1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with 5.2 V8 and automatic transmission. Full info below...
Suspension Info:
Rear is on RE 3.5" XJ front springs. It has the IRO long arm kit with sub frame which allows fixed upper arms to be adjusted and the lowers are adjustable. Rear shocks are Doetsch Tech 8000 Prerunner Series part# 8403 which are 32" extended, 18.7" compressed, 13.3" of travel with integrated bump stops. Rear uses a Rusty's Offroad adjustable track bar. Rear drive shaft is stock with no issues.
The front is on RE 3.5" springs with JKS ACOS, Iron Rock Offroad long arms and IRO 3 piece subframe assembly. This kit has a one piece driver side control arm called the Iron Y which includes both the lower and upper arm in one piece with a caster adjuster. The passenger side uses only a lower control arm, no upper. Front shocks are Doetsch Tech 8000 Prerunner series part# 8421 which are 32" extended, 18.25" compressed, 13.75" of travel. The shocks are mounted to IRO bar pin eliminators. Extended stainless steel brake lines were installed to support the additional lift and flex. Front uses a Rusty's Offroad adjustable track bar with HD frame mount. Front drive shaft is a double cardan u-joint style to replace the OEM CV shaft which broke and also would not have worked with the long arm kit. JKS Quicker Disconnects which are adjustable are used on the front sway bar.
Steering Info:
Iron Rock Offroad OTK, over the knuckle, steering kit. The kit includes a 1.25" solid cold rolled steel tie rod and drag link with 5/8" grade 8 hardware. This required us to drill the steering knuckles on both sides as well as the drop pitman arm with a 5/8" drill bit. The kit is very solid and no steering stabilizer is being used.
Check out my other videos if you want more info on the steering box brace which has been a great addition since I'm running 35x12.50 tires. The steering box was recently replaced with a new one. We've swapped out the drop pitman arm for one that is about 2" shorter than the one we had installed previously because it will work better with my lift and IRO OTK steering kit.
Axle Info:
The front is a Dana 30 with IRO almost alloy Spicer 760x u-joint shafts, Solid diff cover, stock gears, and no lockers. The CV differential yoke has been replaced with a u-joint yoke for the new drive shaft. The axle will soon be rebuilt with 4.88 gears, and Aussie locker. The font axle also has heavy duty Rusty's Offroad lower control arm mounts to replace the bent stock ones.
The rear is a Dana 44 with stock gears and no locker. It will soon be rebuilt with 4.88 gears and Aussie locker.
Tires and Wheels:
35x12.50x15 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlar on OEM 15x7 wheels with 2" wheel spacers.
Jeep also has IRO on board air, Rough Country 9500 lb winch and mounting plate, Taurus 2 speed electric fan and B&M Supercooler.
5.2 V8 Engine Notes:
The motor is finally dry as a bone, leak free thanks to Joel Gonzalez!!! Oil pan was dropped and rear main bearing cap was removed because the two piece rear main seal was leaking. The rear main seal was replaced and a high volume, 25% over stock, Melling oil pump was installed. The pan was resealed with a Fel-Pro one piece gasket. The timing chain had some slack in it so it was replaced along with new timing gears on the crankshaft and camshaft. A new timing cover was installed with a new front seal to replace the original timing cover which had a hole in it. The original harmonic balancer was cleaned up and reinstalled along with the original crankshaft pulley. A new water pump was installed with a new bypass hose to the intake manifold. The thermostat housing was replaced along with a new 185 thermostat and Fel-Pro gasket. A new tensioner was installed because the old one was nasty to say the least. The original broken EVAP canister, damaged by the front driver side tire, has been removed and replaced with a new relocated canister. A new power steering pump was installed.
The motor also has an MSD external coil and K&N intake and air filter.
Muffler was a Flowmaster 40 series cutoff before rear axle, but muffler has now been removed. Exhaust setup from muffler to engine is stock with brand new catalytic converter.
Special Thanks: Thanks to my great friend and mechanic Joel Gonzalez for all of his hard work and dedication to Project ZJ. Thanks to Mario for selling me my first Jeep. Thanks to Nate and Mitchell for the awesome compressor mount. Thanks to Mark and Mike at All Muffler Service for their work on my exhaust and also for removing the stock lower control arm mounts in the front. Thanks to Rob at Les Schwab for all of the great advice and for doing my initial alignment. Thanks to Redline Tire for doing my final alignment and mounting and balancing my new tires. Thanks to all my loyal RU-vid subscribers for their continued support and comments!!!

You put out the best ZJ mod videos I've watched. Actually some of the best videos PERIOD! You're eloquent with a cadence that keeps viewers like me with limited time interested. Your volume is perfect but most of all you provide an impressive product that is technically perfectly explained. I don't subscribe to too much but I will to yours right after I finish this. Keep up the fine work, VERY MOTIVATING!

