Dear Rabbi, I am not a Christian but a member of the Bahá’í faith. It’s good to bring up subjects and analyze them and sort of deepen ourselves in biblical and spiritual matters. That being said, we sometimes forget that spiritual language (revelatory language) used in all world religions including Judaism and Christianity and throughout human history is as differentially unique as the languages of the mathematical logic and poetry. The issue of divisions among the leaders of most of the world religions is just exact this language of revelation. They read the words of revelation (the word of God) as if it’s a Sunday newspaper. And we know that even everyday language is subject to constant change and interpretation. Current judicial language of the laws requires interpretation and people still fight over their meanings, how much more the ancient revelatory language. So we need to be more humble when it comes to the interpretation of the sacred texts especially when they are expressed in allegorical and or symbolic or metaphorical language. In this video you were expressing that Jesus had stated this or that and the promises never came true. But these objections can also be thrown at Judaism and in fact atheists do this all the time with Jewish sacred texts and regrettably they laugh about it too. For example, they say, the Abrahamic God who is supposed to be All-knowing and All-wise creates Adam and Eve and by the time of Noah’s generation, Tanakh states that humans were evil: “And the Lord saw that the evil of man was great in the earth, and every imagination of his heart was only evil all the time.” (Tanakh, Genesis 6:5). So atheists thinking they are rational and logical they mock and state, didn’t God know what he was creating before he created humans!? They further mock the God of Judaism and say, how could an All-knowing and an All-wise God fail in his own decisions and regret his own creative will. They quote the following from Tanakh: “And the Lord regretted that He had made man upon the earth, and He became grieved in His heart.” (Tanakh, Genesis 6:6) In just the next verse, atheists say that God not only admits his own failure but decides to wipe out all creatures including innocent creatures such as cattle, creeping things, and the fowl of the heavens and so on: “And the Lord said, "I will blot out man, whom I created, from upon the face of the earth, from man to cattle to creeping thing, to the fowl of the heavens, for I regret that I made them." (Tanakh, Genesis 6:7) So they say this God not only failed but wrongfully killed almost all innocent creatures along with mankind. They say such God cannot possibly be All-knowing, All-wise, and All-mighty. This failure they say does not end there, because they say in Tanakh God destroys almost all creatures, thinking that after this flood evil would be wiped out, but this not only didn’t come to pass but evil got worse which they say is another proof that this God is absolutely incompetent, demented, and confused. Their laughters, sadly increase with each page of the Tanakh. So similarly, why do you object to Jesus Christ, thinking his promises didn’t come true or that you find reasons to reject him. Have you ever reflected that what you consider as failure in Jesus, might actually be a failure on your own part, not grasping deeper truths and wisdoms in God’s unique revelatory language? That maybe you are rejecting him because in every age humans have assumed to know God’s mind through his language? If you want to rely solely on the faculty of reason to prove Jesus’ failures as a messiah, then, by the same standard of the faculty of reason, people can claim to have irrefutably proved far worse failures of your own God of Tanakh. I as a Baha’i wholeheartedly accept the divine origin or Tanakh, but also accept the divine origin of the teachings of Christ. Scriptural reasoning is good to have but it has its limits beyond which it would act as an obstacle, and unless we open our hearts and minds to the far deeper language of the spirit, we would never grasp the spiritual truths wrapped in spiritual words that only spiritual eyes and ears can see and hear. “Son of man, you are dwelling in the midst of a rebellious house, who have eyes to see but do not see, who have ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious house.” (Tanakh, Ezekiel 12:2) Hearken to this, foolish people without understanding; they have eyes yet they see not, they have ears yet they hear not. (Tanakh, Jeremiah 5:21)
