Jason Mengel-Ezra McCandless's Boyfriends Police Interview

Back in the Summer of 2017, 33-year-old Jason Mengel met 19-year-old Ezra McCandless for the first time in the beautiful town of Eau Claire, and they immediately fell in love. Jason admitted that despite their age gap, they just clicked. He further appreciated how Ezra’s youthful energy kept him on his toes as well. With Ezra being “full of surprises,” Jason was “very spur of the moment too,” so they’d actually moved in and started planning for a future together within a few months. “I would call her wife, and she would call me husband,”
On March 22, 2018, a bloody and bruised Wisconsin woman named Ezra McCandless claimed to have just been viciously assaulted by her ex-lover, Alex Woodworth, on an isolated road. However, as the search for Alex only uncovered his body, along with evidence that revealed she was not a victim by any means. In fact, Ezra is a cold-blooded murderer who had plotted against Alex in a twisted attempt to win back Jason Mengel, whom she’d been double-timing for months.
On November 1, 2019, Ezra was found guilty as charged and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 50 years.

One thing that was funny is that everyone was suspicious of Ezra acting out of character the day of the murder…because for the first time in years she paid for her own coffee and left a tip at the coffee shop! Just a small glimpse into who she was! A person who was a selfish mooch who didn’t tip or work for anything! So much in fact that everyone was shocked she actually tipped someone

Good point, I was thinking the same thing. As I listen to him, I think why on earth are you putting up with this toxic drama between two damaged people. I worked with a girl that reminds me of Ezra, she would self destruct and do the weirdest things to incite drama and issues. Then cry and want to be saved, she acted like a fragile wounded bird. On the outside I found it exhausting. It sounds like Ezra is a covert narcissist always the victim.

I don't know why everyone says Jason is "odd". I think he's a caring person, he's a medic and he likes helping people. I would totally be friends with him if I were in his town. He's been through some serious trauma all thanks to an evil sociopath, Ezra who shamelessly took this guy's heart and stepped all over it. Then she murdered someone who was important in people's lives, Alex was really going somewhere in life, unlike Ezra. Alex was depressed, and was suffering internally and she took advantage of him, and took his life all for what? So Jason has had his life turned upside down. Think of all of the hours he had to spend with detectives, and how his life was picked apart in court. I think he's brave and deserves some respect from us.

Jason is a mid 30’s man who hangs out in a coffee house every single day with a bunch of late teen-mid 20’s hipster SJW’s that cry about Trump all of the time (according to his testimony in court) His outfits, his really young friends, his 19 yr old gf he let constantly use and cheat on him…..idk. Im early 40’s and if I were to meet him in my 30’s I’d think he’s kind of a loser. I’d never spend time with a bunch of kids at that age.

Amazing post. We need more people like you on the Internet, and in real life. I do think he’s a little odd. I am a little odd. He certainly comes across as someone who is caring to a fault. But that certainly is not the worst fault to have, and I can certainly relate. If he is “odd” or “weird”….he saw something that was wrong, he spoke up….and that is amazing, emotional intuition that I absolutely respect.
@darkmatter7266
@darkmatter7266 7 месяцев назад
I agree that he deserves some respect and props for being a caring person. Unfortunately his strength is also the catalyst for at least part of these massive problems and the think that he has a blind spot because of his empathy and compassion to the point where it reaches a naivety. I find it odd that he would still love these ppl. The friends he has are horrible usurers and honestly idk if I could be friends w someone who had some young boy fetish. A lot of red flags. I can’t comprehend how someone his age would be oblivious to the creeps he hangs around w. It seems like he’s too selfless and is too concerned about helping others to move forward himself. The loyalty he gives is by no way reciprocated and it is odd that he isn’t aware of this with all of what he has been through. How does someone live with you without knowing their age? That’s odd. I can see it going the other way but younger is a problem. A slurry of things of the sort I wondered. He appears to be more logically inclined and level headed and therefore was treated like the black sheep or third wheel. They treated him like a connector piece. It almost appears he does not react to being slighted. Just his observation of her behavior and the way he talks and all these questions he has about her - these things could have all been confronted but instead he enabled and catered to these folk. It is sad because he seems like a caring and decent person that lacks the awareness that these are “bar”friends at best. He hangs around with a bunch of narcissistic people who are delusional. All this philosophy and they are so small minded stuck in the clique of the same peeps all because of this weird lone kitchy hang-out. He knew that girl was a dumpster fire after a few weeks. I think the best thing he could do is leave that area and gtfo of WI and transfer to another national guard post and stop drinking. Hopefully this was a huge wake up call and I’m glad he survived this terrible person. I wish he would have stopped trying to “figure things out” and just call a spade a spade. He wasted so much energy on these rotten situations trying to be captain save a ho for everyone involved. I think he needs some counseling himself for certain.

