1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with 5.2 V8 and automatic transmission. Full info below...
Suspension Info:
Rear is on RE 3.5" XJ front springs. It has the IRO long arm kit with sub frame which allows fixed upper arms to be adjusted and the lowers are adjustable. Rear shocks are Doetsch Tech 8000 Prerunner Series part# 8403 which are 32" extended, 18.7" compressed, 13.3" of travel with integrated bump stops. Rear uses a Rusty's Offroad adjustable track bar. Rear drive shaft is stock with no issues.
The front is on RE 3.5" springs with JKS ACOS, Iron Rock Offroad long arms and IRO 3 piece subframe assembly. This kit has a one piece driver side control arm called the Iron Y which includes both the lower and upper arm in one piece with a caster adjuster. The passenger side uses only a lower control arm, no upper. Front shocks are Doetsch Tech 8000 Prerunner series part# 8421 which are 32" extended, 18.25" compressed, 13.75" of travel. The shocks are mounted to IRO bar pin eliminators. Extended stainless steel brake lines were installed to support the additional lift and flex. Front uses a Rusty's Offroad adjustable track bar with HD frame mount. Front drive shaft is a double cardan u-joint style to replace the OEM CV shaft which broke and also would not have worked with the long arm kit. JKS Quicker Disconnects which are adjustable are used on the front sway bar.
Steering Info:
Iron Rock Offroad OTK, over the knuckle, steering kit. The kit includes a 1.25" solid cold rolled steel tie rod and drag link with 5/8" grade 8 hardware. This required us to drill the steering knuckles on both sides as well as the drop pitman arm with a 5/8" drill bit. The kit is very solid and no steering stabilizer is being used.
Check out my other videos if you want more info on the steering box brace which has been a great addition since I'm running 35x12.50 tires. The steering box was recently replaced with a new one. We've swapped out the drop pitman arm for one that is about 2" shorter than the one we had installed previously because it will work better with my lift and IRO OTK steering kit.
Axle Info:
The front is a Dana 30 with IRO almost alloy Spicer 760x u-joint shafts, Solid diff cover, stock gears, and no lockers. The CV differential yoke has been replaced with a u-joint yoke for the new drive shaft. The axle will soon be rebuilt with 4.88 gears, and Aussie locker. The font axle also has heavy duty Rusty's Offroad lower control arm mounts to replace the bent stock ones.
The rear is a Dana 44 with stock gears and no locker. It will soon be rebuilt with 4.88 gears and Aussie locker.
Tires and Wheels:
35x12.50x15 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlar on OEM 15x7 wheels with 2" wheel spacers.
Jeep also has IRO on board air, Rough Country 9500 lb winch and mounting plate, Taurus 2 speed electric fan and B&M Supercooler.
5.2 V8 Engine Notes:
The motor is finally dry as a bone, leak free thanks to Joel Gonzalez!!! Oil pan was dropped and rear main bearing cap was removed because the two piece rear main seal was leaking. The rear main seal was replaced and a high volume, 25% over stock, Melling oil pump was installed. The pan was resealed with a Fel-Pro one piece gasket. The timing chain had some slack in it so it was replaced along with new timing gears on the crankshaft and camshaft. A new timing cover was installed with a new front seal to replace the original timing cover which had a hole in it. The original harmonic balancer was cleaned up and reinstalled along with the original crankshaft pulley. A new water pump was installed with a new bypass hose to the intake manifold. The thermostat housing was replaced along with a new 185 thermostat and Fel-Pro gasket. A new tensioner was installed because the old one was nasty to say the least. The original broken EVAP canister, damaged by the front driver side tire, has been removed and replaced with a new relocated canister. A new power steering pump was installed.
The motor also has an MSD external coil and K&N intake and air filter.
Muffler was a Flowmaster 40 series cutoff before rear axle, but muffler has now been removed. Exhaust setup from muffler to engine is stock with brand new catalytic converter.
Special Thanks: Thanks to my great friend and mechanic Joel Gonzalez for all of his hard work and dedication to Project ZJ. Thanks to Mario for selling me my first Jeep. Thanks to Nate and Mitchell for the awesome compressor mount. Thanks to Mark and Mike at All Muffler Service for their work on my exhaust and also for removing the stock lower control arm mounts in the front. Thanks to Rob at Les Schwab for all of the great advice and for doing my initial alignment. Thanks to Redline Tire for doing my final alignment and mounting and balancing my new tires. Thanks to all my loyal RU-vid subscribers for their continued support and comments!!!

