1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 with 5.2 V8 and automatic transmission. Full info below...
Suspension Info:
Rear is on RE 3.5" XJ front springs. It has the IRO long arm kit with sub frame which allows fixed upper arms to be adjusted and the lowers are adjustable. Rear shocks are Doetsch Tech 8000 Prerunner Series part# 8403 which are 32" extended, 18.7" compressed, 13.3" of travel with integrated bump stops. Rear uses a Rusty's Offroad adjustable track bar. Rear drive shaft is stock with no issues.
The front is on RE 3.5" springs with JKS ACOS, Iron Rock Offroad long arms and IRO 3 piece subframe assembly. This kit has a one piece driver side control arm called the Iron Y which includes both the lower and upper arm in one piece with a caster adjuster. The passenger side uses only a lower control arm, no upper. Front shocks are Doetsch Tech 8000 Prerunner series part# 8421 which are 32" extended, 18.25" compressed, 13.75" of travel. The shocks are mounted to IRO bar pin eliminators. Extended stainless steel brake lines were installed to support the additional lift and flex. Front uses a Rusty's Offroad adjustable track bar with HD frame mount. Front drive shaft is a double cardan u-joint style to replace the OEM CV shaft which broke and also would not have worked with the long arm kit. JKS Quicker Disconnects which are adjustable are used on the front sway bar.
Steering Info:
Iron Rock Offroad OTK, over the knuckle, steering kit. The kit includes a 1.25" solid cold rolled steel tie rod and drag link with 5/8" grade 8 hardware. This required us to drill the steering knuckles on both sides as well as the drop pitman arm with a 5/8" drill bit. The kit is very solid and no steering stabilizer is being used.
Check out my other videos if you want more info on the steering box brace which has been a great addition since I'm running 35x12.50 tires. The steering box was recently replaced with a new one. We've swapped out the drop pitman arm for one that is about 2" shorter than the one we had installed previously because it will work better with my lift and IRO OTK steering kit.
Axle Info:
The front is a Dana 30 with IRO almost alloy Spicer 760x u-joint shafts, Solid diff cover, stock gears, and no lockers. The CV differential yoke has been replaced with a u-joint yoke for the new drive shaft. The axle will soon be rebuilt with 4.88 gears, and Aussie locker. The font axle also has heavy duty Rusty's Offroad lower control arm mounts to replace the bent stock ones.
The rear is a Dana 44 with stock gears and no locker. It will soon be rebuilt with 4.88 gears and Aussie locker.
Tires and Wheels:
35x12.50x15 Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlar on OEM 15x7 wheels with 2" wheel spacers.
Jeep also has IRO on board air, Rough Country 9500 lb winch and mounting plate, Taurus 2 speed electric fan and B&M Supercooler.
5.2 V8 Engine Notes:
The motor is finally dry as a bone, leak free thanks to Joel Gonzalez!!! Oil pan was dropped and rear main bearing cap was removed because the two piece rear main seal was leaking. The rear main seal was replaced and a high volume, 25% over stock, Melling oil pump was installed. The pan was resealed with a Fel-Pro one piece gasket. The timing chain had some slack in it so it was replaced along with new timing gears on the crankshaft and camshaft. A new timing cover was installed with a new front seal to replace the original timing cover which had a hole in it. The original harmonic balancer was cleaned up and reinstalled along with the original crankshaft pulley. A new water pump was installed with a new bypass hose to the intake manifold. The thermostat housing was replaced along with a new 185 thermostat and Fel-Pro gasket. A new tensioner was installed because the old one was nasty to say the least. The original broken EVAP canister, damaged by the front driver side tire, has been removed and replaced with a new relocated canister. A new power steering pump was installed.
The motor also has an MSD external coil and K&N intake and air filter.
Muffler was a Flowmaster 40 series cutoff before rear axle, but muffler has now been removed. Exhaust setup from muffler to engine is stock with brand new catalytic converter.
Special Thanks: Thanks to my great friend and mechanic Joel Gonzalez for all of his hard work and dedication to Project ZJ. Thanks to Mario for selling me my first Jeep. Thanks to Nate and Mitchell for the awesome compressor mount. Thanks to Mark and Mike at All Muffler Service for their work on my exhaust and also for removing the stock lower control arm mounts in the front. Thanks to Rob at Les Schwab for all of the great advice and for doing my initial alignment. Thanks to Redline Tire for doing my final alignment and mounting and balancing my new tires. Thanks to all my loyal RU-vid subscribers for their continued support and comments!!!

Why haven't you gone with a sye kit yet? I was talking to zak at iron rock and he said its a must when going over 5.5 inch lift. I have the same kit as you but I'm at 5.5 lift. Just installed 35" and I have 2" spacers on the way, but I'm afraid of putting them on. What's your thoughts

@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
yeahok115sure It's a really good thing to do and I'll do it eventually, but I've had no issues so far so I've been focusing on other problem areas for now. Drive train has been pretty solid so far.

