Jersey Boys starring John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, and Michael Lomenda is reviewed by Ben Mankiewicz (host of Turner Classic Movies), Matt Atchity (Editor-in-chief Rottentomatoes.com), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap.com and Linoleum Knife podcast) and Christy Lemire (ChristieLemire.com).

Clint Eastwood's big screen version of the Tony Award-winning musical tells the story of the four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic `60s rock group The Four Seasons. Their trials and triumphs are accompanied by the hit songs that influenced a generation, and are now being embraced by a new generation of fans through the stage musical.(c) Warner Bros.

I love how Christy says, "Bye." at the end. Her tone of voice is so adorable.

These reviews are so much better when all four of them have seen the movie and can bring different views to the review. Even if they all agree (like this review), this is much better than if it's just 2-3 of them.

I generally like biopics for musicians. I loved Walk The Line and The Doors. However, I can't imagine watching this because Frankie Valli's high pitched squeal of a voice is so grating. Its like watching a dramatized version of nails on a chalk board.

Hmm, its too bad this movie didn't translate well to the big screen. It was such a great Broadway show.

I think they kind of missed the point that this movie was based on a hugely successful Broadway musical. I get that the film isn't that good, but they kind of skip over that part, which would explain a lot of the fantastical plot holes they don't like. Also, I grew up in the 80s, and The Four Seasons were still huge at that time. They were at least as big as The Temptations!

Hard to believe this film was so bad. The trailers look great. Their true story must be compelling . . . American Bandstand, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, major upheaval in the American landscape of music . . . I mean they captivated the charts with Sherry, Can't Take My Eyes Off You, etc. How could anyone mess up their story?

The Broadway stage show was fantastic. Can't tell you how disappointed the movie version was. It did not translate at all in the movie. The last scene where they did a reunion performance was painful to watch. The makeup to make them look older was so bad, it looked like they came from a volcano explosion. They looks ash white, hair and skin. I can't believe this was a Clint Eastwood directed movie. It's like he just gave up in the middle of the movie.

This was like a Fox News discussion of Obama. None of these people knew ANYTHING about the 4 Seasons. Anyone who knows anything about pop music history knows the 4 Seasons' place in it. They know that the Seasons sold a helluva lot more records than the Kinks, to cite just one of the bands mentioned by these "experts." What people didn't know was the backstory about the mob connections, about the death of Valli's daughter or the fact that producer Bob Crewe was gay. (One of his other daughters died in an accident, but that would have doubly bored these critics.) These revelations, along with the music, are what made Jersey Boys a surprise Broadway hit. You could never put all the things these ignorant critics asked for into a two-hour movie. Should the movie about Notorious B.I.G. have spent more time on the making of his records and skimped on the tense relations with other rappers, which led to his murder? I don't think so. If you didn't learn everything you thought you should be told about the 4 Seasons in this movie, then go to other sources to find out more. Do you think there could be a 2-hour movie telling everything about the Beatles, or even the Kinks? The Jersey Boys play and movie have certainly stirred interest in the 4 Seasons' music. Currently, on the iTunes album bestseller list, you have a 4 Seasons hits collection at No. 12, the Jersey Boys Broadway cast album at No. 48, and the Jersey Boys movie soundtrack at No. 56 (just on pre-orders because the album isn't out yet) That's before you get to the first Beatles album at No. 123 and the first Springsteen album at no. 139. But if you What the Flick panelists are bored by the 4 Seasons, fine. Go back to Godzilla and the X-Men, which have higher Rotten Tomatoes ratings. That says a lot about the state of the movie business and movie criticism. Those are the movies that bore me.

Well shoot me but I liked the movie. I didn't go in trying to analyze it, I just wanted to be entertained and I was. Yes, the music played a big part in the enjoyment of it but I also enjoyed finding out their story. Sometimes it isn't about the technical aspects but just having fun and I did. The end did make it for me, walking out I was singing and dancing.

what did they go in expecting? It showcased the high's & the low's that the group endured over time. Yea maybe the time frame thing wasn't the greatest but it still did what it set out to do. I think for those people who know & enjoy the music will like this movie for what it is & what it sets out to do!!!!

Awesome movie! My dad and I went to see Jersey Boys yesterday. Our local newspaper gave it generally negative reviews, saying that it's nothing like the musical it was based on. That may be, but so what? In most movies, particularly those based on musicals, and particularly those based on real life people, some liberties have to be taken to make it more entertaining.

