Khon Kaen ขอนแก่น, is one of the four major cities of Isaan, Thailand. Khon Kaen is a regional center for education, financial institutions, government offices and transportation. Khon Kaen province is the second-largest of the north-eastern provinces of Thailand.
The city is bisected by Mithraphap Road, also known as "Friendship Highway", or "Highway 2", the road linking Bangkok to the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge.
Khon Kaen's winters are dry and very warm. Temperatures rise until April-a very hot month, with an average daily maximum of 36.4 °C (97.5 °F). The rainy season runs from May until October, with heavy rains and somewhat cooler temperatures during the day.
So let’s take a look at whether it is a good place for a RIPper (Retiree In Paradise) to live out their life. Can a RIPper on a Cat. 1 budget have a good life in Khon Kaen? Let’s check it out and see.

Another great production, JC. As I mentioned, I made my initial visit to Thailand this past April. I visited Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai. While there, I decided I want to return ASAP. After watching this series, being a nomad rummaging through villages in Issan sounds like the logical thing to do on my second trip. Eventually I'll hit the beaches on subsequent trips. I'm not suffering that aspect as I live in FL. Thanks for the insight of your experiences.

I have watched your films of thailand before, but after coming from thailand touring in chiang mai, bangkok, and relaxing to think in phuket again. Now your films have really got my interests in the possibility of retirement in years from now of retiring in thailand hopefully either khon kaen or udon thani

+ht3oldnavy Was just in Khon Kaen again. If you are up that far to Udon you should do yourself a favor and see Nong Khai as well.

I always get excited when I see you've uploaded a new video. I can't wait to see where you're visiting this time. At the same time I never want the video to end. This was the same, this was a 30 minute video that went by so fast. Great job again JC, really love it when you go to the markets. I'm always learning new Thai words and I get to see new things each time. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to see the next installment about Khon Kaen.

I feel the same way about his videos and many others. Very true to get a business card from your hotel or guesthouse etc. i always ask the person to speak in the local language on my recording app for taxi drivers, who cannot read.

***** Well sorry to tell you but Chiang Mai might not be what you envision it to be. Because so many feel the way you do it is now over run with tourism. Not the same as the Pattaya/Jomtien area but none the less in my opinion now it is sort of like Disney World on steroids! Just this year 5.6 million Chinese will be visiting Thailand and at least 90% of those will be heading through Chiang Mai during their visit. But you should check it out so you can say you "saw it before" the goose dies that laid the golden egg!

To avoid getting lost in new cities I visit, I always carry a handheld GPS with me and mark the location of my hotel, nearby train and bus stations, and various other important landmarks. Even though my GPS is quite old and does not have maps for any place outside of my home country, it does have a big arrow that points the way towards my destination. With this I never get lost. Oh, and it runs on AA batteries so I always carry spares and do not rely on proprietary chargers. Of course, having a business card for your hotel is a very good idea.
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 9 лет назад
Dexxter Yep that is great if you are on foot or have a motorbike. But for taxis and tuk tuks the card seems to work better than trying to teach them how to read the map! :)

Thanks for representing Isaan. I was in KK about a month before you filmed this. While you were strolling through the market, the camera occasionally caught a glimpse of one of the several high rises that have risen during the past couple of years. The city is quickly emerging to become a cosmopolitan area, For those who would like to spend tine in Thailand studying, check out KKU. I believe that they have a few classes that are taught in English.

I sent you the information that set you up for this entire series on Khon Kaen. You showed up in town and made this series and passed right by my apartment. You didn't even bother to call text or just send an email to tell me you were in town. I only tried to offer you my friendship. You gave me a total stiff arm. I didn't want anything from you but respect. That's why I've waited over 5 years for your reply.

