JEEP ZJ RKE FOB MISSION - HOW TO PROGRAM YOUR 1993-1998 GRAND CHEROKEE KEYS

Just acquired my third 'new' ZJ [a '96 213,000 miles], which came with both original RKE fobs... neither working [even with fresh batteries]. Before biting the bullet and acquiring/reprogramming replacement fobs, I took a shot in the dark and [very carefully and ever so slightly] bent upward the four battery contact tabs on the circuit board and two contact tabs that protrude from along side the batteries. Bingo! Both RKE fobs working perfectly now. Interestingly, these fobs have two batteries, and trial-and-error [and a wee bit of deduction] suggests that one battery powers the lock switch and one battery powers the unlock switch. So, after performing a slight tab bend, if you get only 'lock' or 'unlock' to operate, but not the other, try slightly increasing the bend just a bit and see if you get both to function. Good luck!

Haha, that white zj looks identical to the one my grandpa has currently. But man, really like that 93, nothing like those 93 to 95's. My grandpa also had one of them, ( he's had a lot of jeeps over the years ) it was a red 1995 Grand Cherokee Laredo, and I always liked it. He sold it like 7 or 8 years ago, I know a few years ago he talked to the guy that he sold it to and he's very happy with it. He said it's one of the best cars he has ever owned, so I'm glad it went to someone who enjoys it. If your neighbor ever sells that '93 you should get it and fix it up, even if your wife does kill you 😂😂. But good video on those key fobs, never knew you had to take them to the dealership, or that the radio waves were owned by the government lol.

Yea, when I finally bought fobs for my 97, I had to go to the dealership about a year ago. They only charged me $15 so it wasn't bad.Since they're aftermarket fobs they don't flash the lights horn beeps though.👍🏻👍🏻

1997 XJ had the plastic dome without the IR lens if you didn’t have the full overhead console and then in 98 it was moved to the interior light where it stayed until the end of the XJ. The 97 version of keyless board didn’t have horn beep capability but the later revision did and was a direct swap if you wanted the newer board.

Hey Dan, off topic, have u ever done ball joints on the zj? Also if so do u know the Oem # or what would u use if not available? I used moog, and in 1000 miles the upper ball joint now has play in it. Not looking forward to doing this again. Help.

I have a 98 xj with that module in the overhead light. took key fobs to the dealership to be programed. didn't work. they didn't know why but did see that apparently the prior owner replaced the passenger door lock/window module with a zj one. what should i do?

You can also call around to local independent shops because some might have a drb3. The independent shop I work at has all the factory scan tools for the big 3 American companies.

Dan, any idea if there is a similar dorman product that works with the XJ? have you tried this on the XJ with the one you bought and used in the video? amazon says it wont work, but just curious if you had tried or not or found another option for XJ?

hi I have a zj from 1997 and my alarm and immobilizer activated after incorrect handling. I no longer have the keyfob and I am therefore stuck. is there another solution? or do I have to go through jeep to buy a new fob and have it programmed with my zj? :( it annoys me !

In regards to the horn feature on the wj, you should also be able to turn it on/off from the overhead. I didn't know that about the key fob though 👍

this works on 96 and up 93 to 95 used light not radio waves so no transmitter newer than 1996 will work on a 93 to 95. just went through this to get one for my 95

I picked a bad time to learn that the passenger side door lock goes to my key fob. I already replaced the door panels with the ones from the junkyard and throughout the old door panels about a month ago.

Hi Dan, any advice on my remotes they seem to work ok but are very unresponsive at times. Sometimes it takes several tries within a few feet to get them to function. PS new batteries have no effect. Thanks!

Man I don’t know if you’re still having trouble with your Check Gas Cap light on your Commander but there’s an ESIM under the Jeep near the gas tank that’s more than likely the problem. I’ve replaced several of them and they are fairly inexpensive so tell your mechanic to look into that.

Been needing to get my 02wj key fob done just don't have the extra money for it.

I was able to use my launch X431 padv scan tool to program remotes On 97 jeep grand Cherokee they use RKE through vehicle theft module Not all scan tools can do it FYI

well you can get a dbr3 scan tool on ebay but people who are selling them are selling them from 500- several thousand dollars and it's a joke to me because it's basically worthless unless you drive anything that age

I own a 2001 XJ with 80k miles. A 96 with 110k miles. A 99 2 door with 87k miles. A 2001 with 180k and a parts jeep. That's just my xj collection. I wanted to do a collaboration. Had that same issue when I had my 98 ZJ back in the day, Jeep dealer was the only one with the DRB ended up just going aftermarket and added auto start. My XJ recently the fob stopped working so I ordered a used set with the module from ebay, what's weird is the module looked a little different than my original, the range is much less I mean like I need to be standing next to the car, the original one has like a short (like 3" long) metal wire soldered on to the circuit board almost like an antenna, I use to be able to unlock the car from across the street, oh well Jeep my life.