Hey man I'm curious about something. When you did your tcase swap, I'm assuming you swapped your axle shafts to u joint style? Instead of the cv boots? I gotta swap mine and I was wondering if you have any ideas. Thanks, Dustin

Hey bud your ZJ is an inspiration and your vids are awesome thanks for doing them. I have a 95' gc limited 5.2L ZJ on stock tires (28's I think)(plan on going to 35's). This is just my toy I've had for a while so it just sits but I finally have time to start the project. As of now I'm starting pretty much where you started three years ago. I got the RE 4.5 short arm kit with shocks. Eventually I plan on converting to long arms But for the time being, I wanna add some height to it and I really need to fix the steering. I had some 2" rubber spacers but the guy who installed this new kit said it would have messed up my jeep? Can't remember exactly what he said but he didn't put the spacers. So now I've watched some of your first vids, I see spacers are okay? I'm wondering since I wanna add height but the steering's high priority. Should I first put the height on it by putting the 2" rubber spacers or buying some new adjustable spacers and then trimming up the fenders to replace the 28's with 35's BEFORE I address the steering to save myself from doing more work in the end or do you have other suggestions?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
Alex Harvey-Villafuerte You can do 35s on 4.5 inches as long as your lower control arms are adjustable in the rear. You will need to trim the front fenders and run wheel spacers. Do not run 2" donut lift, you'll be happier on 4.5 all spring. Stay with that setup till you go long arm, then get your lift closer to 6.5 and again try to do it with springs, not donuts. IRO has an awesome over the knuckle steering kit that bolts right on and handles great with or without long arms.

Alex Harvey-Villafuerte If you don't want to run wheel spacers, get some wheels with 3.5 backspacing

is that light bar in your field of view? Also does it reflect off of your hood into your eyes?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
Tali Weinstein It works like a sun visor, I kind of like it. My other car has a big strip of tint so I'm used to it. It does light up the hood but the glare isn't bad. You have to dial in the angle just right otherwise windshield glare can be bad, especially if dusty.

Awesome video as always!!! Can you guys help me with something? I'm swapping out my entire front suspension....gears got destroyed and picked up a complete axle assembly for like 250. Never did a swap, wondering if there is anyone that can lay it all out as to what i need and am in store for... ***** bleepinjeep

Glad to finally see you get a aftermarket front bumper started. I'm in the process of fabricating my own. I'm currently building a 44a to swap in to replace my 35 and have a set of alloy USA chrome molly shafts to throw at it as well. Do.you have plans to do a rear bumper or clock the transfer case?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
David Pepiton Stay tuned for updates because the front bumper is almost done now!! Rear bumper with tire carrier and spare fuel is next. What do you mean clock the xfer case? I swapped to a 242 from a 249 a while back if that's what you're asking.
@davidpepiton1187
@davidpepiton1187 9 лет назад
***** clocking the transfer case is done to gain additional ground clearance there are many threads about it on several jeep forums most that do it are xj's and ZJ's. IRO sales the clocking jig that can be used. www.ironrockoffroad.com/10644.html Works great and gives extra ground clearance were it's needed. Works better for lower center of gravity builds like I am doing. I will have a 3.5 inch long are lift with 35s and eventually 37s.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
Oh gotcha, my transfer case is actually dropped 1 inch with the IRO front subframe for better pinion angles and it has an IRO belly skid protecting it. I just bash the skid onto rocks and grind it across if I need to haha

I've been following this build. I've had a couple xjs, but am about to pick up a low mileage 98 zj. My question is with your lift set up and not running the rear sway bar. How does it ride as a daily driver, highway speeds etc?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
dunmoyer260 With no rear sway it will ride fine, especially if not lifted very high, but if you don't want excessive sway you'll want to run the front sway bar on the street. I currently run no sway bars at all but I have stiffer spring rate and am used to the body roll which can be HUGE on some slow sharp turns. Eventually I will get AntiRock sway bars so I never have to disconnect them but control body roll better.
@dunmoyer260
@dunmoyer260 9 лет назад
Thanks for the info. I believe im ether going to piece together my lift like yours or just buy the 7" long arm.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
dunmoyer260 At 7" you will have significant body roll without sway bars. Drivable, yes.. safe, not really.

+Adam Doney (96xjadam) This one is specifically for a D44A that comes on some ZJ/WJ so make sure you don't have a different Dana 44 because they use different covers.

@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 9 лет назад
rhinogear I don't see a problem as long as the truss goes over the tube clamps.

I was looking thru your video's and I didn't see any thing about if you were running lockers. Any Lockers front or rear?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 8 лет назад
+djarizona Right now 3.73 limited slip rear, open front. The rear LSD works great offroad, I've been lucky to have a working one which seems to be always locked in the dirt/rocks. Currently building 1 ton axles which will both be locked with 5.13 gears. Dana 60 high pinion kingpin front, GM 14 bolt rear.
