Drawing on obscure fragments of ancient documents, the late author of The Secret Gospel challenges the orthodox version of the life of Jesus Christ with a portrait of Jesus as a feared practitioner of black magic.

I find a Jesus Seminar style interpretation appealing, Jesus didnt do healing miracles, he lead a group of care providers (therapeutae) who accepted and cared for various sick and disabled people who were considered unclean and/or cursed by God. And people were fascinated by this compassion, maybe we can say they considered it a miracle that some group was so caring. And as the story of that spread, it turned into Jesus miraculously healing people. Which kinda loses the ethical example Jesus was setting - take care of the poor, sick, homeless, outcasts. And what was maybe the original human ethical narrative got turned into a supernatural superstitious one.

Yeah interpreting Jesus' resurrection as an expansion of a possible original scenario where people simply had a political slogan "Jesus lives!" as in his ideas live on even tho you killed him - is also an interesting take of some Jesus Seminar theologians.

@@paulnolan4971 - Wow! You're old enough to remember Doug Henning!? I mention his name and just get blank stares from people. Are you perhaps a magician yourself? BTW, I doubt the "trick" at the wedding in Cana ever happened, because Yeshu (Jesus) is said to have used "six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece." A firkin is about 11 gallons, so we're talking about somewhere between 132 gallons (22 x 6 = 132) and 198 gallons (33 x 6 = 198). That would've been more than enough to fill a mikveh (ritual immersion bath), per the established halakah (religio-legal ruling) of the Jewish Sages, which requires a minimum of 40 seah for a mikveh to be acceptable (i.e., approximately 120 gallons), though nowadays one should endeavor to keep the mikveh filled with approximately 243.5 gallons. See Rebbe Schneerson's letter on the chabad.org website entitled, "Guidelines for the construction of a mikveh."

It's always worth remembering that in the OT story of the exodus, when Moses went before Pharaoh, his court magicians were easily able to duplicate Moses' "miracles" immediately upon demand. Of course, Moses' divine magic does finally win out (the Egyptians conjured serpents were consumed), though this would seem to be an obvious, foregone conclusion - as it's the thrust of the entire narrative. Also, this does not by any means preclude further stagecraft.

It is kinda interesting that christianity abandoned the more diverse iconographic imagery of the Jesus character. What are we left with? Mostly scenarios relating to his supposed deeds. Birth imagery, last supper imagery, death imagery. I suppose they retained the cross. Goblet is still hanging around too (anachronistic though it may be). But wand/rod and other visual short hands were dropped or suppressed. I imagine someone could put together a pretty interesting book tracing to arrival and loss of such symbols as well as an explainer on the forces involved in their abandonment.

The Gemara relates: There was a certain man who came before Rabbi Ḥanina and said to him: I know that this man is a firstborn. Rabbi Ḥanina said to him: From where do you know? He said to Rabbi Ḥanina: Because when people would come before his father to obtain a cure for their ailing eyes, he would say to them: Go to my son Shikhḥat, as he is a firstborn and his saliva heals this ailment. The Gemara asks: But perhaps he is his mother’s firstborn? The Gemara answers: It is learned as a tradition that the saliva of a father’s firstborn heals this ailment but the saliva of a mother’s firstborn does not heal this ailment - Talmud Bavli, Bava Batra 126b. Mark is a midrash of Q. The redactors of Matthew and Luke had a problem with this story, because while the historical man could heal because he was Yosef's firstborn biological offspring Jewish tradition held that he couldn't heal with his spittle if he were the firstborn offspring of Mirayim. So, there you go. It was problematic, so it was removed.

