1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with 5.2 V8 and automatic transmission. Full info below...
Suspension Info:
Rear is on RE 3.5" XJ front springs. It has the IRO long arm kit with sub frame which allows fixed upper arms to be adjusted and the lowers are adjustable. Rear shocks are Doetsch Tech 8000 Prerunner Series part# 8403 which are 32" extended, 18.7" compressed, 13.3" of travel with integrated bump stops. Rear uses a Rusty's Offroad adjustable track bar. Rear drive shaft is stock with no issues.
The front is on RE 7.5" XJ front springs with JKS ACOS, Iron Rock Offroad long arms and IRO 3 piece subframe assembly. This kit has a one piece driver side control arm called the Iron Y which includes both the lower and upper arm in one piece with a caster adjuster. The passenger side uses only a lower control arm, no upper. Front shocks are Doetsch Tech 8000 Prerunner series part# 8421 which are 32" extended, 18.25" compressed, 13.75" of travel. The shocks are mounted to IRO bar pin eliminators. Extended stainless steel brake lines were installed to support the additional lift and flex. Front uses a Rusty's Offroad adjustable track bar with HD frame mount. Front drive shaft is a double cardan u-joint style to replace the OEM CV shaft which broke and also would not have worked with the long arm kit. JKS Quicker Disconnects which are adjustable are used on the front sway bar.
Steering Info:
Iron Rock Offroad OTK, over the knuckle, steering kit. The kit includes a 1.25" solid cold rolled steel tie rod and drag link with 5/8" grade 8 hardware. This required us to drill the steering knuckles on both sides as well as the drop pitman arm with a 5/8" drill bit. The kit is very solid and no steering stabilizer is being used.
Check out my other videos if you want more info on the steering box brace which has been a great addition since I'm running 35x12.50 tires. The steering box was recently replaced with a new one. We've swapped out the drop pitman arm for one that is about 2" shorter than the one we had installed previously because it will work better with my lift and IRO OTK steering kit.
Axle Info:
The front is a Dana 30 with IRO almost alloy Spicer 760x u-joint shafts, Solid diff cover, stock gears, and no lockers. The CV differential yoke has been replaced with a u-joint yoke for the new drive shaft. The axle will soon be rebuilt with 4.88 gears, and Aussie locker. The font axle also has heavy duty Rusty's Offroad lower control arm mounts to replace the bent stock ones.
The rear is a Dana 44 with stock gears and no locker. It will soon be rebuilt with 4.88 gears and Aussie locker.
Tires and Wheels:
35x12.50x15 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlar on OEM 15x8 Method Race Wheels with 3.5 backspacing.
Jeep also has IRO on board air, Rough Country 9500 lb winch and mounting plate, Taurus 2 speed electric fan and B&M Supercooler.
5.2 V8 Engine Notes:
The motor is finally dry as a bone, leak free thanks to Joel Gonzalez!!! Oil pan was dropped and rear main bearing cap was removed because the two piece rear main seal was leaking. The rear main seal was replaced and a high volume, 25% over stock, Melling oil pump was installed. The pan was resealed with a Fel-Pro one piece gasket. The timing chain had some slack in it so it was replaced along with new timing gears on the crankshaft and camshaft. A new timing cover was installed with a new front seal to replace the original timing cover which had a hole in it. The original harmonic balancer was cleaned up and reinstalled along with the original crankshaft pulley. A new water pump was installed with a new bypass hose to the intake manifold. The thermostat housing was replaced along with a new 185 thermostat and Fel-Pro gasket. A new tensioner was installed because the old one was nasty to say the least. The original broken EVAP canister, damaged by the front driver side tire, has been removed and replaced with a new relocated canister. A new power steering pump was installed.
The motor also has an MSD external coil and K&N intake and air filter.
Muffler was a Flowmaster 40 series cutoff before rear axle, but muffler has now been removed. Exhaust setup from muffler to engine is stock with brand new catalytic converter.
Special Thanks: Thanks to my great friend and mechanic Joel Gonzalez for all of his hard work and dedication to Project ZJ. Thanks to Mario for selling me my first Jeep. Thanks to Nate and Mitchell for the awesome compressor mount. Thanks to Mark and Mike at All Muffler Service for their work on my exhaust and also for removing the stock lower control arm mounts in the front. Thanks to Rob at Les Schwab for all of the great advice and for doing my initial alignment. Thanks to Redline Tire for doing my final alignment and mounting and balancing my new tires. Thanks to all my loyal RU-vid subscribers for their continued support and comments!!!

Back then I believe I was running just under 14" travel shocks. Eventually ended up on about 7" lift with 15" travel in the rear, 14" in the front.

where to get coil isolators? PICKED UP AN ARB Front bumper and the guy i bought it from had 35 inch with long arms and it put a toll on the Uni-body. Im nervous to put my ZJ in the same situation. if you belive your set up is full proof, i might have to get the same set up. you brought it on yourself bro, your the first Tuber that gave me the courage to follow through with getting my baby, taking the courage to grab her by the Horn (Green Horn) Your my first essential "Teacher" next to my father in law DOUG! I also know that a lot of what you have learned was from your team/group, so shout out to them! You Know You Have A Zj If....you celebrate a .5 increase on MPG on the overhead display!

Stoner Budiez My rear Unibody on my ZJ is highly modified to run my rear bumper and 35 inch spare! I had to do it becuase my bumper, tire, and rear gas tank slider was tearing the tow bolts and rear unibody apart! My rear bumper due to stress also came apart and was renforced!

