This is my personal thought, who ever thought putting a mechanical shark in the open is not the brightest lightbulb, it just disgusts me that it was out to rot, a very valuable item left to be garbage, it should have been in a museum or something around that line and jaws is one of my favorite movie and when I saw this I almost went in tears. Great job, universal.

I Love Bruce. Legendary movie shark. I think other fans would agree that Bruce just has a certain memorable "Look". The blank eyes. The foreboding huge mouth. The trademark Jowls. And its in proportion. All the other sharks (IMO) just have something "Off" about them. Too much gums, too much teeth. Badly aligned Jaws. Bruce is the classic. I thought it was the coolest thing id ever seen when the movie came out.

Late 90s my Dad purchased an awesome Sony Hi8 camera. Early 2000s I wanted the new high quality Sony Digital8 camera going for $1600+, so my Dad bought it and I paid him back through monthly payments. Sold my dirt bike and worked overtime at the movie theater to pay it off. Well worth it! :)

@@the_narthex Because it was shot awfully and looked completely unconvincing, also shooting in clear water is a death sentence for believability when in some shots you can see the wires and the cage below the shark. This makes me weep. I know I'm in the minority, but I love "JAWS: The Revenge". It was, for a long time, the only "JAWS" movie I ever saw (having it on VHS as a kid) and I wore out no less than three copies. This movie was a huge part of my childhood - along with "Return of the Jedi", "Iron Eagle", "The Last Starfighter", "Batman", "The Legend of the Lone Ranger", "Short Circuit II" and "Star Trek V". Every Saturday for as long as I could remember I would grab all of those video tapes, stack them up on one side of me and a pile of snacks on the other and I would watch movies from dawn until I was done. Seeing the shark slowly deteriorate over the years because some moron didn't think enough of it to put it indoors or to bother to clean it once in a while is saddening and infuriating.

Shame on universal. They cant keep anything jaws, almost as if they hated it. For example: They left the jaws props on the beach to rot only to be found and stolen by fans months after. The original ORCA and ORCA 2 Were universal's, Universal Sold ORCA (The original) for some stupid reason for a low price. And now that's gone. And the ORCA 2, they chopped up and threw away because it was starting to "Rust" and receive "Boat rot" "WELL OF CORSE IT GETS BOAT ROT! You do something whats called; Fix it. i understand its hard for a billionaire company, but that's what your supost to do." -Steven Spielberg They sold all remaining sharks from JAWS 1-3, and they sold all jaws props. For some reason, they keep E.T., Back to the future, and more props in a museum, but apparently there is no room for a JAWS Sharktooth in there. Then, they tear down a amazing ride from jaws to replace it with yet ANOTHER harry potter attraction that we dont need. (You could have just redone the original) And now, they dont take care of their jaws robot from here. I am upset at universal for doing this to pieces of history. Like for support.

The worst part about all this is that prop is from a very short and special era of practical special effects in cinema. NOBODY is going to construct a massive animatronic shark for a film ever again. God, that pisses me off so much! I vaguely remember seeing this when I was around 4 or 5 (around '98-'99) and being amazed by it. The Amity Area and Jaws ride were always my favorites and I've been a lifelong fan of the film. That's SUCH a shame and such a waste. At the very fucking least, it should've been put indoors. You can see the difference even between the first two photos that the sun faded all of the colors on the shark and being left out in the Florida rain and humidity really did a number on cracking the material and rotting it away. The inside must've been all rusted. These are film artifacts and it makes me so upset to see people letting them waste away like that. Someone should start a museum for housing and restoration of movie props that would've otherwise wasted away in someone's garage.

I can imagine that they stripped it because the exterior was probably rotting. I'm not exactly sure what it was made of, but lots of materials dry and crack in the sun, or just don't stand up to the elements beyond their original use. Who would make a shark animatronic last 50 years when they only need it for a couple years, max, of shooting? And of course, they needed room for Harry Potter.