i feel pretty confident that i could add a LOT to this particular conversation regarding magic in the context of the bible...so i hope u guys are ready to do a bit of reading...ok here we go...Derek's approach to using scholars for most of biblical understanding is spot on, but IT SHOULD NOT BE THE PRIMARY FORM OF EDUCATION REGARDING THIS PARTICULAR FIELD...ppl will then ask "why is that?", and my response to this question is bc some fields of history fall under the umbrella term of "overt social engineering" while others such as BIBLICAL MAGIC will fall under the umbrella term of "COVERT social engineering"...maybe it would be best to think of this field as if u were trying to do scholarship of an ancient form of CIA COVERT OPERATIONS...and while scholars are wonderful at providing accurate information which is accessible thru typical research methodology, they would be ill equipped to attempt to do similar scholarly work in a field best suited for forensic detective type of work...simply bc the information in this particular field of research DOES NOT WANT TO BE FOUND...and it will use every trick in its book to throw u off course... i also think Derek hit the nail on the head when he aaked "do we even know what magic is?"...and the answer is nope they certainly don't, just as i don't...and i have been looking into this for longer than both of those guys combined...like i stated, imagine trying to understand the full functions of the CIA, KGB, MOSSAD, JESUITS, etc...its simply not gonna happen...but i can tell u one thing that i have learned about magic, it certainly ran the world back then and it certainly runs the world today...that is a certainty... unless of course u don't believe that our money system, our educational system, our media, our religious systems, our laws, intelligence agencies, and our governments run this world...bc every single one of those systems were created thru magic...100% the best definition for magic that i could come up with would be something like this: it is a vast information network which provides those who work in the various fields of social engineering to best accomplish their goals for society while simultaneously expending the least amount of energy in the process...i would also add that it also provides the social engineering class with an ever expanding gap between themselves and the masses in terms of an information learning curve... i hope that helped...if anyone has any specific questions feel free to ask... ur friend, abracadabra

@@anthonyjohn9000 "its not magic, its the power of mind..." precisely...and the power of the mind, when utilized for the purposes of magic, RESULTS in the systems of governance that i just described above... for example, the spell that billions are under, called "religion", at this very moment is based upon misdirection and words which were LITERALLY CREATED OUT OF THIN AIR TO BE USED FOR THAT VERY PURPOSE; to place their target population in a state of cognitive dissonance which is called MENTAL MAGIC...and mental magic was designed to fool the MIND, just as physical magic was designed to fool the EYES... but notice how IT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER IF ANY OF THOSE BIBLICAL CHARACTERS EXISTED OR NOT IN REALITY, bc they were just the PROPS for that particular magic trick...bc we all know that the ONLY thing that matters in any mental magic trick is the RESULT of that magic trick...thus, while u are being misdirected into arguing whether those literary or SCRIPTED ppl ever existed the RESULTS show with crystal clarity that billions of ppl have literally based their entire lives upon that SCRIPT...talk about an effective magic trick...WHY did u think it was that the bible said so eloquently that of all ppl it was specifically the MAGI who announced the baby Jesus...and u know WHY they wrote that book, called the bible? bc they wanted to make it a binding magic spell, which is WHY they literally SPELL THE WORDS...did u think they called books with script "spelling" for no reason...they also utilize spelling of words which have multiple meanings simultaneously, again for the purpose of misdirection and confusion to fool their target society...and in the case of bible script, these multiple meanings are called parables, symbolism, literalism, mythology...which again has the EFFECT of creating confusion and chaos...and btw another term for a "binding spell" is called "the law", which simply means it was a rule created out of thin air which once written down and SPELLED OUT results in a binding effect of those words...words which they themselves created thru small mouth noises out of thin air, which they ascribed letters to, which made those former meaningless mouth noises eventually control ur entire life...and THATS a teeny tiny example of how they combine mind with magic spelling for social engineering purposes... i hope that helped... ur friend, abracadabra

The design of temples to perform god like tasks. There has always been a good theatrical element in Christianity and that could be inherited from Roman temples theatrics. There were people inventing gadgets with “magical” functions in first century empire. They say prostitution is the oldest profession, but I would argue con-man should have that title. You know how quartz crystals/rocks are found at early religious sites (Bronze Age and earlier), did you know quartz’s crystal structure allows for electric discharge when struck? We are gods and so there is no way to reject Jesus as the Son of God. The power to consider in the present tense, the history of the past and plot a revolution for the future, is to disrupt and overwhelm the Natural Law , and create alternate futures, based on intelligent powers. God and Intelligence are synonyms. The power to calculate changing the course of Natural History is the definition of a god, but we mortals cannot live forever , unless we belong to a higher estate that understands this intelligent power to change the world, and so God and Intelligence are equivocal ideas, if there is no God, then there is no "Intelligence" and we suffer from an illusion of having this god like power to escape the moment of our desperation and invent a different outcome in the future, by understanding our past, having the same moment of power as God, just short of being able to live forever. But Jesus rose from the dead, which is an answerable phenomenon for someone living in the future to have this knowledge, and if the future Intelligent Agency can commune with the Past, and leave a trail of evidence in the moment of "Now" that we observe, then Jesus having an intelligent aura of God, now lives forever. The question is "If an intelligent man has forever to solve any problem with Science and Math, he has all the time in the world to work out the solution, then what is it that you claim the intelligent person could not do , even if he had all the time in the world to figure it out ???

