I just came back from watching this and it was amazing. The music and acting performances were superb! I feel that this film will be underrated and will be passed on by many, which is a shame. Great film, couldn't recommend it more.

I never cease to be surprised with how well Grace manages to separate her feeling about the movie and give a breakdown of of what she sees as working for and against the movie for us as a possible audience and how the movie fits with it's genre(s).

Beyond The Trailer I'll be very fascinated as to what your thoughts are on these plot changes, Grace. I performed in Into The Woods in my senior year of high school, and we definitely had to make few minor changes to make the show more audience friendly because we knew a lot of kids would see the show for the fairytale characters. All the essential elements we kept though, because Into The Woods is definitely a much more family friendly story overall than, say, Rent. Personally I'm fine with most of the changes, because even though some of them are big, like the situation involving Rapunzel, I don't think they'll hurt the overall story (I'm not sure how familiar you are with the whole show, so I don't want to ruin it for you if you want to be surprised). The good thing is that overall, at least Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine (the original songwriter and book writer respectively) are heavily involved with the film. I think it's always good to have playwrights or composers involvement in a film adaptation of a stage work if they're still alive. While I'm sure they're probably going to make this film version as family friendly as possible, I don't think they'll cut out the major dark elements overall, because as Disney has proven time and time again, they're never afraid to go there with dark and frightening material.
@dylanflynn9895

Beyond The Trailer I am not happy with the changes. Into the woods is a very dark musical with a dark ending. He said that characters will have different fates. SPOILERS- the bakers wife is killed by being crushed by a tree that was knocked over by the giants wife [the main villian. besides the witch] and the witch dies. typical disney sugarcoating everything
@alexmeyer5260
@alexmeyer5260 10 лет назад
I'm willing to bet that the Baker's Wife still dies, as her death serves as an important part of the Baker's development as a character. Of course, in the show, Rapunzel's death leads to the songs Your Fault & Last Midnight, where the Witch technically dies too. However, Stephen Sondheim has said that new songs have been written for the Witch to sing, so I think that'll take care of the problem there. Of course, we'll have to wait until the final product hits theaters before we can truly judge. The Harry Potter films left out a lot of stuff from the books completely, or several events were changed around in terms of characters, but that didn't hurt the films too much, in my opinion. I still think and hope this film version of Into The Woods will have the same bittersweet tone of the ending that the original musical did. Disney hasn't been afraid to be dark or bittersweet before, so let's hope that not all the dark elements of the show are cut. I don't think they will be.
@alexmeyer5260

So remember Dylan, nothing's been said about the Baker's wife. It's Rapunzel that won't die in this film.

@alexmeyer5260

I really liked this movie. I can't say I absolutely loved it because while I thought the production design and costumes looked great and the singing was phenomenal, I thought the script didn't always tie together the dialogue and the songs well. Plus, there were several unexplained and underdeveloped elements, like Frankie Valli's daughter wanting to be a singer herself. That literally came out of nowhere!!! I'd give this overall a 7 out of 10. It's good, but it's not up to par, in my opinion, of other movies like Ray, Walk The Line and Dreamgirls. Those had much tighter scripts that better balanced the dialogue and songs.

Great review! I thought the same way about the cautionary tale and how Eastwood handles the genre of musical biopics. I also liked how he showed it's not all emotion, there are business deals to be made as well, and that's something that movies like "Ray" and "Walk the Line" miss out on a little bit. I was pleasantly surprised on how relevant this movie was actually! The only thing I disagree with was Vincent Piazza; he was my favorite character, and I thought his rants and raves were spot on and deserve recognition.

Watched this film tonight. Glad I caught it, cause the music and the vocal harmonies are divine. I know the film is only just over 2 hours, but for me, unfortunately, it seemed to drag quite a lot in the middle, it seemed to have a massive lull. Saying that, I did enjoy it, and would definitely buy it on DVD!

I liked this a lot. Some of the time jumps were kind of awkward, but the performances were all good and the music, of course, was great. Overall it was an interesting look at the rise to fame mixed with some crime elements. I was happy to see Detroit get a shout-out late in the film. I've been to a wedding at the Roostertail, where Frankie has his comeback performance in the film, so that was fun to see. Now, a report from the target audience: My Mom. She actually saw the Four Seasons when she was young, and gets a kick out of seeing Frankie Valli now, selling music collections on late-night TV. She LOVED the movie. It made her cry at the end. So THANK YOU Mr. Eastwood for making a movie that was so touching for a long-time fan. Beyond The Trailer

Grace, I don't think this film suffered from bad advertising. I think it is suffering from bad timing. It should have been released fifteen to thirty years ago before the Four Season's fans started dying off.

I didn't see the stage musical, but yesterday I saw the movie and loved it. Your review of this movie is great. You can capture the close up of the characters and interactions. I don't think you would waste you money on it. You don't have to be of a certain age to enjoy it after all the style of music returned with movies like "Grease" and "Dirty Dancing" Enjoy!

Eventhought I'm always interest in play to movie adaptations I wasn't really interested in this because like you said the ads for it weren't great. But thanks to this review I'm interested now! A good look at how the entretainment industry works sounds very interesting to me! I love this kind of behind the scenes flicks and don't mind musicals at all!

Grace, My brother and I saw the movie, were in our 20's, never saw the stage show, but we grew up listening to the Four Seasons. I liked it, the musical bits were good, thought the story was a little mish-mashed, well maybe a lot of it, but still had a good time with it. Interestingly though, our theater was packed, but it was really a lot older demographic, much older. So I wonder how that will play out with the movies success (financially). :-)

The musical part is great but they act like they're on a broadway show. So much overacting (needed on stage for the audience in the back not needed on film). Plus the film is very boring, very disappointing considering the the source material. I so wanted to like this film :(

Wait. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons? A musical group from the 1960's? Before the explosion of rock music and bands/singers that left a lasting impression on the music scene and American culture? Who is the audience for this? The geriatric audience who remembers when "music was music"? What modern filmgoer cares about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons? I'm passing on this one, big time.

My mom is one of those older fans, and this movie got her to make the extra effort to get out and see it in a theater. And she cried at the end. No one is expecting this to do Transformers numbers, but for that target audience, it's great.

i don't like musicals either but this has amazing music you know its not like high school musical which no disrespect but there's a reason why the four seasons were such a hit, anyways this movie transported me back to the 50's for a while and i truly enjoyed it i wanted to sing along !!!

What a farce. How can any 'legitimate' film critic review a movie without seeing the stage production? Especially, since the stage production is still in production? Is this what's become of entertainment reviewers? Shameful!
@Zillamon51
@Zillamon51 10 лет назад
She's a FILM CRITIC, not a stage critic. Is she also not "legitimate" if she doesn't read a book that a movie is based on? A movie needs to stand on its own, whether it's based on a play or a book or whatever.