Congrats on the 242. I am on my second 242 but who is counting. I have no new videos but My 5.9 now set up is very similar to yours. After My new IRO 7"LA kit dropped the TC lower with that front cross member. I could no longer shift without that crappy z-bar linkage popping out. I went with the Novak cable shift kit. works nice with the 242. also, I run F/R lockers with a Detroit up front.. its nice having a full time 4 HI on the trail. less binding when I don't need all 4 locked up but 2wd is not enough.

Any chance you have a part # on that Novak kit? Easy to install? I'm going to try to get the linkage to work, but I also dropped the xfer case an inch when I did the front long arm install.

***** SK2XZ is the part#. its for either 231 or 242 and made for the ZJ. Uses your existing shift handle. just replace 2 mounts and the cable. pretty easy in about 2 hr. I use the heck out of all 5 positions in that 242 because I have front/rear Detroit/Aussie lockers (Lunchbox). It is one way I can live with full time front locker on the trail. If you go to full time 4hi.it acts like an open diff and itl help with turning the steering wheel around tight spots yet still be more capable then 2wd. when I need all 4 locked together, I kick it up One to Part 4Hi or all the way down to 4lo. smooth and confident I am where I want to be.. the price= 179.$. is up there, its worth it.

Great video... I currently have a 95 ZJ Limited, with 249. I haven't built it up enough to have the amount of issues for had, but I want to swap it for a 242. Here's my question... I see you have a Laredo. I don't know if those have this or not, but my Limited has a center display, or whatever you call it, which shows when you are in 4LOW. It also has all of the warning lights and what not... Do you know of any wiring problems or displays problems i'll run into? Thanks! Love the videos and your rig.

Hey Ryan what’s up? First I am a long time sub and I too have a ZJ, not a sweet as your is for sure but I am getting there. I just finished installing the 242 T-case in my ZJ and tossing the 249, my question is on my output shaft the end has like a dimple in it, almost like a countersink or something they did in making the shaft from factory or something, when I cut my shaft it was solid all the way thru and was wondering if yours was too and if so did you do anything to it? Or if you just left it flat and just cleaned up the edges, let me know if you can and love your channel and your Jeep, keep inspiring people.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 3 года назад
Thanks for hanging with me all these years! I know what you mean about that dimple, and yeah, we just cut it off flat as straight as possible and cleaned up the edges. Later on though, I ended up getting a Tom Woods slip yoke eliminator (SYE) and it was a much better/stronger setup. Cutting the shaft and running slip yoke will get you by for now but you may have some vibrations and it's not as strong. The SYE will really beef things up and make sure everything is perfectly machined/balanced. You would have to get a Tom Woods drive shaft too. Not cheap, but well worth it in the long run if you plan to keep and wheel your rig.

I have a 95 zj limited I just did a 242 swap. I found a 96 zj in the JY with a 242 that had a build date 1 month apart. The 249 was built 95-2 and the 242 was built 95-1. Everything swapped over no shaft swap. I was getting vibrations before at 70. During the swap when I pulled the rear driveshaft and the u-joints cups literally fell to the ground. Fixed that. No more vibration and I’m sure 90 is the top speed of my little red yeep. Everything you said about how it drives after is spot on. Best upgrade so far. I’m also doing the 3103-27cv slip yoke instead of a SYE. Took the front shaft off the donor and having it rebuilt. I know that you don’t have this beast anymore. But uh I’ll meet you at barret lake hahaha

Sounds like your ZJ swap went about as smoothly as my MJ swap!! 88 to 88 was a breeze as well. Glad everything worked out for ya and good call on the SYE. I ended up running a Tom Woods SYE on my 242 and it made things so much smoother/stronger. Cheers!!

on that 242 transfer case u said you had to cut the shaft. could you have used the drive shaft out of your donor 97 without any modification? I also have a 96 zj 5.2 with the 249. i am really intrested in this swap.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
the issue we ran into was the overall length of the 249 was about an inch to inch and a half longer than the 242 so in order to keep the rear drive shaft from bottoming out on the xfer case shaft we cut it. you could also do a slip yoke eliminator

@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 5 лет назад
If you're on stock tire size or only slightly larger it should be OK but even in normal circumstances it's a matter of time until you'll have to have it rebuilt when the viscous coupler fails. You'll know when it's going bad. When that time comes, you can either swap to a 231, 242, or get another 249 and roll the dice again. They're not a bad case other than the VC.

