This video shows how to swap the drum brakes in an XJ with the 8.25 rear axle to the disc brakes that the KJ came with. This video applies for the ZJ disc brake swap also. Just for the ZJ brakes you need to clearance the inside of the backing plate to fit over the bigger 8.25 axle tubes.
Parts needed:
KJ (or ZJ) rear backing plates
KJ (or ZJ) backing plate mounting studs or 3/8 by 1.5" long grade 8 bolts
KJ (or ZJ) parking brake components
KJ (or ZJ) rear brake pads
KJ (or ZJ) rear brake calipers
KJ (or ZJ) rear rotors
ZJ rear wheel studs (or dana 30 front studs)
ZJ rear caliper brake hoses
ZJ rear disc brake proportioning valve (take the guts out and put in XJ proportioning valve)
Then either modify your factory e-brake cable or search to find correct cable for your XJ year. Different cables work for the different year models.

Did this swap years ago. The stock front xj brake lines are the way to go. You can use the front xj studs also.

hammer and a flat circle punch and some grease is all i used to install my rear bearings just keep it on the outer race, and go in flat so hit in a star pattern :)

Yep, that's how I usually do seals and bearing but after doing it so long it's nice to have the proper tools. Plugs I think I got them for less around $50 or so. So not bad.

This is pretty close to what I needed to know. The rear end went out on my 08 liberty with disks and I found a cheap axle from an 02 liberty with drums. I wanted to know if I could just swap the disks onto the axle with drums. If it works on an older JK then I should be just fine. Well aside from the fact that I HATE messing with 90 weight gear oil. Everything else I found was about installing aftermarket disk brake conversion kits and that does me no friggin good. Thanks a bunch!

Solid video. You included a few unanswered questions of mine especially now that I'm looking at KJ swap instead of ZJ, the more popular of the two. Prop valve is missing but hey, almost 1 stop shop for vid thanks
@DanielPace92
@DanielPace92 5 лет назад
Thanks, yeah I didn't do the proportioning valve since it's fairly easy, just take old guts out and put ZJ guts in. Also the axle is out of the Jeep at the moment. I'll do a update video when it's in when I swap the proportioning valve guts.

Sunsong actually makes pretty much all the brake hoses from what I hear...ac delco, raybestos, napa and whoever else. The other companies just mark up prices because of the name on the box

Hey Ronnie heading up bearings all you need to do is pull the axle almost all the way out let the lip of the actual c clip goes through push it right on the seal and add an angle pry it out like a pry bar comes right out man smooth as silk bearing you need a slide hammer

I did the liberty disk swap, I even put in a HD brake booster to replace my old stock one. It still seems like I have the same braking power. I did forget to change out the spring/valve. Could that small part make the difference if I forgot that part??? Btw I’m trying to stop 35s still feels like stick brakes.

Great info on this video. Was reading about this swap and been wanting to get my parts for it. The. ZJ proportioning valve needed too? Supposedly you didnt have to and could keep your xj but i suppose if youre there at the yard might as well get it if you need it.
@DanielPace92
@DanielPace92 5 лет назад
The reason for the ZJ proportioning valve (at least the guts, spring and plunger) is that the XJ proportioning valve is for rear drums. Rear disc vs drums has a different split on front vs rear braking power. I know people get away without changing either the whole proportioning valve or the guts (I just change the guts), but to have the proper split in braking you really need the ZJ one.

Great tutorial on the swap. Could you not use the proportioning valve from the KJ as well? Or does it need to be from a ZJ? Thanks
@DanielPace92
@DanielPace92 5 лет назад
I believe you could use the KJ valve, I just used the ZJ because that's what I know works.

What was the reasoning for swapping out the wheel studs? I have a 2wd XJ I have been wanting to do this to since I did same conversion (not KJ tho) to my TJ and like it so much better.
@DanielPace92
@DanielPace92 4 года назад
The factory XJ wheel studs are too short one you swap to disc brakes. So you put longer wheel studs in the axle to have more thread engagement with the lug nuts.

Nice video, I'm about to do the same but could not find backing plates with the rubber seal intact for the e-brake cable bracket / pivot thing. Will it work without the rubber thing?
@DanielPace92
@DanielPace92 5 лет назад
It will work, but the rubber boots prevents dirt/grime from getting in the pivot point and seizing up. So you might have to clean the mechanism more often then just service.

@@DanielPace92 Alright thanks for the info. I figured I'd just lube it every one in a while and hope it works out that way.

Do you know if the stock 1998 drum E-Brake cable work on the KJ disc E-Brake?
@DanielPace92
@DanielPace92 4 года назад
Now without modification. I used my factory 2000 cables on my 2000 XJ with the ZJ brakes (basically the same and the KJ) but I had to use a steel cable clamp like you would use to hold a hook on a winch cable after it breaks. I have some pictures in my build thread for my 2000 XJ of what I did over on the cherokee forum.

so I have a 95 ZJ with D35 and disks, I have an 05 KJ with 8.25 and drums. I wonder if I could just un hook all the zj brake stuff, roll the 8.25 under it, and hook the brakes up to it...? doing long arms so the mounts and spring stuff isnt important. any thoughts?
@DanielPace92
@DanielPace92 2 года назад
That shouldn't be an issue, as long as the gear ratios match. The main difference with the ZJ brakes and KJ brakes is the axle diameter but not by much. The 8.25 is larger so the KJ backing plate on the D35 might have slight space in the center around the axle tube. Might not be enough to make a difference and the studs will probably hold the backing plate enough not to move.
@MegaMarclar

@@DanielPace92 I might give it a shot and make a video. My kj was smashed into a concrete wall by the previous owner. I paid 8 cents for it. My zj has a welded d35 and I know it's just a matter of time before it goes. Don't want to put a ton into it bcuz I have a d70 for it down the road, just needs to last through next year

I’m in the middle of this swap. May be a dumb question but what orientation are the backing plates mounted? Because they mount up both ways. Is the end result with the calipers in back of the axle, or in front?
@DanielPace92

The calipers are on the rear side of the axle.

I have a 95 Dakota with 15 inch wheels, would this swap work since Liberty had 16 wheels?
@DanielPace92

It should fit without issue. I have factory Jeep steel wheels - 15", on this axle currently and I have aftermarket aluminum 15" wheels on my other disc brake swapped axle and have never had any rubbing issues.

This specific axle is for one of my trail Jeeps and I actually haven't installed it yet. I do have another Jeep I did the ZJ swap on (pretty much identical to this) and have had the ZJ disc on for over 5 years and gone through a set of pads with no issues.

Any year, they all had options for disc brakes, I think the later years all had disc but I'm not sure. So 2002-2006 with disc, again, it was an option, not standard. And then use ZJ rear brake hoses.

No, the only thing from the Liberty is from the backing plate out (backing plates, rotors, calipers, & parking brake items). The wheel studs are just the dana 30 front studs.

If the wheel cylinder was leaking in there the brake fluid would PREVENT the rust... Just saying...