Matt Cero Thanks a lot for leaving this comment! I've been trying to help others figure all this Jeep stuff out and have also been trying to improve my video quality!

The jeep has come a long way since the beginning! I've done the heat gun thing on the cladding but it doesn't end up looking perfect and you'll still need to re do it in about six months. Good luck on the jeep!

I think I've watched every video of the jeep, and some other vids of yours, but as a 93 5.2 owner I am jealous and could only dream of doing what you've done to it, nice job!!

Thanks for the tip, I'm just afraid anything like that will peel/scrape off when I touch rocks with the bumpers. Haven't messed up the side trim yet haha

I ended up using a heat gun and it came out pretty good but took a while to do everything.

***** have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you watch underneath to see if the track bar is moving at all where it bolts on. sometimes the hole on the axle side gets wallowed out and even if the bolt is tight it will move around and cause some nasty vibrations. i drilled mine out to a larger hole and put a bigger grade 8 bolt in, no problems since

It may get messed up. But the good think about it being a rubberized paint is, just go back over that spot that gets messed up and it will blend right in
@ryan.vision

Jeffery Abernathy Very true. I used black plasti dip on the back on an aquarium and it's pretty cool stuff! I'll see if this heat gun fix lasts. if not, I'll try the grey plasti dip out.

Why not take off front bumper and spray it with Never-Wet White ??? Could be awesome.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
JohnnyDragon25 I'm trying to avoid any painted surfaces on the low side just because I often bump or scrape across rocks. I agree would look great, just would always have to be touching it up.

+solarturkey Are you talking about the relay? It's not very big for a 75amp. Hopefully you didn't think my charcoal canister was a relay hahaha

I can't add a photo but I have a 97 zj that I bin working on and I had the same problem with my bumpers. I went and got satin black paint and first took them off and washed them good and rubbed down with alcohol and then painted them.. turned out really well look like a factory bumper now..
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
Rich Deimler I decided to use a heat gun (worked great!) because I hit my bumpers on rocks a lot so paint or plastidip would rub off all the time. They are finally looking good again, fresh dark gray plastic.
@hillbilly174

Cool deal.. Plastidip is not good at all, but so far I haven't scratched any paint off.. Would be interesting to see how it turned out on video with using the heat gun...

Rich Deimler I couldn't believe it, it was like magic. Night and day right before your eyes. Took a while to do all the plastic trim but well worth it.

Did you end up having to use high speed on the fan for a/c in the hot summer months or did low keep it cool.? Nice work on your rig btw. I have the same jeep and slowly upgrading it. Right now I'm doing the cooling system and like to know how yours worked out
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 6 лет назад
Cooling system is still working out awesome. New water pump, all aluminum radiator, external b&m trans cooler, electric fan, etc. Only one thing happened recently. The motor in the Taurus fan burnt up finally. I had a factory 5.9 fan handy that also needed a motor so I replaced it with a new one and swapped the 5.9 fan in mainly because its shroud covers more of the radiator. When I wired the 5.9 fan I did use high speed this time. Low was always good enough though.

why did you go with the 5.9 coupler and switch ? i thought you had the two speed fan controller .
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
Jimmie Simpson The Taurus fan's high speed ended up eating that fan controller and its 40 amp relays. It actually caused the high speed relay to melt and smoke. Luckily I was doing stuff under the hood when it happened and was able to pull the relay before anything else happened. I had to use pliers because it was so hot you couldn't touch it. It still ran on low after that, but I decided to beef things up with the much larger 75 amp relays from the 5.9 Working perfectly now, and I switched it to run only high speed when the temp switch engages it.

+RYANVISION ANY OTHER TIPS FOR THE 242 SWAP IN A 96 LIMITED, GOING TO PULL PARTS THIS WEEKEND, IF I FIND OTHER ZJS SHOULD I GRAB THE FRONT AND REAR DS?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
Robert W Wouldn't hurt to have extra shafts I guess but if I were you and if you're going from a 249 I'd see if you could find a rear shaft that's an inch or so shorter. My only other advice is try to find a donor vehicle very similar to yours so the input/output shaft lengths aren't an issue.

***** Thanks for getting back to me, I was going to try for a 96-98 zj with a 242 and grab the rear axle. Hoping for a direct swap, as I no longer have my "Joel" or "Nate" lol. Jeeps awesome btw ordering stickers when I get my lift on

do yo u have part numbers for the relays and the sensor im looking to use those with a 2002 wj fan to put in my 95, thank you jeep on!
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
Kyle Cochran Sorry, not seeing part numbers but if you can't find 5.9 relays and sensors you could use any 75 amp relay like a Bosch. eBay sells aluminum radiator house couplers with threaded holes for sensors/switches. You could probably get the temp switch itself from the dealer or any parts store. Good luck!!
