Jason is one of the best and you are right about the 'talk me off the roof' bit. It links with his past issues with alcohol addiction. He covers this with 'cover me up' and most recently 'it gets easier'. My person favourite of Jason Isbell is Children of Children which has an amazing guitar solo too.

My favorite tidbit about this song is on the line "the Mercy in your sense of right and wrong" and that Jason and Amanda have a daughter named Mercy.

A favorite of mine from Jason's repertoire! You're right- Jason can turn a phrase better than a great many songwriters today. He truly goes back to the old tradition of songwriting that has more in common with poetry than with turning a quick profit in Nashville. His sincerity and quality has always been what strikes me the most about his work. Loved hearing your take on this one! Check out Jason's "Alabama Pines" or "Last of My Kind," I think you'd like both of them.

Deep review for a deep song. Nice one dude. Top tier indeed. Check out some of his guitar work too. He’s a beast. Oh, and stick with Jason on Cover Me Up. Morgan does a good job, but Jason wrote it and with it brings an emotion only he can. It’s one of his best. Keep doin what you’re doin man! Good stuff

Jason Isbel is a great songwriter, this song is always a reminder to me to be present not just there, with my wife and kids when I get home from work. My favorite Jason Isbel song is something more than free, it keeps me motivated working in the Texas heat.

Love Jason Isbell - as you say his songwriting is superb and his voice is amazing. His wife (singing and playing the fiddle here) is also great. You should check out some of The Highwomen stuff that she does with Brandi Carlile and Maren Morris. Jason plays with them too and he's a kick ass guitar player.

@@JackCerro Yeah, but Gil and Dave haven't been very prolific as of late. This last albums are mostly covers and studio outake stuff. TBH, I think Jason and Amanda are better song writers. On the other side, the best sounding concert I've ever been to was on the Nashville Obsolete tour. You will not find a better harmony performance than Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings out in front of the microphones doing Long Black Veil. My goosebumps had goosebumps.

@@OliWilford I'd recommend watching one of Jason's live versions - especially one where his wife Amanda is playing fiddle with them. Morgan Wallen does a decent cover but for me it lacks the emotional punch and connection of Jason performing it.

Great video brother! Isbel's Last of my Kind is definitely one to look at. You should also check out Morgan Wade's the Night. She has a couple live recordings but I would suggest the OurVinyl session.

Proof once again that big time Nashville does produce some of the finest music around. At least, when an artist such as Jason Isbell is the creative heart, beating human blood and not greasy oil and smoke. Perhaps it's true, seek ye shall find.

Cheers brother. Yes, it's true. But I think the secret to it is, for me... Is when it's a sole songwriter and one at this level speaking from experience... The music is often good. When the Nashville machine puts 5 or 6 songwriters on one song, it becomes more generic.

@@smoothplezing Not really sure how you can say that. Isbell was one of those songwriters for ages. It was how he made money when playing with the Driveby Truckers. Him being able to self release after the recognition of those grammys in 2016 has definitely allowed him a lot more freedom, and it's breat that we get to share that

@@smoothplezing, no disrespect to Jason Isbell was intended. The logistics needed to unleash the truth, love and inspiration of the singer-songwriter so often is lost in scaling up to the masses. Jason is one of many who has had a measure of success. God bless him and all of his brothers and sisters who share their gifts. Babylon is both a blessing and a curse. Lucky me.

@@OliWilford , your point is well taken Pub buddy. Regardless of musical genre, the singer-songwriter-creator is the core of the biscuit. Let us celebrate! On a drunker bar discussion level, Jason for example, collaborated and conspired with the big C Creator, as well as lovers (Amanda Shires icon?), as well as other human and non-human factors in his actual and imagined reality. Nothing can be created but that is within the matrix of the cosmos. Bullshit rules. Love rules.