Ryan how much did you pay in shipping I'm getting the iron rock off road 5.5 l.a. I'm in roseville are their any dealers near by that would have them
@BitcoinSatoshiVision
@BitcoinSatoshiVision 9 лет назад
I'm also located in Roseville, I just bought some rock sliders from IRO Shipping Weight: 85.00 pounds which cost me $120 but i searched around and found a coupon that got me 50% off shipping. Most shops around here just sell Rubicon.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
xXxLokiDriftxXx I don't know of any local shops that carry IRO stuff, it's usually all sold straight from their shop. Shipping isn't cheap because it's heavy stuff but there are coupon codes. I don't think I paid shipping because I worked out a sponsorship discount with them when I bought all my IRO stuff.

Hi- just a quick question- I have a 96 ZJ stock height with iron man fixed control arms, etc regarding the front bump stops and the cups that hold them how is the cup held in? I just ordered 2 new cups as the original ones are rusted and gone/ close to gone and both bump stops are history-- just wondering how the cup it attached at the cup picture shows a hole in the top so either a stud protruding or is it bolted into it??
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 7 лет назад
They slide onto an existing tube and there's a bolt that goes in from the the bottom to hold everything to the Jeep. The metal rings thread onto the ACOS tube which slides over the stock tube. Kinda hard to explain but VERY easy install.

Shane ooo Every setup is different you really won't know until you test drive it afterwards and feel whether or not you have any vibrations. You can visually check the pinion angle or go get a magnetic protractor and measure it.

I did not pay attention to the wj setup. but I like the idea of upgrading them to take advantage of better brakes.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
+zj 5.9 build Yeah, I guess there are two options on the WJ knuckles. Both have the higher steering point, but one has bigger brakes.
@zj5.9build12
@zj5.9build12 9 лет назад
Ryan, why did you ditch the iro steering for the new rough stuff setup?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
+zj 5.9 build I'm about to ditch the ruff stuff one too. I'm going to a high steer knuckle much like the WJ knuckle which gets rid of interaction between the tie rod and drag link because they each will have their own mounting point on the knuckle. This also improves steering angles so no more limitations on flex and also better handling. The IRO kit is a great bolt on kit, I just got to a point where I wanted a custom built setup. My friend is running my old IRO kit and loves it.
@pitblvd
@pitblvd 9 лет назад
Question- what long arm kit can I use with my 249 transfer case? Can it even be done?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
+PitBlvd I used Iron Rock Offroad with my 249 for a while with no issues. They are the best bolt on long arm kits in my opinion. Very strong and flex like crazy with unbeatable subframes.

Thanks man! I called IRO and spoke with Brent.. Guy was super cool.. Cant wait to finally get it installed.. (for a minute there I thought I was limited to short arms)

+RYANVISION Hey Ryan aren't you concerned about blowing the axles with the stock Rear Dana 44a that has very little upgrade ability and the smaller front Dana 30 which sounds pretty beefed for what it is but at the end of the day is still a Dana 30. How long have you had this ZJ? How far have you gone in it? Do you push it to the limits often or is this just a mall crawler? Cause to me an after-market front Dana 30 and stock rear Dana 44a doesn't seem very reliable to me if you plan on running anything bigger then 35's hell i'd probably only run 32" GoodYear MT/R Kevlar's Max if im feeling balzy cause those front Dana 30's man thats sketch.
@OfficialVilky
@OfficialVilky 8 лет назад
Duel Ford 8.8's or Duel Dana 60's is all you would ever need for reliability and after market upgrades. I'm tempted to even say the same with Dana 44's but everyone always says they blow eventually even if you use recommended tire sizes.

Hey Ryan, I need your help again man. My damn zj is throwing a temper tantrum and idk what to do. The cab lights keep turning themselves on waaaay after I shut it off and arm the security system. I've checked to make sure my hatch and all doors are closed but its still killing my battery. I even unhooked my amp, subs, and radio. Any advice would work at this point bro.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
DiRtYJew214 Have you tried messing with the dimmer near the headlight switch? If you slide it all the way up it activates the dome lights. Those control panels have lots of quirks so maybe that could be the cause if you've already checked all the door switches and the hatch switch.
@Wildweston214
@Wildweston214 9 лет назад
***** I tried sliding the dimmer all the way up and turning it on then sliding it down to turn it off but it only turns off for a split second and then I hear a click under my dash by the glovebox and they turn back on. I left the dimmer all the way down and its still doing it. Could the little switch (the ones that shut the dome lights off and buzzer when shut) in 1 of my doors or hatch be messing up?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
DiRtYJew214 Yeah man, I'm thinking it's either a door or the rear lift gate switch that controls the lights. You can try spraying them with some wd40 then open/close them a few times to see if that helps
@shaneooo1240
@shaneooo1240 9 лет назад
Mine was doing the same thing. Pull the rubber boot in driver side door jam back and check the wiring for cracks. If that looks good pull out driver side jam push button by the hinges of the door. I replaced my jam button for about $6 on amazon and cleaned the connector and its working good now. My alarm system is also working again.

Your rear hatch door switch has came loose a bit. You can snug it back into place by taking off the rear panel. There are videos about this I've watched them.

I think they were Rubicon Express but they were kinda soft I ended up on IRO coils front and rear at about 7"

Question for you, as I can't find the answer online. Is the IRO 5.5" and 7" the same kit besides the springs? And, is it worth the extra $1k to spring for the premium kit?