Jesus was a failed end times preacher who was following a common motif of dying and rising gods, virgin births and sexless conceptions that *pre-date* Christianity. "When we say…Jesus Christ…was produced without sexual union, and was crucified and died, and rose again, and ascended to heaven, ***we propound nothing new or different*** *from what you believe regarding those whom you call Sons of God. [In fact]…if anybody objects that [Jesus] was crucified, this is in* ***common*** *with the sons of Zeus (as you call them) who suffered, as previously listed [he listed Dionysus, Hercules, and Asclepius].* Since their fatal sufferings are all narrated as not similar but different, so his unique passion should not seem to be any worse." *Note how Justin (Martyr) is less of a fool than modern Christian apologists. He admits that differences don’t matter.* Since each and every one of the suffering and dying gods are slain by different means, one cannot argue the mytheme requires exactly the same means of death. “But Osiris can’t have inspired the Jesus myth because Osiris wasn’t nailed to a cross” is a stupid argument. The mytheme is simply death. Being killed. Suffering and dying. The exact mode of death can vary freely. It makes no difference to the existence and influence of the mytheme. It’s simply the particular instantiation of a generic abstraction. *And Justin’s argument (that Satan invented these fake religions to confuse people) entails Justin agreed the mytheme existed: indeed, it was demonically promulgated, multiple times. Intentionally.* *Likewise, Justin notices the mytheme is not virgin birth, but sexless conception. Of which many examples had already been popularized in pagan mythology (there just happens to also have been examples of actual virgin born gods as well). And by his argument (that the Devil was deliberately emulating the Jesus mytheme, in advance), Justin clearly accepted the same principle for “rising again” after death:* the particular exact metaphysics of the resurrection could, like the exact method of death or conception, vary freely. The mytheme consists solely of the abstraction: returning to life. Somehow. Some way. We will say bodily, at the very least. But what sort of body (the same one, a new one, a mortal one, an immortal one), didn’t matter. *If it had, Justin would have made the argument that “those gods” weren’t really resurrected. But that argument, never occurs to him. Nor did it to any other apologist of the first three centuries.* *Ancient Christians well knew there was nothing new about their dying-and-rising god. Not in respect to the mytheme.* Their claims were solely that his particular instantiation of it was better, and the only one that actually happened. *They didn’t make up the stupid modern arguments that dying-and-rising god myths didn’t exist or weren’t part of a common mytheme everyone knew about. For example, in the same century, Tertullian, in Prescription against Heretics 40, makes exactly the same argument as Justin. Funny that. They had better access to the evidence than we do. They knew what was really and widely the case. We should listen to them.* Google *"Dying-and-Rising Gods: It's Pagan, Guys. "And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit (Heb. Ruach; Grk. Pneuma) like (ὡσεὶ) a dove descending upon him" Mark 1:10. The Greek word "ὡσεὶ" (hōsei) is an adverb that's modifying the verb "descending." It's stating the manner in which the Spirit descended (i.e., in the fashion or manner of a dove). It's not stating the form (μορφῇ - morphē) that the Spirit took as it descended. So, Smith's assertion falls flat just based on the linguistics alone; though, that hasn't stopped Christians from using the dove as a symbol of HaShem's Spirit. ::::rolling my eyes::::

The video is following the academic conclusion about speaking in tongues as described in the NT. Speaking in tongues (glossolalia) IS speaking gibberish. This is the depiction given in 1 Corinthians. It is described as a gift of the spirit. It is different from the speaking in DIFFERENT tongues (heterais glossais) mentioned in Acts 2:4, which is a direct miracle from God. Paul specifically points out that glossolalia is a separate gift from miracles.

