We are in a different Vietnamese city this time, Da Lat. In part 4 we will continue to cover what it costs and what it is like to live in Vietnam. This time in Da Lat. We will try to answer the question; can a category 1 RIPper (Retiree In Paradise) live well in Vietnam?
Exclusive RetireCheap.Asia membership site - all the REAL life details you need to live in Thailand plus connect with other like-minded people at: goo.gl/M0nMT5
Well I am off finding out. We will see what the upsides and downsides are to living in a Communist country. This video is a little intro and some comments about Vietnam in general and also Da Lat.
Đà Lạt, or Dalat (pop. 209,301 as of 2010, of which about 185,509 are urban inhabitants), is the capital of Lâm Đồng Province in Vietnam. The city is located 1,500 m (4,900 ft) above sea level
The city’s temperate weather stands in contrast to Vietnam's otherwise tropical climate. With its year-round cool weather, Da Lat supplies temperate agriculture products for all over Vietnam.
When Da Lat was part of the French territory of Cochinchina, the French endowed the city with villas and boulevards, and its Swiss charms remain today.
Da Lat's year-round temperate weather, standing in contrast to central & southern Vietnam’s otherwise-tropical climate, has led it to be nicknamed the “City of eternal spring”.

JC, thank you so much for this video - you made it very interesting and you obviously worked hard to give us all the background of the country, as well as the present living conditions. Appreciating that you made the video in 2016, I realise that certain aspects may have changed now, but nevertheless it was very worthwhile. I am a retired British guy and seriously considering moving to Vietnam, probably Da Lat, as soon as I am able to go and explore the country, and evaluate my own personal circumstances. Thank you again for providing such valuable and painstaking information.

OK, as a visitor to VN and someone who entered in HCMC at just after midnight do not unless you don't have a choice do the Visa on Arrival, known as the VOA. The lines as peak hours are horrific and very very slow even at night it took 30 minutes. If you have the time, do a visa by mail or the loose leaf visa by mail. First method you have to mail your passport to the VN embassy, the loos leaf one just a photo copy and you put the loose leaf one in it yourself.

JC I see you concern about why 90% of the bikes just have left mirror. Do you know why?. Back to 2007 if I remember correctly, the government forced people to equip mirrors to enhance safety after they successfully forced them to wear helmets (you know how dangerous it is in the bike in VN right?), and somehow they they think left mirror is enough (maybe because the police wants people to pass each other on the left ask you'd been told in Hoi An). People would never equip mirrors if they did not have to, they hate it alot, but the police will catch them without mirror so that's why we all have left mirror only.

@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 5 лет назад
If you got stopped for some reason it could be misconstrued as some kind of weapon. You have a few choices. One, it might be difficult to get even get it into the country as it might get confiscated. But if you do make it into the country with it then I would not carry it on your person at all times or if it is something like a Swiss Army knife take off the blade for cutting and remove that and leave all the other accessories. Always an option right?

JC, last I read (about a year ago) that Americans, Canadians and I thought Europeans get 30 day visa-free in VN when they arrive? (Like Thailand, Philippines, etc.)
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 8 лет назад
+Jason Hey Jason. It is all quite confusing regarding visa exemptions to Vietnam. In September 2014 the proposed list to extend the visa exemption was shortened to include only Australia, France, Germany, India and the UK. In April 2015 the travel association submitted a proposal to the Government to add Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain, United Kingdom, Brazil, India, Ukraine, Latvia and Estonia to the list of visa exempt nationalities, however the process is expected to take a long time. In May 2015 it was proposed to extend the visa exemption period to 30 days for all countries if they are guaranteed by a travel agency and to add France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, India and Canada to the visa exemption list. Notice no USA! In June 2015 the Vietnam Tourism Association proposed visa-free access for all foreign tourists. It was announced that citizens of the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Spain might be given visa-free access from 1 July 2015 and that citizens of Australia, New Zealand and Canada might be given visa-free access from 1 July 2016. On 18 June 2015, the Prime Minister of Vietnam approved the visa waiver for several European countries. As of 1 July 2015, visitors travelling to Vietnam with passports issued by France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom do not require a visa, subject to certain conditions. This visa waiver is set to expire after one year. BUT!!!!!!!!!!! Vietnam announced last year it will offer US visitors one-year visa to boost investment, tourism and is expected to enter into force in late May or early June.
@3jhoward
@3jhoward 8 лет назад
retirecheapjc Thanks for that info, JC. Yeah, kind of odd that the US wasn't included in the visa-free entry. So much different info on the internet, cause I had read, from multiple sources, about US citizens get the 30 day visa-free entry. Looking forward to that one year visa, though. That's great news!