@@darkmatter7266 YES!! 👏🏽 Omg I’m so annoyed with these comments so refreshing to see another level headed adult chime in. At some point in life you have to start being rational and logical. If not by 35 then you’re pretty doomed to a life of drama and ridiculousness. It’s called maturing and a huge part of that is not hanging out with kids who can’t even go to a bar legally. I keep going back to the fact that this entire situation from him meeting Ezra, then her meeting Alex, Jason and Alex becoming acquainted through Ezra, her screwing John and then ending Alex’s life wasn’t even 6 months! It starts in mid Sept and ends March 22nd the following year. This talk of deep love and close friendships is so juvenile especially for a man his age. He’s kind of a weirdo too if you ask me. If I ever met him while in my 30’s it would be a hard pass!

I want to remind everyone that JM & EM’s entire relationship spanned less than 6 months. From Sept - March. That is how long he lived with the roommate and EM was living with them even less time than that. He didn’t even know AW at first. He became friends with him (kind of) after EM met him at that bar where he was journaling about cannibalism. Remember she testified that she met AW at the bar and JM got upset they she was talking too long to some random? So good friends? How? They speak of these short relationships like they’re all in high school. Within a few months she cheated on him many times with AW & JH, was living in and out of JM’s house, had an abortion (on Dec 6th, her 20th birthday) and killed AW (in March). Heck I wonder if the baby was even JM’s since she wouldn’t have even been 3 months pregnant. The way EM tells the story in court it sounds like she was with JM for years and AW on and off for a long time. When the reality is it all happened in less than 6 months!!! All of this deep love they talk about in the trial is so ridiculous and juvenile.

His description of what "The Little Prince" is about is very inaccurate and bizarre. Reminds me of how Ezra said on the stand that Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling is a "novel," as well as how inaccurately Ezra described the meaning of the phrase "Love and do what you will."
@soundsforyourmoods
@soundsforyourmoods 7 месяцев назад
I think that's how Ezra described the little prince to him, to support her claims that Alex was a sexual deviant, and Jason never really bothered to look into it. She also claimed that he assaulted her after watching the movie together so she definitely warped the whole plot just to make it make sense
@Winter-Lake
@Winter-Lake 6 месяцев назад
She also claimed that to Alex she was Christ (the Lamb of God), referencing the story of Abraham & Issac. Which, she made so many false claims about Alex and warped and twisted his writings, his perception, his character, that I don't believe he thought of her as Christ, the Lamb of God. It appears that Alex understood, appreciated, admired, respected, and comprehended that story, but Ezra did not.

Pity this guy. When he saw her on the day of the murder, he knew that it was a bad idea for her to be alone with Alex...he saw the rage and hate in her eyes. He went to Alex's apartment and tried to stop it. By chance, the police became involved as well. Alex, Ezra, and the police ignored Mengle's apprehension. Imagine standing there, being laughed at for your concern, watching them drive off...and that memory being there when later you find out that soon afterwards Alex was brutally butchered, dying in agony and fear, and Ezra is in jail awaiting trial as his murderer. And why did she murder Alex? Because she wanted to get Jason back as her boyfriend, something that was never going to happen. "Maybe I missed something. … It, like, slipped through my hands. … I still think about them both, though. … I think about them both so often. … It didn't have to end this way. … You didn't have to hurt all these people". - Jason Mengel

@@OcrilatI agree and I'm a woman. He may have pitied her, but didn't trust her at all. Well, he's an introvert, routine-oriented and calm. Should not impact his ability as a competent medic. I know plenty of others, including my ex who's a top scientist for Raytheon who is just like this - small set of activities he loves and a routine. My ex flew small airplanes as a hobby, but couldn't give directons for crap. So for this guy, in part it is being nervous and having to testify as an introvert. He was too passive to even have a conversation about abortion. He may be pro-choice, but should have (at his age) at least asked her to think it through after examining his own feelings on it even if outcome was the same. He was deeply traumatized as a result which destroyed his bond with her. Not being honest with himself underscores how passive he is. I have a number of rabid pro-c friends, but several chose to keep the child - all decided as a couple. To her, my guess, especially after watching HG Tudor's channel in narcissism for a couple of years, the pregnancy interfered with his undivided attention. He's the one who withdrew after, was disappointed in not being able to stand by her during procedure, slept on the couch. Watching him during trial confirmed my opinion about him.

IMO, Jason thinks he truly cares about Ezra. But, he's a replicant of her father, with whom she had lots of issues around identify, autonomy, power and place. IMO, Jason was a good choice for reliving what was familiar (same age as her father with similar ethos) but setting herself up for immersion in a disempowering relationship. Ezra was a walking target for men who need to express their masculinity through a relationship with a woman, for better or worse.

I find it soo telling that she tried to convince Jason that Alex was a psychopath WHILE she was actively having sex with Alex in an attempt to switch the situation. She already tried using the “I was raped” card to cover her tracks for cheering with John, so she tries to use the “I was manipulated to have sex by a psychopath” card with the Alex situation. I don’t care that she was 20 at the time, she was VERY VERY manipulative, devious, lazy, and cunning. Her parents were even getting her a therapist!