I think Dr. Henry is mistaken on his example of why the baptism was not a magical rite. What he is referring to is a Paredros rite & there are two seemingly related ones as the first spells listed in the PGM. I say he is mistaken because he just admitted that Greco-Egyptian magic developed from the 3rd century BCE to about the 5th century CE. Keep in mind that we really don't have a lot of Greco-Egyptian papyri & it's totally conceivable that the Paredros rites given in the PGM date back much further. In fact, apprenticed themselves to a magician just like any other craft. The example given could have literally been passed down from magician to magician for hundreds of years. Not to mention the fact the the 2nd rite which is fairly lengthy, details the magic that the helper spirit can do & most of them are reminiscent of what Jesus was alleged to have done. Also, Jesus was allegedly taken to Egypt as a child to escape from Herod. So again it cannot be dismissed so easily that there is no connection between Jesus' miracles & the PGM. One last thing. I would suggest picking up copies of Stephen Skinners books on Greco-Egyptian magic & Solomonic magic as he traces the techniques through over a thousand years & what we see is that the rituals & results stay very consistent. So again, a mere couple of hundred years is not that huge of a leap that the magic Jesus practiced is nigh identical to the Greco-Egyptian magic.

Derek -- this was a good first step, but Dr. Henry spoke 90% about his work and 10% about Morton Smith. Can we push a bit harder on Morton Smith? I truly feel that reading Morton Smith's opus, "Jesus the Magician" (1978) will revolutionize your already revolutionary approach to the New Testament. (If you do, would you please AVOID the topic of Smith's alleged Secret Gospel -- so controversial as sensationalism.)

The magic wand is a branch off of the holly tree. We kiss our sweethearts standing under the holly leafs. Hollywood is the magic of television entertainment/tell a vision/sell a vision. My parents used a behaviors modifying tree branch/magical switch wand on our buttocks to make us dance around crying. So that we would stop doing stupid stuff. A face smashing punch of knuckles worked too.

Great topic, thanks for sharing. If I heard correctly, Dr. Henry referred to Simon in Acts 8 from sources outside the Bible. Since other people from history talked about this guy, I guess he was a real person. This is great because it suggests that some history in the Bible could be valid. The problem I have is the Bible is so full of pseudo-science, legends and fantasy, I honestly don’t know which Biblical people were actually real and which events actually took place. Because of this, I find the Bible unreliable. _”But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:”_ (Acts 8:9)

I've practiced both sleight of hand magic & occult magic so I can soeak with some authority. So it's obvious that people can fool other people with various techniques whether physical or mental but I'm telling you that there is truth to occult magic in that it does work, it can change circumstances in your life, & it works through natural laws that are not well known (that's why it's occult). In most cases, occult magic is difficult to prove, though not impossible, to prove to someone because it almost always appears as coincidence. Again, it works through natural laws & will only appear naturally, the vast majority of times. It is much easier to prove it to yourself but you have to approach it as a true experiment. The only caveat is that you can't disbelieve in it because belief is part of what allows it to happen. So instead you take a neutral stance, follow out the procedures faithfully & log the results honestly. If people do this I think they will be surprised by the results. Also, there is a butt ton of junk out there written by people that don't know what they're doing. I would suggest that if someone is interested in experimenting to find out the actual truth, just pick up a copy of modern magick by Donald Michael Kraig & follow the instructions to the letter. Again, just be honest about the results & neither believe or disbelieve. You should have enough of an answer within a month to either confirm or deny there is something to it.

Derek -- the most important innovation of Jesus' version of Judaism was the Eucharist -- which was neither Imperial nor Jewish. Morton Smith finds a "lower class" origin of Jesus' revolutionary movement. Scholars are mistaken (I say) when they object that Morton Smith used a document from 200 years AFTER Jesus to explain the behavior of Jesus. That wasn't Smith's point. Yes, these Oxyrhynchus magical papyri are centuries after Jesus -- but Morton Smith's point was that this magical *practice* was a lower-class activity so backward and underground that it clearly *implies* an activity that stretched back to the superstitious times of ancient Persia -- at least 500 years before Jesus. Shamanic rituals of consuming the symbolic body and blood of the exorcist could even hark back to prehistoric times. That was Smith's point. In 30 CE the time was ripe to replace the animal sacrifices of the Temple with *something*. The shamanic ritual returned and proved effective. Thus Morton Smith.

Jesus was the last GREAT INITIATE back in Ancient Khem (Egypt), and thus he became a GREAT MAGUS too. ... He never taught that he was THE ONE AND ONLY SON OF GOD, but that ALL human beings are ALL Sons or Daughters of GOD/DIVINITY/SOURCE/UNIVERSE/MULTIVERSE. ... It was also rumoured (in some esoteric circles), that he may have been the (sorry, later edit = reincarnation, not), son of HERMES TRISMEGISTUS (THE THRICE GREATEST). ... "As Above, So Below ... As within, So without ... As the Universe, So the Soul" (Hermes Trismegistus).
