Isbell is my favorite artist. I can listen to his catalog over and over! His shows are unbelievable! His sound guy is a rock star. The sound is the best I've ever heard live. I've seen him front row numerous times and it is always fantastic. Every song is so good. From the oldest to the newest album every song is written to perfection. Take a listen to Yevette. No one ever mentions it but such a good song. It's a dark one but all of them have a dark edge to them and make you think. When he wrote Vampires his wife always reads them first and makes suggestions. On that one she wrote "Fuck you" "Done". She also pushed for it to be on the album. Dave Cobb wanted one more to choose from and she kept saying "play the vampire one" Dave I'm sure thought she was crazy. Why would he want a vampire song on the album. Then he heard it and well it made the cut. Relatively Easy is a great one no one talks about also. Sooo good and inspiring to think about. Cause for those of us that are a stones throw away we have had it Relatively Easy. Don't worry about making reactions to them just listen, let his voice and lyrics flow and enjoy.
You can’t go wrong with any of Jason’s songs and you definitely won’t be disappointed with seeing him live! He’s a phenomenal writer!! I’m going to suggest a throwback to one he wrote while he was in the band Drive By Truckers - “Goddamn Lonely Love.
Isbell is a living legend. “Speed Trap Town”, “If It Takes A Lifetime” and “Something More Than Free” It’s a great idea for life. We all know we are all doomed, yet we spend our lives ignoring that “elephant in the room” of one day it all being over.

I saw Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit in Pikeville, Kentucky this time last year. It was hands down the greatest show I’ve ever been to. You can’t beat his songwriting and ability to emote when he sings. I definitely recommend Cover Me Up (he closed the show with that one) and Decoration Day. The guitar work in the latter gives me big Lynyrd Skynyrd vibes.
Well damn. Would have loved to have seen the initial reaction but shit happens! Thanks for the honesty. I guess you could have always just re-recorded it and played along and we would have never known. The song speaks for itself, but glad you enjoyed the bourbon as well. Bourbon World is actually not the store pick that Vine & Table said that bottle was. It said it was The Party Source which is local to me. But either way, it worked out. Now go listen to that thumb drive and enjoy the Isbell rabbit hole. He actually was just at Ruoff with Willie Nelson in June but you're right, small venue is definitely the way to see him.
Great job guys. Isbell is insanely good and easily the best songwriter the world has seen in a generation. He has so many great songs it's almost hard to believe for a man his age. Elephant is a masterpiece pure and simple. The album Southeastern is, in my opinion, the greatest album of the 21st century, any genre. Every single album over the past decade is simply superb. He's my favourite artist on the planet right now. When all is said and done, Isbell may go down as rivalling Dylan as the greatest American songwriter ever...he's that good..

Fly to Tulsa and experience Jason and the 400 Unit at Cain's Ballroom. Especially if Amanda Shires, his wife, is playing her fiddle with his band. She was mentored by Bob Wills (house band for Cain's) fiddler. The synergy is awesome.
If you're going to start working through Isbell... please do "Cover Me Up". Morgan Wallen does it well, but it lacks the emotion. Isbell wrote it for his wife, Amanda Shires, who is also an incredible violen player btw.
I know how you like it so... there is a video of an ACL performance of it. If I'm not mistaken he wrote "If We Were Vampires" for her as well. I think she was the female vocals on the track y'all reviewed.

