That's not true whatsoever. Look at all of the players who have led men's college basketball in scoring over the past thirty or forty years. They were mostly mid-major and low-major players who took a bunch of shots. That didn't make them better than the elite players at their positions.
@darchon5
@darchon5 3 месяца назад
@@Zenigundam The NBA has been able to draft underclassmen for those "past thirty or forty years", not the same thing as the WNBA which requires 4 yrs of college or age 22. The best men's players during this time almost never stay long enough to break any all-time records, especially scoring, but the women do. Also, Clark's the only women's player ranked inside the top 100 all-time for both scoring and assists at #1 and #6, except for Ionescu who barely cracks the list for scoring. If people can't even call that "great", then that's on them.

Agree with everyone in this thread, well said. Many/most other top 25 teams have more talent than Iowa, which gets compounded by the fact that players who may declare for the WNBA draft are not allowed to do so unless they've played 4 yrs or are 22+ yrs old - so teams who can get good recruits/transfers can stockpile a bunch of them for years. Clark's Iowa teams have never had any other 5-star recruits and she has only played with 1 4-star and 3 3-star or below starting teammates each year. But teams like S Carolina and LSU, for example, have both had 4 5-star starters and 1 4-star for the past 2 years, at least. And then there's UConn, and in looking at their starters since Bueckers got there 4 yrs ago, they've all been 5-stars, except for Muhl this yr, an international player who doesn't get rated but she's played on club/pro teams in Croatia. This includes 3 national HS players of the yr and many other McDonald's All-Americans, gee must be nice. And btw, I don't see any talking heads ever say that Bueckers isn't great even though she hasn't won a title yet either.

I also forgot to mention that Clark has only had 1 starting teammate each year that has been ranked in the top 100 recruits in their HS classes, which was Warnock at #84, and this year Stuelke who was #45 [edit: I previously incorrectly listed Czinano as a 4-star recruit, but actually she was a 3-star].

Jay Williams with one of the most idiotic takes over semantics smh - he says Clark is the Curry of women's college basketball and "probably the most prolific scorer the game of basketball has ever seen", yet can't even call her "great" yet because of no 'chips. Good Barkley analogy and also the point that college is only 4 yrs vs NBA/WNBA potentially having up to 20+ yrs to win it all. But beyond that, there's also: - Taurasi and Stewart who he brought up and most others who win it all on the women's side have teams that are stocked with talent for years since WNBA prospects have to stay for 4 yrs or until age 22 until they can get drafted, so it isn't just 1 player carrying most of the load the entire season like Clark has to. - Clark has NEVER had a 5-star recruit teammate, and has never had better than 1 4-star & 3 3-star starting teammates in each of her years at Iowa. - This season, Clark's starting teammates include 1 unranked/no-star, and they also lost their 2nd & 3rd leading scorers from last yr while not adding a single recruit or transfer. So the fact that Iowa has been able to remain in the top 5 the entire season so far is a further tribute to Clark.

The championship argument is so lazy. First off, Diana Taurasi was surrounded by 4 & 5 star talent. So was sue Bird. Caitlin could have gone to UConn or SCar or LSU if she wanted to and she’d probably have 2 or 3 natties by now. And guess what, she’d still be putting up the same numbers, and would be considered the greatest ever. Since she plays at Iowa, she is surrounded by mostly 3 star talent (a few 4 stars) and is carrying her team to victories. Plus, she made it to the championship game last year and upset the #1 team in the F4. That has to mean something. Anyway, she is the greatest women’s player and Jay saying she isn’t great yet is ridiculous. What’s he gonna say when she wins multiple WNBA championships? She didn’t win enough? Jays just being contrarian because he feels like someone has to or he just wants to hate.
@darchon5
@darchon5 3 месяца назад
To be more specific, Clark has had no more than 1 4-star starting teammate every year at Iowa. And not only the teams you mentioned, but almost all the women's teams winning titles have had mostly if not all 4 & 5 star starters at least. As an example, Iowa's Final 4 opponents last year both had 4 5-star and 1 4-star starters, and again have the same this yr (even with some different starters).