I am 5'9, and found the movie seats in Singapore, were made for shorter people, so I had to leave with my long legs cramping. You have assigned seats, and no eating in the theater, but outside in the snack area.
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 9 лет назад
acajudi100 We have assigned seats as well in Thailand. I am 6'4" and try to get a seat in the aisle row or on an end to allow more room for my legs. The challenge with the narrow rows are when people need to get by I have to stand up!
@acajudi100
@acajudi100 9 лет назад
i stand up anyway JR. Wonderful you are enjoying Thailand. I have an 1800 monthly retirement income, and can live anywhere, but I am spoiled here, shopping for groceries online etc. i was in Bali in 2013 for almost 2 months, and Indid Singapore in 1995, arriving on the day of the Oklahoma bombing. Michael Faye, who they cane give me intrest, since crime and killings are still out of Control here. Stay safe.

thank as i will be moving to thailand in 6 years as i have a thai wife in kanchanaburi you for got to show the BIG C store
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 9 лет назад
Sean Gallinger Hey Sean! Every significantly size city in Thailand has both Big C and Lotus. These don't really make much of a difference for the needs of RIPpers coming over for the first time. The Robinson's and Central Malls take shopping to a new level with Western products and qualities not available at the normal department stores. Not to mention anchor tenants like Tops Supermarket which in a great place to shop for food products you would never find in Big C or Tops. But I got by for about 10 years with only those stores so it is doable if necessary.

Hey JC. Been watching you for years. I got a request. Can you make videos in the Muslim majority provinces in Thailand? Would love to see what life is like there. Also for Muslims like myself it is appealing.
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 9 лет назад
PulseWithLife Unfortunately most of the major Muslim populated cities are in the South where there is unrest, violence and VERY hot. Not places I recommend for the average RIPper
@acajudi100
@acajudi100 9 лет назад
Chiang Mai has Muslim places to eat, and I saw them on here. I am Muslim also.
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 9 лет назад
acajudi100 Every city in Thailand has Muslim businesses including restaurants. But that wasn't what PulseWithLife was requesting.
@PulseWithLife
@PulseWithLife 9 лет назад
Yeah believe me I understand there is a decent amount of Halal restaurants in Thailand (especially BKK). But it would be cool to be in more Muslim community while having the luxury of being in a lay back country like Thailand. I have been to Thailand many times. Experienced the Muslim communities there. In the non Muslim majority parts. Experiencing Islam in Bangkok is awesome. Still a very fond memory when it comes to my personal experiences with Islam. Having said all that. If I had to live in a city like BKK or Chang Mai. With the small Muslim community. That is all good with me.
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 9 лет назад
PulseWithLife Yes within almost all cities there are enclaves of Muslims. Living in one of these neighborhoods would be easy to do. I have always been treated just as kind by all people here. Only as I get further south I find the attitudes start to change. Maybe the intense heat!

@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 9 лет назад
acajudi100 After you live here for quite some time you will realize that most of our Western precautions (laws and regulations) go way beyond what is necessary. In the markets you will see that the butchered meats are iced down to stay at a decent temperature. It is completely normal in the villages to cover the leftovers after dinner to keep insects out and eat them the next day and nobody gets ill. Including this Farang! They have been doing this forever.
@acajudi100
@acajudi100 9 лет назад
I lived winters in Acapulco, so I know about getting ill, but I feel Acapulco made me have an iron stomach. lol i did shop at Sams Club or WalMart, and did visit the open markets, where the local women shopped.

Take a video of your rental, so you are not responsible for earlier damage. I do not like scooters, since I saw the horrible results of a severly damage motocycle, where two brothers were killed in Michiagan, when I was a child.
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 9 лет назад
acajudi100 It is even more dangerous to ride scooters here than in the West. And now most motorcycle rentals have a sheet to detail existing damage before signing the contract so when you return there is a comparison.
@acajudi100
@acajudi100 9 лет назад
Great JC. I watch many Thailand youtubers, but you were my first. I save from 300-500 per month to spend winters in Chiang Mai and Singapore, when the burning season starts, but I read it affects Singapore also. Where do people go during the burning months?
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand 9 лет назад
acajudi100 In many places it is no more than a haze like the bigger cities in the US. It is in the far Northern regions it gets to dangerous levels. I give my members updates every week with real time monitoring levels so they can avoid the cities with biggest health concerns. Since taking over, the junta has instituted changes and enforced the existing laws and accomplished this in years where as the way the system was before it would have taken decades. Maybe they will enforce the existing no burning laws as well.

thanks jc. I had super bad problems with paypal, so I will join your group, once I arrive in Chiang Maion a cash basis. keepup the great videos, and there is always an option. I rather live here, and stay in a warm place,for winter is lasting too long.
