Jeweled Lacerta | Timon lepidus | Care Guide 

Hi. My name is Paulo and I am an amateur herpethologist since 1985, from Portugal. I really found your video very interesting about this keeping outdoors concept which is something I've been pursuing on practicing it but, unfortunetly, I don't have the necessary facilities to do that in the extent I would like to. Eyed Lizards are in great regression in the wild here because of great urbanization expansion, building of roads, buildings, loss of habitat and use of pesticides in my country. I fear we will loose it in the next few decades and that really makes me awfully sad, even more because it is a species I used to grow with and that I apreciate so much. Furthermore, captive speaking, for example, I think that one of the biggest reasons that make people like me choose to keep exotic pets instead is the fact that authorities in my country are very strict and violently punish people for keeping native species and do not encourage at all people like me to start a well endeavoured conservation own project and end up making us choose exotic species because they are already sold with legal legislation in most cases. It is very sad that people like me, having a 35 year old experience in herpetology and captive keeping, are kept from having a fullfilling job doing what we love and performing a very good contribution on saving our own european species. It's funny that the name the American keepers use for this lizard (Jeweled Lacerta) is actually derived from the Dutch name that Bert Langerwerf used when he started to sell them. en masse in the USA. I enjoyed the video. I definately think you show the best way to keep them. But I will add two things. Firstly in such an outdoor situation you should make sure there are underground hides for both extremes of temperature. Secondly, incubation should take 3 months.. If its faster, it means the eggs are being kept too warm and the babies will be smaller and weaker.

What temps ambient temperatures would you recommend for hot/ cold end and what % of humidity would you recommend?

You guys have inspired me to start working with european species.. i have some of the eyeds indoors at the moment as its winter when i got them but is there a general rule to keeping lots of species outside such as fire bellied toads and other frogs in the winter and also snakes/lizards how do you protect them from frost.. id love a chat with you guys to see if i can help in some way.. i dont want to get a species wack it in the garden and then kill it because i watched one video .. very interesting to re populate the uk with endangered native species

Does UV penetrate green house glass? I was under the impression that glass filters out UV.

Lovely video, thanks. Fantastic species. How do you stop the lizards over heating in the greenhouse when we have a heatwave? Also, doesn’t the glass prevent UV?

What's the ideal humidity

Someone please help me i know i shouldn't worry but sometimes during the day my jewelled lacerta will take random naps is this normal? Also, are their legs meant to be flimsy when they sleep because when he gets up he can pick himself up off the ground quite high which i heard is good but when he sleeps his arms go completely droopy.

Do you have a list of plants and fruit that they can eat. I want to start introducing more green food to mine now that he is a year old. I have a melanistic version. Beautiful

Hey man ...I've had my JL for 3 years he's massive and a lot bigger than most I've seen so think the breeder was wrong with his age . I was told not to mist because it could cause respiratory problems..not saying it wrong but can you give me more info why to do it .I'm stil new and learning. Great channel man .