@@darchon5 Clark is the Larry Bird story. Bird was the greatest player in college at the time (from a small midwestern school surrounded by low level talent) but never got his championship until he played for the Celtics. Then he got 3 rings. There is still an argument he was the greatest college player but it doesn’t really matter because he validated his greatness in the nba. Clark’s path will likely follow suit. I don’t think Iowa will win it all this year but it wouldn’t surprise me to see CC get multiple wnba rings. It’s not crazy to say she is already great, though.

This is a great point that's rarely ever mentioned nowadays when talking about great players, especially by Clark haters. To add to that, it's much easier to form superteams in women's college basketball than men's or the NBA/WNBA, because there's no 1-and-done or salary cap, NIL is running wild. So teams can stock up 5-star recruits who can't get drafted by the WNBA for 4 yrs or until they're 22. And usually, those 5-stars and transfers will go to the traditional powers, not Iowa.

And at least they had some tests on their non-conference schedule: they played #7 twice and #12. But they're not getting the top 1-5 players in the country to play along with her. No one, and I tell you, NO ONE, can elevate an entire team like she has. She's already the greatest. There are so many players to never win a championship. Pistol Pete never even made a NCAA tournament so he’s not considered great. Big surprise super teams win championships. Clark nearly won them a title on her own. Stewart and Taurasi certainly didn’t win on their own. Do we consider Bill Russell the greatest player ever? He won 11 titles. No we don’t consider him the greatest ever but he was great. Jay Williams is religiously dumb though. He’s the one guy they have on every show to play devils advocate.
@owenjones5094

Such an ignorant take by Jay (obviously he’s just saying this for views). I can’t believe nobody pointed out the difference between Stewart and Taurasi winning championships in a UConn dynasty vs Clark trying to win one for Iowa. Caitlin has elevated a historically slightly above average program and accomplished things that have never been done in the history of the program (Iowa had never been to a national title game before last year). If Caitlin leads Iowa to a national title this year, it’s a greater accomplishment than all of Stewart and Taurasi’s championships combined.

This needs to be said. If there was a 3 point line, based on the shot charts Pistol Pete would have averaged between 50 to 55 points a game. The scoring record would have been out of reach. Also notice no one says he was the greatest because he never won a ring. She can't be the greatest without a ring.

By Jay's definition of "great", here are some of many (that almost anyone sane would call great) men's college players who felt short of "greatness" due to Jay's definition, as they didn't win a college national championship: Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Bird, Pete Maravich, KD, Hakeem Olajuwon, Julius Erving...and way too many others to list. To apply this standard to a college player is totally asinine as they have only up to four years to get it done, and there's such a difference among supporting casts among the hundreds of college teams. Caitlin Clark carrying an otherwise average Iowa team to the NCAA final last year was remarkable!
@chashall7573
@chashall7573 3 месяца назад
@chashall7573 0 seconds ago I dislike when people refer to someone as NOT being great just because they lack a championship ring! Most fans could name many “great” players who never won a championship ring. Many fans could also name several players who have been on championship winning teams… who had less than stellar stats that wouldn’t even categorize them as being an “average” player! There is a plethora of things that can make a great player and Caitlin Clark is certainly great! It’s not just her ability as a scorer either. She has a high basketball IQ, demonstrates leadership ability, gets her teammates involved through assists just to name a few. She has a great presence off the floor as well. You can’t call someone a “good” player with all her personal achievements. She’s great… chip, or no chip!

Yup, and not only that, but from what I can see no non-traditional women's college basketball power has won the title in at least the past 30 yrs except for Texas A&M in 2011. But even that team still had 9 top 100 recruits with 4 in the top 30, including #9 and #17. Also, one was a 1st team All-American that season, and 3 ended up being drafted into the WNBA and playing, with a 4th drafted but not making a team. Contrast this with all of Clark's Iowa teams: no 5-star teammates ever, only 1 starter who has ever ranked in the top 100 in their recruiting class - Stuelke only this year (who was ranked #45), and only 1 teammate has been drafted into the WNBA, Czinano, but she didn't make a team.

Williams is exactly right. Iowa was a solid favorite in the national championship game last year, and Caitlin Clark didn't deliver when it mattered. She has Big Ten caliber players around her. Last season, she had one of the better bigs in the country, Czinano, and she still lost to LSU. Unless she does something improbable and takes Iowa to the championship this season, which is doubtful when you look at South Carolina, then her legacy will always be that of a scorer who never won anything in college.