Exactly! The shark did look great and so many rag on this one designed by the same guy that designed the original Bruce and actually very similar to molds used in order. I like jaws 4 personally but I get what u are saying...it was shown more and considered faker when in reality it didn't look much different at all. The original wisely hid the shark and used actual shark q around the cage scenes mixed with a mechanical.
@jameskennedy4377
@jameskennedy4377 7 лет назад
Yeah, they linger on the shark for too long in Jaws 4 and that's the problem. If you look at the original, shots of the head are very quick. Even when it's shown for larger periods of time, like in Quint's death and chasing Brody into the cabin, the scenes have many cuts so as soon as you get a clean look, the angle quickly changes or they shift back to the actor. However, that's also part of the reason that the original took so long.
@chadmiller4601
@chadmiller4601 7 лет назад
James Kennedy absolutely! Hey thanks for having some dialogue about this with me after so long...I just caught this video today and knew the shark was just as nice just not protected and hidden as much as the original. People also rag when the Jaws 4 shark would breach up out of the water like the attack on Mario Van Peebles character or when it would breach up at the boat up out of the water but just spend a couple hours watching real great whites breach up several feet out above the water during shark week and I found it cool to actually have the Jaws 4 shark doing that because they do! They don't make roaring sounds when shocked but they do breach! Lol the movie is just one I like! I liked 1,2 and 4., didn't care much for the sea world one.

I love all things Jaws and always have. It was the first book I ever read, as a matter of fact. The other little kids were reading Judy Blume's stuff and I was reading Jaws. As for the shark jumping out of the water, it's all about how you handle it. The shark pretty much does the same thing as it does in Jaws 4 in the original when it crashes down onto the Orca (which happens in the book too) but the audience buys it because Spielberg had handled the rest of the film so well that by that point, he had them in the palm of his hand. Spielberg pretty much said the same thing about why it doesn't matter that a scuba tank wouldn't really explode if you shot it. That's the difference in an excellent storyteller like Spielberg and a mediocre or bad one. I also think that when the shark grabs Jake in Jaws 4, it would have made more sense if the shark had jumped up and crunched Jake and the mast of the boat in his jaws (no pun attended) in one big bite. As it happens in the movie, Jake just falls in, which ruins the entire sequence.

I grew up on Cape Cod in Tea Ticket which is near Falmouth, during the shooting of the original Jaws on Martha's Vineyard. I remember after the filming was over, which was sometime in September of '74, seeing one of the three sharks loaded onto a barge and being tugged across the sound to the Cape on its way to a local scrap yard. They kept them stored in a boathouse in Vineyard Haven during shooting. Once filming ended, word around the Cape was the crew wanted to sink them off shore because they were so corroded and damaged by the frigid salt water that they were not worth shipping back to LA, but local authorities would not issue them permits to do so. So at least one of them ended up getting scrapped on the Cape. Don't know about the other two. I remember being on Bristol Beach and seeing the barge with one shark on it being pulled across from the Vineyard. They left one of the Orca's behind, too. They had two. Don't know where they were docked during filming. Maybe near Edgartown because one ended up being left on an inland beach off Katama Bay and it sat there for a long time. I'm sure it's no longer there. It's funny, though, because I remember being on my dad's Boston whaler and we would go out over to the Vineyard that summer and occasionally saw them filming on the Orca. They were very close to land when filming all those scenes. I get a laugh every time I watch the movie because the barges with all the camera equipment were placed in between the Orca and the beaches of Oaks Bluff where they shot most of the movie. That way the camera's never picked up the shoreline in the shots. All you saw in the background was open ocean. The Cape has a very shallow tidal shelf, so the filming of those Orca scenes that were supposed to take place several miles out on the open ocean were really just 4 hundred yards off shore in shallow water! The magic of the movies, I guess.

I was lucky enough to see the shark as a child before it was whisked away to a dump. I've always been a Jaws fan. I was also lucky enough to see it again in 2009 before it was completely destroyed the next year. As a chil, I didn't really pay much attention. But I'd spotted it in a dump, not exactly intact as the skin had worn and the animatronics were dead. But I touched it's nose and had a private moment with it. I felt sorry it hadn't been maintained to excellent standards. I even went to the extent of giving his nose a kiss goodbye before it was cut up and used for spare parts of something else. RIP JAWS 4 Shark.