+alar1967 Nja Trang coming up after Da Lat. Nha Trang is possibly on my list of places to visit if you are fluent in either Chinese or Russian. Geared 100% towards the tourist industry. Weird seeing Russians waiting on tables and mixing drinks. And of course in these types of tourist meccas the foreigners become targets of opportunity. Not a place for a RIPper to retire in my opinion. But I cover it next so stay tuned.

I never liked honking in the USA because my hearing is sensitive, and I cant stand VN honking. I cant wait to get back to peaceful Thailand. I never feel the need to honk my horn here. I just dont do things that would need it. Now if somebody is about to run into me and I notice, i might have honked once for that, but usually I can call out to them, and they usually do that to me anyway.

On the helmets, yes. This country has more thieves than you can imagine. I never met a person that wasnt losing a motorcycle or phone a year, even from within the house gate. And I used to have cheap helmets, and you would be surprised how fast your helmet would be moved from your motorcycle to another one. They just take helmets from each other like its nothing. I was in a small neighborhood looking for a house to rent. I just leave my cheap helmet (roughly $3 worth) hanging on the handle, and go inside. 10 minutes later I go out and its hanging on the motorcycle nearby, and I have to go get it back. Happened twice in 1 year and 2 stolen, before I got extra careful. Now I have a nice helmet and I keep it inside the seat when out of view and always locked up, even my cheap helmet I lock up.

+Monique Vee I have stayed in various parts of Thailand for months at a time in the past, but in July I will be moving back there to get a job and I am thinking of Khon Kean, though I will accept bkk depending on the location. MIght accept some other places, but really depends on the pay. I will spend july exploring to see what I like to focus on, and especially Khon Kean because that gets good reviews from locals and expats for living but also low competition for teaching positions.

You said something about a picture. You mean you need to attach photos to the application? Do you know how many times one can do a 9 onth visa run "back to back" before they get annoyed at you and wont let you back? LOL
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 8 лет назад
+Mrs. Hemminger Yes a photo gets attached to the application form that will be handed to the immigration upon arrival. You get a 3 month visa which gets extended twice in country. At that point you leave and start the process over again. Why would they stop you if you have gotten in no trouble and are spending money? This is always my question regarding the visa policy of Thailand. I do understand though that Thailand tries to cull out those using tourist visas to stay in country and take jobs from Thais.
@mrshemminger
@mrshemminger 8 лет назад
retirecheapjc Your video answered a lot of questions i had even on the history LOL. If i understand correctly, I think one can only put the date out like 30 days ahead right (or something like that i forgot the exact amount) when applying so i guess if one is applying for a "visa/pre approval" they better have their plane ticket done less than a month ahead of time when they apply? Indonesia also will also stop you from entering if you do too many visa runs thats why i was wondering if vietnam has the same "policy" of visa run abuse.
@nonameme7513
@nonameme7513 8 лет назад
+Mrs. Hemminger my visa approval is for arriving aug 2016 more than 80 days out.
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 8 лет назад
+Mrs. Hemminger I think you may have missed the point of my mentioning the date. The dates you submit on the pre-approval letter of you coming and going will be the dates you are given on your visa. So if you arrive after that date you lose those days in the length of stay allowed on the visa. In other words, you are only approved to be in the country for those specific dates you submitted in the pre-approval request. I hope that makes it more clear.
@mrshemminger
@mrshemminger 8 лет назад
retirecheapjc Thanks JC bu t I understand that part. But what i mean is how far out can you "apply". For example lets say I want to go there 3 months from now. Can I put application date for 3 months from now or do they only want an application for like one month out at the latest?

@waltermh111
@waltermh111 8 лет назад
+retirecheapjc You have said that, ia m about to watch your next video, and while the less touristy areas are more friendly, they dont have good medical facilities, and VN already has far less options there than Thailand, and even less education in that area. Then you have the most boring country in Asia. If you are retiring for the simple life, then yes, the country will be fine, but you better want simple, because its cafe culture and it all shuts down by 10 pm, sometimes 9, and theres almost nothing to do in the day time either. You want variety of food outside of the tourist areas? Prepare to pay big for anything except Pho and cheap simple rice dishes.. I have traveled to quite a few small towns and medium cities and never came away impressed or wanting to go back or advise anybody else to go. I will be doing more motorcycle traveling soon, Phan Thiet (Mui Ne), Nha Trang maybe, and Da Lat. Will check out more towns along the way, but its only for a select type of retiring person for sure. I didnt meet many people in these non-touristy towns, but when I tried to, they mostly avoided me, not just out of lack of English, but VN are also the most shy people in Asia, and dang it makes it near impossible to make real friends.

+retirecheapjc oh, dont expect much more niceness there, even from the younger ones. Ironically here the city youth are nicer than the local youth. its the westernization thats made them nicer, as they diverge from the old culture. I have traveled to many places and the rudeness is deep in the culture. The bad customer service doesnt end either. I feel that it will take another 20+ years, at least until the youths children have children to raise, before they relax more and stop treating everything like dog eat dog.
