In this video I will show you how to replace a valve cover gasket on a Jeep 4.0. I will be demonstrating on a Jeep Cherokee XJ. This process is also the same for the Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ/WJ and Jeep Wrangler TJ equipped with the 4.0. I will show you how to replace the gasket from start to finish. If you have any other questions that the video doesn't cover make sure to comment below and I would be happy to answer.

good point - this exactly is what I'm going to do. As I already mentioned in my comment, there's always confusion if PCV or CCV valves are installed front/back - in my 1998 4.0 these valves definitely look different from the outside. So what do you have in your valve cover ? Thanks !
@j3ff3ry18
@j3ff3ry18 3 года назад
@JoeVizethum , I agree . those 2 little valve cover inlets - the ccv & pcv suckers , in retrospect & hilariously , were the most stubborn things to remove from my '95 i6 ( xj w/ 390k original milage by me) valve cover of anything I've maintained in the cherokee in all these years. They were overdue for replacement ( the front is ccv / rearmost is pcv ) & had cracked around the base of the 90° angle tube on top so , battling to break it away + leverage it up - WITHOUT dropping any chunks of it into valve cover lest I have a 1hr job become a 5 hr job - took some slow patient work. this is a solid video of this process. Even uses the proper fel-pro gasket set. what may help others w/ aging inline6 4.0l engines is to be very aware that 20-25 yrs of driving & age will yield many of the hose or wiring or vacuum lines dryrotted / brittle / weakened. That means that the same harness loom he removed in video might not be as structurally sound as the video XJs were . I've had tiny planned maintenance sessions that were 1 or 2 hour processes turn into day or week projects when something like that breaks or something. So, analyze your i6 & go thru proposed action steps you'll follow BEFORE you actually do the work can reveal hidden gotchas & save you some unexpected , additional labor. thnks for video of this common maintenance routine!

This is a great video and has helped me decide to do this job at home. Do you have any part ordering info on the aluminum spacers you mentioned? I found the Fel-pro gasket and grommets with trouble but wasn't clear on those aluminum spacers. Thanks.
@OutJeeping

I'm not sure if you can order them, might take some searching. But if you have the old ones and take them out of the old grommets then you should be able to reuse them.

@OutJeeping
@OutJeeping 3 года назад
CCV should be towards the front and PCV towards the rear. CCV has a one way valve that takes gases out of the engine without oil and sends it to the air box to get burned up. PCV does a similar job but is vacuum drawn from the intake manifold.

Nice Video!! One question tho: when i removed my old gasket, the oval shape hole on the gasket was at the rear and the circle shape hole was at the front. I notice that you put the oval shape to the front and the circle shape to the rear of the engine. Was my old gasket on wrong or this doesn’t matter ?
@OutJeeping
@OutJeeping 2 года назад
It shouldn't matter, the holes have a little extra clearance to line it up to the head.

So it doesn't compress the gasket too much and to prevent the bolt from getting swallowed by the grommet.