I know I would have a heart attack if I saw a real one in the ocean just pray I NEVER EVER will. Great stuff

Totally agree. Back when the JAWS ride was there and we were on it, I remember saying 2 things: that they should add a row of women waterskiers in matching outfits and have the fin following them. And the other thing I said was that, could you imagine how scary it would be to jump in that giant pool with a snorkel mask and see all those mechanical sharks?!😳 Just the thought of it is scary. On a side note, I have pictures of that same shark used in JAWS 4 in that same spot back from 1993. It’s so sad how they just kept it out there in the intense Florida sun, just to rot away to nothing. So sad.

I chatted with one of the workers at the jaws ride back in 2011 and when asked on the jaws IV and jaws III shark they had no clue but on the jaws 2 shark they said universal had them locked up since the 70s they wanted to preserve it. Idk if anyone has any confirmation on it. I'd love to know what happened to the jaws 3 shark
@Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent
Its been a on going Rumor as the very sharks you mentioned could be seen in the original hollywood backlot tours on occasion and you can tell they were different from the ride versions that they had. Apparently the have them locked up to preserve but its unknown if they survived the great backlot fire the destroyed the Kong Ride and some of the backlot years ago. If they do have the Jaws2 shark thats great as its frame is supposedly the one from the original Jaws. The Jaws 3 shark its unlikely to have survived and maybe used only parts of a shark for some scenes or its a scale model. Only way to know is to go through the storage area's of Universal and good luck doing that.
@0532MOET

I didn't think jaws III even had a shark
@Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent
There is or was actually several of the Small Meg also known as Brucetta from Jaws 3. At 35 feet long she is the largest of the Jaws Sharks. Supposedly she's the granddaughter of Bruce the Shark of the original JAWS movie. Given her large size for her type of shark i would say the Bruce line was a variant of a large breed of Great Whites that was either evolving into a shark similar to Megalodon's or were actually smaller evolved Megalodon's that just happened to bear similarities to Great Whites but bore physical differences in facial structure and sheer size. As for Brucetta we have several scenes in the movie that shows a large possibly animatronic or puppet Brucetta swallowing at least one person and eating a few others. At least the final climax of the movie showing her Giant face trying to eat the control occupants and one of her being harrassed by the dolphin squad. There is also at least the model used for the shark outside the control room and during its attack although that one is likely like a ft long or less. However the face and main puppet in one scene would have been impressively large. There is also the Baby shark that was easily 5 feet long and likely was the animatrionic shark used in the underwater scenes just close up.

Ideally it would be neat if they could have kept both of them, Potter and Jaws, but, I guess it would have been far too expensive. Oh, well, things change. It's a new market. Dragon is in, shark is out.

darkprose I totally agree. Jaws served it's time, longer than any other rides at the park.The ride as we know it, wasn't very exciting. Unless of course you're a die-hard fan.I think, just as you said, Out with the old and in with the new. The Wizarding World is amazing... Both Hogsmeade & Diagon Alley...You can just submerge yourself straight into the book. That is every Potterhead's dream.Even though we miss Jaws, they put another bigger and better ride & area in. It most certainly makes up (ride wise and fan-wise) for Jaws leaving.
@darkprose
@darkprose 9 лет назад
Pandora Xavion I only rode it once during one of their Halloween Horror Nights, and I think it worked the best in the dark. It was kind of a technical marvel. I can't complain about Wizarding World, it's gorgeous. When I think of the Jaws ride ending, it reminds me of my mom, who lives in Florida and loves Jaws, but never had the opportunity to ride it. Every time she went to Universal Studios, it was closed for some reason or another! Just bad luck.

Very Late update 2023- I’m happy to report an intelligent person(s) (smarter than Universal; actually anyone is smarter than Universal) bought the shark and donated him to a museum. Took several years of restoration (even took a mold just in case) but all is well. Bruce’s great grandson is alive and well. He’s now retired, spending most time in an LA museum I believe?? Open to public. Thank you to everyone who refurbished this piece of cinema history.