He knew ezra was looking to do something that day he knew her behaviour was off and he was concerned. So much so that he warned the police and they actually spoke with her and Alex in her car. I don't understand why police didn't tell her to make her way home to avoid a conflict. Yes they can't predict the future but Jason told police that day she seemed angry and was wanting to get things of her chest with Alex. Ill never understand why she did this, she blew up her own life before the murder. Being promiscuous, cheating on her boyfriend, starting a fraudulent rape investigation to cover her cheating. All the lies about being assaulted so much so she had no credibility with people. She was pregnant, she was young yes but she and Jason could have had the kids and gotten married or whatever and built a life. Being a young mom with a lack of options like going to uni and missing out on an unattached life which was her reason for termination seems a better future than life in prison. It's obvious to me she was a selfish, reckless pathological liar. She's always the victim. She never takes responsibility for her actions and her rage at Alex was unwarranted. It was all on him, she didn’t accept any responsibility on her part in it. The relationship they had was gross and wrong and she wanted him to say so. What's sad is that he wouldn't because he was still in love with her and she killed him in such a cold blooded manner. She lived in la la. land with her head in the clouds and all her problems should have been taken care of by everyone but her. She exhausted every support system she had because she was so irresponsible. Well I hope she's enjoying being in prison and thinks about her choices and how lucky she actually was. Alex didn't deserve what happened to him simply because she had an issue with the relationship which by then was over. She sought him out no the other way around. She said don’t contact me and he didn’t. Her plan was to kill him and make it seem that he attacked her, poor Ezra is now a victim and Jason will surely save the day and she will get her relationship back. A relationship she destroyed with her lies.

Too bad we don’t have access to all of Alex’s writings. I wonder if the big dog can ferret them out? Whoops, I just now realized two key aspects of her you didn’t mention. One is her incredible stupidity, and I can see why Alex mocked her, but he should have taught her if he were kinder-he WAS a teacher, right? And another example is misunderstanding the therapist. You write your thoughts in a journal and keep it to yourself. “Journal” is not synonymous with “letter.” Another: She completely F-* up on the witness stand trying to explain why she chose the name “McCandless.” You can see her lawyer just dying inside at her stupidity. Geez she had to have attention 24/7 and not just think about things on her own. You need quiet, alone time to think. And super lazy! Couldn’t apply herself to school work and learn something about the way the world works. If you’re not learning, you should be earning. Didn’t budge to get a job to support herself. He had a very good alibi. I believe military reporting after he left Alex’s house. The police officers was there when he left and Alex was unharmed at that point.

I think he’s just super freaked out? He was like that in court except she was like straight staring at him and doing all sorts of weird stuff to throw him off. But honestly dude needs therapy.

Is this the second interview for this guy? This is interesting, because Mengel was the police's prime suspect...at first. Here he seems to be considered a witness and source of information. I know there is a lot of negative views on this guy here...I'm wondering if that's because we are all so used to only seeing police interviews of guilty people that a normal guy, fully cooperating and a witness not a suspect (at this point) just throws us? I wonder how the first interview went, when they considered him the to be the killer. I'm curious to see the cops rule this guy out, more or less by just talking to him.

It does sound like its a second one, but this is all they sent on him.

@@rottweilerinvestigations What's scary to me is how some people who were in the mix here looked at Jason as a bad guy...seemingly from what Ezra was telling them behind the scenes. Ezra told lies to everyone about basically everyone else. And no worries if it's not available. I fully appreciate how tricky getting this stuff is, and what a good job you are doing providing what you can. I just recall some loaded questions being asked by police to Ezra, indicating they suspected Jason of harming Alex. And here we see him exonerated and a source.

@@OcrilatI'd assume it was more that they resented him for bringing her to Raceys into their friend group and buying into her BS for so long, while she blew up their entire friend group and then killed one of them. Not sure if I agree it was his fault, but I do see why they'd be salty or resentful about that.

@@whims6278💯. He STILL believes Alex and John "assaulted" her and I can't even _fathom_ how eyeroll inducing his discussions were with his friends. I mean Alex is _dead_ and Jason's sitting there rattling off bullshit Ezra told him about Alex and it's like it's _gospel._ I'm getting _myself_ pissed off all over again.

Why was she not charged with making a false allegation when the charges against Hansen was dropped. Alex might still be alive today. Police let her off with that and they shouldn't.

fortunately most girls with borderline are great partners! i've dated many and they were all nice and nonabusive. and no, i don't have it. i agree they are more vivid than girls w/o it but that doesn't mean it's always a hassle.

I feel so bad for this guy, He has led such a sheltered life, and dated normal or not dated much at all IDK?! But I'm guessing Ezra is the first narcissist he's met and for him to be in a relationship with one is a B*tch!!! I truly think he loved her. She on the other hand doesn't even love herself. There's no way, Jason can't really believe all these men sexually assaulted her NOW he's had to see the truth. ✔