I know you wrote your review 9 years ago, but if you see my post - I agree with you. I loved the music, and I love biographical stories about any triumphant group. The WTFlick review was direct and honest, this is not the most exciting movie, but it was a GOOD movie and the whole family can watch it, which makes it extraordinary! I still Loved this movie because of the talent of the Jersey Boys singers, especially John Lloyd Young.

I would make a bomb ass Monkees movie. Hollywood call me. Daydream Believers was crap. I could make them ON POINT. Anyways I thought this movie was okay. My mom loved them so she enjoyed it but she doesn't want to own it. I think it may have worked better on stage. I think I agree with Alonso on his "shockingly half ass" comment. It wasn't interesting. It seems mushed together.

Hayden Gilbert So listen to a Springsteen CD. There is nothing interesting about Springsteen's life. That was the whole point, just because you like his music, doesn't mean his life can be made into interesting drama. It's literally the whole point they were making. HOW DO YOU NOT SEE THIS?
@haydengilbert6317
@haydengilbert6317 10 лет назад
Wow I'm so glad we have Bruce Springsteen's closest confidante here to tell us there is "nothing interesting about [his] life"! Woo! You should have a job in Hollywood purely just shutting down potential film projects! They need your expertise in shooting down ideas before they are even made. Pack it up, folks! Hey, what else can't be made into an interesting drama, oh Idea Swami? And all sarcasm, passive-agressive Assness aside, an "Across the Universe"-style musical told through Springsteen songs was what I had in mind. That is my most anticipated musical film project, unless someone were to produce a film adaptation of Tom Waits' The Black Rider.
@sagerbj86
@sagerbj86 10 лет назад
Hayden Gilbert Lol that could actually be pretty interesting. Making musicals around pre-existing songs is extremely hard and rarely work, as garbage like Rock of Ages showed us, but they sure are great when they do work.

It already exists. It's called Backbeat, and it's mostly about Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe. Besides, the entire Beatles Anthology is on DVD. No feature film is going to shed more light on the band's history than that did.

It's tough to review this when you've never seen the stage show. A lot of assumptions of how the show is onstage were made in this review...for example, no they don't break into song in the musical either, so that's not a valid criticism of the movie. It's hard to get a good review of movie musicals when none of the reviewers enjoy musicals.
@benjamincallahan1053

The way the story is told is exactly how it's told in the stage show. They should go see the show before critiquing a movie and a band they have no idea about. This movie is subjective as all get out. Blissful ignorance?

Clint Eastwood has no gift for musicals and should keep a safe distance from them in the future. BTW, the real Frankie Valli is a bonafide degenerate with a double digit IQ. His only talent was singing in falsetto voice. He was not a major talent, nor was he a nice guy. The success of the broadway show Jersey Boys was the result of the enormous popularity of The Sopranos. Gangster Jersey types had a musical preference for hometown singers. The Sopranos are no longer relevant in 2014. The music of that era jumped the shark 10 years ago. Nobody told Clint Eastwood.

@5:53"Why these guys? Where's The Kinks movie? Where's The Monkees movie? Rolling Stones?" That has got to be one of the dumbest comments you guys have made and all agreed upon? This is obviously someone's art and they wanted to make something about a group they thought were great. For you guys to make those statements, it was like listening to a bunch of amateurs movie critics, which you guys probably are. If one wanted to make a Kinks movie, then one could, just like one can make a movie about ANYTHING. I'll remind others to check out other channels for movie reviews. Apparently, this one suffers from lack of common sense.

I think music biopics are tough to make just right. The Doors movie didn't come across well, and neither did that one about Bobby Darin with Kevin Spacey. Backbeat about The Beatles' Hamburg days was so-so.
@TheLivewire18
@TheLivewire18 10 лет назад
I actually kind of see what they're saying. They're saying, by the time they finished the movie and walked out, they felt like why? Nothing compelling happened and it's not like they're that important of a band in history. Usually it's one or the other. If it's a band that isn't that big, usually there would be some crazy story that they had to go through to make it. That would make the movie interesting. Instead since nothing happened it leaves you with a feeling of, why? I haven't seen it before but I definitely see where they're coming from
@djmane1
@djmane1 10 лет назад
"Nothing compelling happened and it's not like they're that important of a band in history. " That's subjective, of course. Someone must have thought they were huge because they made a Broadway show about them. Even if they weren't as big as The Beatles, they were still big at one time. Actually, in my opinion, they were bigger than The Doors or Kinks. Look up Valli and The Four Season's catalog. Those songs were huge. Sure, that was decades ago, but they made their mark in history even if the music appeal to people today.

Matt Goddard Not really. I agree with some of their review. You'd feel the same if a band you appreciated were treated poorly through this condescending question that really has no relevance to the movie.
