What is the jaw jerk reflex text useful for testing? Let's look at the anatomy to better understand what's going on here. We get to look at the neuroanatomy of the trigeminal nerve in a little more detail.

This is the smartest person I've ever listened too, so much info coming out of this video I'd have to watch it a lifetime to understand it

excellent video again Sam, its interesting to see that this reflex is used in eliminating upper motor issues, but when you combine that with increased tone in the limbs and hyper reflexivity of the limb reflexes its nor-t surprising that the combination of both upper and lower motor neurone abnormal responses can confuse a great deal of students, this is why MND is very often misdiagnosed following a diagnosis of exclusion factors. have a good Christmas looking forward to the next one!

I did it but my jaw didn't move is that right

Yes, that is the normal reflex (it is normally absent or weak because the upper motor neurones inhibit the reflex).

Are all doctors expected to memorize material like this?
@SamWebster

Not so much to memorise this, but to understand these concepts, yes.

@@SamWebster that is funny, because most of the time when I see a doctor they are simply prescribing medication with little or no information. That is far from a person who has a deep understanding of all human anatomy and tricks they can use to properly diagnose deep or complex issues without expensive equipment.

@@SamWebster this is the kind of stuff I would only expect a specialist to know if it pertains to their specific field.

@@michaeljordan215 The jaw jerk reflex is rarely used clinically but its on OSCE cranial nerve examination lists. It something students might skip when studying but its not that complicated. It tests upper motor neurone function above the pons.