@ryan.vision

Most likely it's just an issue with the linkage between handle and transfer case. Try disconnecting the linkage and seeing if you can shift it into 4wd manually. If so, just adjust or repair/replace the linkage. I use a Novak cable shift which has been great.

Hello, I have a question that has contact with the transfer change. The front axle of my zj 98 with 249 transfer has different spare number than the front axle that brings a zj of 96 with 242 transfer What is the difference between both axes? In fact to my zj 98 with 249 you can put a front axle 52098725 AC 96 with transfer 242. Thank you for helping me with the problem.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 5 лет назад
The front axle shouldn't matter as they're likely both Dana 30 and use the same type of u-joint for the drive shaft. One may be a high pinion and the other a low pinion, not sure why else they'd be different. The main thing you want to make sure of is your new 242 case has the same input shaft length and style as your old 249 otherwise you could have leaks or fitment issues when trying to bolt it to the transmission.

moises sandoval No problems at all, love having 2wd!! The Novak shift cable helped a lot, makes things really smooth going into 4lo and no popping out. The only thing with this was trimming the output shaft to allow full suspension cycle. I'm told going to slip yoke eliminator would have taken care of that as well.

Hey Ryan. I was wondering how well the 242 with the cut external output shaft is doing. I picked up a 242 from a 96 XJ and I am going to put it into my 96 ZJ. This will be my daily driver. With your experience, is the shortened output shaft fine? Or should I look into getting my driveshaft shortened?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 8 лет назад
+DemoFly If I could do it all over again I would have done a new rear shaft and SYE (slip yoke eliminator) when I put the 242 in. I have some vibrations at certain speeds and I'm almost positive it's the output shaft we trimmed by hand. Also make sure you measure everything two or three times to make sure you know exactly how much to trim, if you end up going that route. Yours may not be exactly like mine.

Thank you very much for answering. It is not clear to me what is meant by hi pinion or low pinion. Both axes have gear ratio 3.73 The original axis is twisted and I can buy a Brand New one but it is for transfer 242. The problem is that I do not know if it works, I do not know why the axle has a different part number. Thanks again for your response.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 5 лет назад
As long as the axle appears to have the correct brackets and u joint yoke to bolt to your vehicle and drive shaft then the transfer case should have no issues working with the axle. Not sure where you are getting the axle, but maybe you can compare it with your old one using photos or measurements to make sure it's compatible with your vehicle.

All u have to do is disconnect the blk and connect the red....go to JEEP FORUM for the best write up and thread on THE SWAP that will answer any and all Q ur viewer will have.....second the video was lacking to say the least....keep up the good work

Perfect! Exact info I was looking for and thought you would probably have it and you did. I have a 98 Laredo 4.0 selectrac as my first jeep from a year ago. Just picked up a 97 limited (250.00 with title) from a shop who's customer abandoned it 6 years ago. Its of course got the 249 and I hate it. My question was swapping out a 249 for a 242 WITH the matching drive line from the donar vehicle (which is a 96 laredo I bought for 300.00 with title 144k and a small smash in the fender). You covered my question in the video, which was what are the measurements between the two cases. However, most swaps talk about cracking the cases and putting the 249 input gear into the 242 and re-bolting it back up. I'm trying to avoid cracking the cases, and swapping the 242 WITH any needed parts from the donor vehicle to accomplish the swap. Next Issue I have is the limited with the 249 has a d44a and the donor has a d35. Thoughts? thank you!
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
+rhinogear Measure the shaft that goes into the tranny side, if they are both the same length which I think they would be .840 then you should be good to go. Mine is a 96 and a 97 242 worked perfectly so I think 96-98 use the same input shaft. I would use the D44a, especially if the D35 doesn't have disc brakes. That's what i have and it's been great with 3.73 and limited slip although I will do 4.56 and a locker soon.

+Snow “Snowybkl” Trap It may be as simple as a linkage adjustment. Try getting under the Jeep, unbolting the linkage, and see if you can engage it into 4lo manually. If so, need to adjust or replace the linkage.

@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
+Dan Franzen Are you able to shift the xfer case into all gears manually? Maybe the linkage is keeping it from going into 2wd? If linkage isn't the issue, try reversing a ways after you shift into 2wd, then put it back into drive and see what happens

@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 8 лет назад
Could be the linkage. Try removing the linkage that goes to the shifter handle and see if you can shift it manually. If not, could be an issue with the case but it's usually a linkage issue/adjustment. Also with my 242 I shift in/out of 4lo while rolling forward slowly in Neutral and I shift it hard.

