this is his story of the situation.
Children of Children (a tribute to his mother), Yvette, Speed Trap Town, Cover Me Up, Overseas, White Man's World. Another amazing band that can tell a story is JJ Grey and Mofro. They are a mix of Southern Swamp Rock and Soul. Start with "The Sun is Shining Down", which is about the last words his grandparents had as his grandmother was rushing his grandfather to the hospital. He died before they got there. Incredibly moving and powerful.
You are absolutely right. I think often after I've watched my reaction back that I don't always catch every part of it. But, I think that's why we often listen to songs over and over, because we always catch something new in them. But I appreciate your heads up! I hope you're enjoying the videos
Fantastic review man. What you said about not wanting to take away what Jason been through - the magic of his ability is that his songs can be personal to anyone, they are real and relatable and honest AF! I heard him say once that after he puts a song out, its no longer his, it belongs to listener. Absolutely the real deal. Your movie analogy is spot on bro. Good stuff
I haven't heard of Ian Noe before. I really liked "Irene" -- will listen to more of his music. His voice put me in mind of Woody and Arlo Guthrie which is definitely a good thing!
Must resist the urge to just send you tune after tune but I'm liking watching yo heading down this rabbit hole, and as stated below, if you've not looked at Sturgill Simpson yet, then very different from Jason, but bloody amazing albums. Maybe more worth listening to Sturgill's whole albums and Jason the individual songs can stand out more
When I saw Jason in concert a few years ago, there was a lady sitting adjacent to me across the aisle who broke down and cried uncontrollably while Jason played this song. You just knew she had lost someone and it made me start crying when he was done she stood up and clapped, then danced and cheered for every other song...
I was a sorta gobsmacked by Jason's message, having dodged a few mammoths myself. Don't you just hate knowing the elephant will prevail? Credit where credit is due, Isbell is a heavyweight.
Late to the party but let me say, that's an amazing reaction. That line "I'd never hear the end of it". I've contemplated that many times and came to the conclusion you did. Not so much what others would say but the fact he'd have this intimate relationship with a person that is now gone. He'd beat himself up about. Great reaction. You earned a subscriber from Jason's tiny little hometown of Greenhill Alabama.
You need to listen to the first verse again. Key lines "I knew she planned to sleep alone, I'd carry her to bed, sweep up the hair from her floor ". They haven't just met. They're old friends. Nice reaction though.
Check out Colter Wall's cover of "Bob Fudge". It is a song that I absolutely cannot stop listening to, it is based on a true story, and the story itself is amazing. I would definitely recommend this song.
not going to lie I have always been cautious about titles with elephant in them since I studied "hills like white elephants" by Hemingway in school. Its never a happy story when there is an elephant in the room.
I haven't heard that yet Courtney! But that is on my list for this week to listen to for sure. I'll let you know what I think of it. Morgan Wallen is currently a favourite of mine!
The 94 Club don’t bother with Colters version, he waters down the lyrics. Which is especially egregious because Jason wrote that song about his wife, who plays on his version.
I hope you did not laugh at the beginning and then feel like an ass like I did.My humble opinion is, this is the best song written in the last ten years.