Hey y'all. I made it through the whole song this morning.. I'm going to share it with my daughters. They're 30 and 22 so certainly old enough for the very adult theme and language. I have no idea how I'm going to introduce it or direct a discussion. They've been ignoring it and me the past year pretty much burying their heads in the sand and hoping it'll just go away. It's not. In your shoes, I'm not sure I could even listen to this song. Forgiven people for just being human. I've had the same best friend though, since 1972. It doesn't get better than that. Only wish I had more time to spend with so of them. Still have to work for a living too. Yay... But now I work from home. Well said, Keith. Time is endless when we're young. When we're not and maybe don't have that much of it left, it becomes out dearest friend and loathsome enemy. Take every opportunity to tell your kids, parents, siblings, cousins, friends that you love them and mean it.
Your reaction to your screw up was hilarious! What a beautiful and haunting song. It is very close to home for me, I purposely keep so busy living that the elephant is in the next room, just peeks in from time to time to remind me that I am terminally ill. I will make sure my affairs are still in order, then get back to living.
re the small venue thing…. dudes he really doesn’t do the solo acoustic thing much anymore….. but he has one of the best touring bands ever to grace the planet. especially Jimbo (bass) and Sadler(lead guitar). his live show is fucking amazing and it rocks. sadler is a killer guitar player and jason himself can really play. wait til you hear that er famous and expensive Les Paul that jason owns ( red eye) through that Klona Centaur that jason also owns. fuck dudes. isbell n 400 are the best band touring in America
and btw i don’t know what you guys consider small venue but during the summer he plays the amphitheaters and big theaters in winter. he ain’t doing basketball stadiums but he sells out the next rung down. he does a yearly week at the Ryman
We consider "small venue" large bars or smaller. Some of those medium and large venues just don't offer the same experience. But I've seen good shows at them recently. Examples, Billy Strings at a medium venue (maybe seated 4k) and caught Tool's last tour in Lucas Oil Stadium. - Keith

I discovered him about 2 years ago and through listening found his wife Amanda Shires . I now listen to their albums all the time except 1 of her older ones I can't find available. I'd like to see y'all's reaction to their music but they are both too good to put off listening . There are some great live concerts of them both together and separately on RU-vid.

@@leslie7976 LOL too true! (fixed it) I messed up when making my list in a 'note' I could copy and paste. Jerry, Mickey, and Jimmy Swaggart (yes THAT Jimmy Swaggart) were all cousins. They lived in 'town', I grew up out in the country! down the road. The amount of musical talent in a 25 mile radius around Ferriday back then was mind blowing. I couldn't carry a tune in a gunny sack though and a triangle was stretching my musical ability.
Just a nice follow up. Went to the Dr on Monday and through an exhausting battery of testing and looks like I'm in remission for awhile longer. I was happier than a guy finding out he was NOT the father on Maury Povich! Until next year, cancer, you cruel mistress.
@@BourbonCountryReacts It is bittersweet. This cancer is incurable and I'm experiencing the best outcome, which is remission for a few years. Time, gentlemen. Time. Tick tock. Tick tock. Since I probably have another 3 or so years before I have to go through treatment again (or not) I'm going to enjoy my family and friends to the full. While I still have to work (buildings don't design themselves) I'm taking it's less seriously and going to invest in my family and friends. My children were blessed with extremely wealthy grandparents ( mine are their only grandchildren) I don't have to worry about them when I'm gone. My ex-in-laws are leaving them more "comfortable" than most of us will get to experience. But they both are hard workers and understand they are blessed beyond what anyone deserves. They also give of themselves and their money to others in need and to organizations they believe in. I'm lucky and blessed to have them.
Damn...just spent the weekend with my best friend. She just found out she has cancer in both her breasts. Wednesday we find out what her options are. Treat or not treat. Just damn!
Gents, this one hits a little too close to home. I have cancer and it's incurable. I get to go to the Dr a week from today to see if I'm staying in remission a little while longer. I'm not a pity whore or woe is me, type of douche nozzle. It's just a fact of life. I tried to watch/listen to it all the way through but just don't have it in me today. That's my reality. So I'm going to ask a favor. If you know someone that's really going through some stuff just reach out and let them know you're thinking about them. Just those simple gestures mean so much and cost so little. Because honestly we're scared and lonely even when others are around. We don't want to admit it. I'm not scared of dying because I've got tremendous faith. But scared of not having enough time to take care of the ones I love and tell them all how much they mean. I'm quite positive most of the time but it's turned my 54 year old body into about 75. It's in my blood and bones. My gratitude to everyone on here for their encouragement.
I don't like this song!😭 Hit too close to home for me. I beat my elephant but others don't, it hurts. I might have beat mine but I find I want to help others fight theirs I have my final reconstruction surgery coming up. I don't like this song it made me cry.

I had the same reaction to the....um, reaction. It's okay. You're not alone. I, too, was lucky enough to tango with the elephant and he's stomped the hell out of my feet. I have multiple myeloma and you can't kill it. It'll go into remission for a few years but within 4 or 5 you're fighting it again. And you already know how hard treatment is. So then you grapple with "do I or don't I?." And those are very personal internal conversations and decisions no one else can make for you. Makes us introspective AH.