@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 8 лет назад
Initially I was using stock shafts front and rear. I later swapped to U joint shaft up front and XJ or ZJ will work, just check measurements because there are many different lengths out there. For long arms I wanted the longest front shaft I could find. The rig now has Tom Woods custom shafts front and rear. Front is double double cardan (not a typo, double cardan on each end) and rear is 242 HD slip yoke eliminator with custom shaft. You will of course have to swap the front yoke to convert from CV to u joint.

@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 8 лет назад
Try disconnecting the linkage and manually shifting the box to make sure the box is fully functional. The VIC will not be correct until you modify the wiring for a 242. If the box is functional, you can try adjusting the linkage but I ended up using a Novak cable shifter which comes with a special arm for the case and changes the range of motion. You might get lucky with the factory linkage but I didn't.

I don't have a photo and I no longer have a slip yoke. You would have to remove the rear drive shaft and the part that slips out of the front of the rear shaft is the output shaft which we cut. I wouldn't recommend this though. Better to get a slip yoke eliminator kit and new drive shaft.

My Jeep hates making you turns.... It is all of a sudden horrible in the snow also do you know what would cause that?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
clownbow1 Is it a 249 with only all time all wheel, neutral, and 4 lo? If so, your viscous coupler is on its way out.
@clownbow1
@clownbow1 9 лет назад
***** its a 98 5.9 with all the time four wheel drive, neutral and low like you said ... my rear end is grinding so I thought it might have something to do with that but the transfer case thing you mentioned in the video is probably it.... I was already going to change the transfer case so now this will give me another reason to do it.. I'm thinking since I already have to change the rear end I'm going to go with the Ford 8.8 ,do you think that's a good idea?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
clownbow1 A lot of people are really happy with that rear axle and I hear it's a pretty straight forward swap. You won't believe how nice your Jeep feels after you get rid of that 249. Night and day.

Erik Wunsch I'm trying to figure out the best way. We tried to set a GoPro up and just let it run while we worked but turned out the lighting sucked and it wasn't getting what it needed to. I'm gonna try to figure out a better way for future videos though, really trying to improve on this stuff.

I have a 96 with the 5.2 and a 3.5 lift and have some high speed intermittent grinding when I let off the gas. 70 mph foot on the gas no noise, let off and it will grind. my mechanic said it sounded like a transfer case issue. my main question is is yours the 5.2? Yours being a 96 and maybe the V8 as well as mine I would know I would be able to do the same.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 8 лет назад
Most likely you have a 249 transfer case and I'd recommend getting rid of it instead of spending any money on it, if that's the problem. It could also be front or rear differential/gears. Mine is a 96 5.2 and had the 249. Most likely you have the .840 input shaft length so if you can find a 231 or 242 with that same input shaft it should pretty much bolt right up. Then you'll need to adjust your shift linkage and you'll want to look into SYE (slip yoke eliminator).

Stoner Budiez No, unfortunately I didn't have the camera rolling when we removed the 242 from the donor Jeep, or when we removed the 249 from my Jeep. I really wish I had left a GoPro running to capture that.

is the oem drive shaft going to work with the new shorter output shaft?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
Michael Gutierrez The output shaft was actually too long so we trimmed about an inch off. Still lots of engagement with the rear drive shaft, but now it won't bottom out on the output shaft when it slides forward. If that happens it can damage the transfer case.

so im assuming your going to contact tom woods and get a new drive shaft im plaing on buying a 231 from an xj pretty soon and doing the swap but my jeep is my daily driver so i gotta get everything i need before i do it

Don't remove the front shaft unless you have a 96 or newer 249. I've heard it can cause a few issues with the earlier transfer cases.

@elisancere3578
@elisancere3578 6 лет назад
Hey Ryan I hope you can help me . I just finished the swap. Everything went perfectly except my transmission won't shift out of first gear now. I had to take the speed sensor out of my 249 and put it into the 242 could this be my problem?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 6 лет назад
Yes, could be the speed sensor, and did you have to swap the entire speedo gear over? If so, it's plastic, so if it wasn't installed properly it could have stripped out and not be reading speed. I'd pull the speedo gear out and take a look at it to see if it's damaged. If not, may need to check/clean or replace the sensor itself.
